The European Parliament has formally submitted a request to the European Commission and the Council of the European Union to begin negotiations on a visa facilitation agreement with Mongolia. 🇪🇺

The development was revealed during a visit to Mongolia by a 6 member delegation from the European Parliament from May 26 to 30. The visit was led by Giuseppina Princi, Chair of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Central Asia and Mongolia.

During the 18th EU–Mongolia Inter-Parliamentary Meeting in Ulaanbaatar, Deputy Speaker of Parliament J.Bat-Erdene reiterated Mongolia’s interest in pursuing visa facilitation with the European Union. In response, Giuseppina Princi said the European Parliament had already submitted a formal request to EU institutions to launch negotiations on a visa facilitation agreement with Mongolia, modeled on the framework currently used with Kazakhstan.

The visa issue emerged as one of the most notable outcomes of the visit, reflecting broader efforts by both sides to deepen political and economic ties.

Beyond visa facilitation, Mongolian and European lawmakers discussed cybersecurity cooperation, data protection, combating online disinformation, and a potential Geographical Indications Agreement, which would provide legal protection for products linked to specific regions. The discussions also covered Mongolia’s participation in the European Union’s GSP+ trade preference scheme.

The delegation also met with the Minister of Energy to discuss energy sector reforms, renewable energy opportunities, and future cooperation. As part of their visit, the group toured the Mongolian Wool and Cashmere Association, Evseg Cashmere Factory, and industrial facilities in Baganuur District.

The next EU–Mongolia Inter-Parliamentary Meeting is scheduled to take place in Brussels in 2027.

While a visa facilitation agreement would still require approval and negotiations at the EU level, the European Parliament’s formal request marks a significant step forward in Mongolia’s long-standing efforts to secure easier travel access to Europe.
