Elena Ishchenko - (Russian) Colonial Violence: Counter/Monuments
Lecture + Walk

The legacy of colonialism permeated cities, shaping our memory of victims and perpetrators. In her talk, curator and researcher Elena Ishchenko invites everyone to participate in a discussion about memorial culture policies, with a focus on the Russian example, where the government and pro-government organizations strictly regulate public commemoration.
Elena Ishchenko is a curator, researcher, and activist whose practice focuses on the history and outcomes of Russian colonial and imperial politics. Through a variety of projects, including exhibitions, educational initiatives, workshops, and digital platforms, she develops a decolonial perspective.

Looking forward to next week Tuesday, 27.06.23, 19h
Suzanne Lacy & Alistair Hudson will be in Bremen for a conversation on:
What Kind of City?

In the early 1990s Los Angeles artist Suzanne Lacy spearheaded New Genre Public Art, an early term for socially engaged art practices within the public realm. Her work countered the traditional understanding of art in public space. A different idea of public emerged, one that suggested active engagement with specific people in specific places.
In 2021 Lacy worked with then director Alistair Hudson to realize What Kind of City?, a large-scale exhibition and subsequent city-wide project at The Whitworth, Manchester, UK. The exhibition presented multiple key works by Suzanne Lacy whilst at the same time serving as A Manual For Social Change on how art could change the city.
Alistair Hudson, now chairman at ZKM, Karlsruhe, is an influential director, curator and writer on social practice art. In their conversation at GAK, Lacy and Hudson will discuss the potential of public art taking their joint project as a starting point.

Fr, 12.5., 19h: Open(ing)
Sun, 14.5., 15h: Walking as a river. Expedition

2.-21.5.23: Residency

Harm Coordes devotes himself to everyday practices, objects and processes. Where do we find processes or objects that defy our appreciation because of their everydayness? What implicit wisdom is hidden in these practices? What are the performative or artistic potentials of the tools and devices that contribute to the performance of these activities. Harm Coordes’ research-based practice explores how these actions can be abstracted and exhibited in interactive environments to create experiences of "en-living.
In the framework of the residency joint expeditions into the everyday and the ordinary take place.

In the expedition, "Walking as a river" Harm Coordes and Stefan Andersson invite the participants to dive into the flowing continuum of water and its interconnectedness with the world.
Please bring a glass of water.

Luce deLire und Christian Liclair:
Trans Perspektiven. Ein performativer Talk zu Hospitalität im Kunstfeld / Trans Perspectives. A performative talk on hospitality in the field of art

***
At some point in the last decade, trans ceased to be a political sideshow. How do the related social and political developments play out in the art world? Many galleries, art associations and museums nowadays present non-cis artists. But is this all just lip service, unwilling to dismantle structural discrimination?

Luce deLire and Christian Liclair invite us to a performative discussion in the context of the current issue of TEXTE ZUR KUNST. As co-editors, deLire and Liclair conceived the issue, which, under the title „Trans Perspectives“, addresses persistent prejudices, transmisogyny, and anti-Semitism in the art world and its institutions, and realized it with the TZK editorial team.

„Verkettung“ [concatenation] is the title of Karina Burjakov’s exhibition in the GAK poster frames. It is the fourth in our exhibition series “Re-Framing.” While the first three exhibitions were still in the realm of printed matter, this one leaves the flatness of paper. In fact, it doesn’t happen on paper at all. Instead, Karina Burjakov works with link chains and ball chains, aluminum mesh and mirror film, putty, spray paint, and chain-link fence. In and on the poster frames, distinct parts slide into one another, line up, hang through and over each another. Here, concatenation refers to the connections between the materials as well as the series of decisions made.
Chains and wire represent barriers and demarcations in public space. Karina Burjakov detaches them from their contexts and brings them into new relationships as abstract forms. What interests me about Karina Burjakov’s material collages is how images emerge from …

Crystal Room #6
Elburuz Fidan: Rererere… – Murmuring on discarded fragments
Fri, 28.4., 20h: Opening

Sara Ahmed’s concept of “Q***r Use” and Catherine Malabou’s theories on Cerebral Plasticity inform Elburuz Fidan’s PhD research on Archive and Memory. The idea of Q***r Use suggests that some archival materials may have alternative uses beyond their original intent, and may be part of a Q***r Archive. On the other hand, Cerebral Plasticity highlights the impact of traumas on the cerebral system. In her terms “the new wounded” are the beings who suffer on certain loss of memory where the plasticity of the cerebral system does not function as it used to. In these terms, the Archive can be wounded, through manipulations and plastic changes within the archival materials.
Elburuz Fidan’s residency focuses on exploring discarded fragments that still linger in the brain and form plastic changes, culminating in the video installation Rererere, which repurposes fragments of the research into visual and auditory components.

Crystal Room #4
Irena Kukrić: Rehearsing the non-human. On the possibilities of (dis)embodied gestures
Fri, 17.03.23, 17h: Opening & Performance

What do we perceive as present in a performance without human actors? How do we deal with (un)embodied affects, since today we so often relate to people who are not physically present, or to media that governed by codes? Through rehearsals and feedback loops, Kukrić explores automated movements and gestures in an ongoing experimental situation.

OUT NOW •

developed this joint platform over the past year.

With the project, we are creating a shared digital discourse space for our programs - in accordance with our common location as houses for contemporary art in the metropolitan region of Bremen.

Both commissioned and documentary video, audio, text and image contributions are gathered on publicsandpublishings.org. Sometimes they are traces and documentation of events or exhibitions, sometimes they are independent scientific or artistic contributions. They are all related to the respective programs of the three institutions and make similarities as well as differences visible as a critical-constructive dialogue.

Thank you .studio

Christian Rosales: "Contrapuntual Impro"
Fri, 24.02.23, 19 h: Duo INCOMODO (Christian Rosales & Mattia Bonafini)
Concert

Making use of fragments of the recordings made in Colombia by ethnologist Konrad Theodor Preuss at the beginning of the 20th century, the duo INCOMODO will use free improvisation, an electric guitar, and modular racks to challenge the colonial power structures present in these historical recordings. Through musical experimentation and reinterpretation, this thought-provoking performance aims to subvert the homogenizing effects of colonialism and promote a better understanding of the context behind these recordings.

From Reparative Body Workshops to Public Performances. On Racial Trauma, Somatic Art Practice and Decolonial Healing (Anna Halprin 1969/Tabita Rezaire 2020)

The lecture traces repairative workshop, body and performance practices in the field of art and diaspora. It focuses on how therapeutic body workshop techniques on the un-learning and transformation of racial violence and trauma in the late 1960ies and today had been transformed into public art performances.

Crystal Room #1
Icaro Lopez de Mesa: „Swinging golden grams“ 1.-5.2.2023 at GAK Projekt Space, Performance: 5.2., 17h

From jewelry to electronics, from the sun to the divine, from rivers to blood. The elusive gold contained in electronic instruments to conduct energy, is extracted first from the earth. Icaro Lopez de Mesa‘s performance installation swings on the idea of what happens when a grain of gold is extracted, to be installed in microchips and circuits of electronic devices.

virgil b/g taylor: Fag Tips for Gesellschaft für Aktuelle Kunst

21.01.-05.03.2023

virgil b/g taylor deals with the incidental ways in which urban territories and affiliations are marked, how past and present are related, and what the practice of inscribing particular names on places in the first place entails. Fiction can enable new imaginaries and reorderings, but it can also repeat and literally cement toxic relationships.

„Prophetic Complaints“ - Dudu Quintanilha´s erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung in Deutschland / first institutional solo exhibition in Germany!

21.01.-26.03.2023

For the exhibition a new video work is being created in cooperation with artists and performers from the Blaumeier-Atelier Bremen. The group used techniques of listening, observing, and performing in order to explore the prophetic and imaginative potential of complaints.
