Dorothée Nilsson Gallery

Dorothée Nilsson Gallery Dorothée Nilsson Gallery was founded in 2017 in Berlin, Germany. Located on the Potsdamer Straße in the district of Tiergarten, the gallery represents an international portfolio of artists and artists‘ estates. While the represented artists of the gallery practice in a vast range of mediums, their work is often based on photography. Experimental approaches regarding medium or engagement with societal issues play a core role in their work and are explored through a critical, aesthetic, or poetic lens.

Dorothée Nilsson Gallery presents a dynamic exhibition program while valuing long-term collaborations with the artists. Each year five to six exhibitions take place in our exhibition space on Potsdamer Straße 65, in addition to artist talks and panel discussions. The gallery regularly takes part in international art fairs.

Why do we photograph ourselves?
Julia Peirone spoke with Bianca Hauda from ARTE about her current exhibition ‘Make Up and Smile’. The program, Twist, Foto, Selfie - Ich! will be broadcasted on Sunday, 26.03.23 but can already be viewed in its entirety online.

For the series ‘Some like it hot’ (2022), Peirone was inspired by selfies posted on Instagram. She noticed similar poses and the same homogenous make-up looks were being posted on the app. Peirone asked girls to recreate the iconic look of Marilyn Monroe with the camera situated where a mirror normally would be placed.

JULIA PEIRONE
Make Up and Smile
Opening: Friday, March 3rd, 6 - 9 pm

Julia Peirone explores issues of identity and the construction of gender in her photographic and video work. Her visual world is populated by teenage girls and young women still forming their identities. The modern-day visual culture favors self-glorification and an obsession with abstract and hard-to-obtain ideals of beauty. Peirone explores and captures her protagonists‘ search for themselves and their sexuality while confronted by feelings of shame and vulnerability. Frustration plays a part too, as their annoyance at the societal standards and beauty ideals that are being imprinted on them and exaggerated in the photoshoots.

DAWID - Urval
05.11.22 - 07.01.23

The photographic works of Swedish artist Dawid are among the most radical, poetic, and original attempts to redefine photography’s relationship to its image referent. Coming from a social documentary context of the 1970s, student of Christer Strömholm, Dawid’s photography inscribes itself in the ambitious movement of the 1980s to create from photography an emancipated, autonomous image, on an equal footing with painting, drawing, and sculpture.

"The urge to document what is no longer visible. To remake, capture, and conserve what was there for millennia and has been largely obscured over the last 150 years urges Österholm on. In his work, the artist recreates the night sky as it appeared in the 1800s before public gas lanterns lit up metropolises and subsequently darkened the firmament. "

The idea of control, the need to be controlled, an unholy tension. Discipline, restraint, and release. What needs to be controlled - the body, the other, an animal like the snake, or sex/uality is left open.

We would be happy to welcome you to the finissage of the exhibition object amnesic: a compost manifesto on Saturday, July 2nd!

On the last day of the exhibition, a reading from the artist book: object amnesic: a compost manifesto by Henrik Strömberg and Jens Soneryd will take place in the gallery. Jens Soneryd will read a selection of his poetry from the book.

The publication won the BUP Award in 2020 and was subsequently published by Blow Up Press in 2021. This week it was nominated for the Photo-Text Book Award at Les Rencontres de la photographie, Arles

The idea of the compost in its natural and metaphorical form continues through the photographic works and in the video installation piece seconds away present in Henrik Strömberg’s exhibition. The recent artist book serves as a point of reference throughout the exhibition.

Henrik Strömberg (*1970, Sweden, lives and works in Berlin) works with the idea of metamorphosis, decay, and the transformation of materials; sculptural objects, and their photographic documentation, as well as the deconstruction and transformation of the photographic image itself. He received a B.A in Fine Art from Camberwell College of Art, UK, and went on to pursue an M.A in Photography from FAMU, Academy of Performing Arts Prague, CZ.

Jens Soneryd writes, edits, curates, and collects plants. Educated in Literature and Philosophy (Stockholm, Sweden), he explores the concept of the culture-nature relationship. He is based in Bernshammar and Berlin.
