GlogauAIR

GlogauAIR GlogauAIR is a non-profit art residency and space founded by Chema Alvargonzalez to allow artists from outside Berlin to exchange ideas with each other and with the local artistic community.
(17)

GlogauAIR is a non-profit organization where artists from diverse social and geographical backgrounds find a place to develop their works in a dynamic environment of coexistence, exchange of ideas and internationalization. At the same time they get to know a new culture and landscape in Berlin, getting influences from the city, which has became a pioneer place for contemporary culture. GlogauAIR was founded by the Spanish artist Chema Alvargonzález in 2006 with the intention to create a meeting point between artists from all disciplines to work in collaboration, expanding their practice in terms of materials, formats and style. The processes are shown every three months in an open studios exhibition where the public can see the works of the resident artists in a relaxed and festive event. Parallel to the Residency Programme and the open studios we organise activities and exchange projects in collaboration with other institutions such as Videoart, Sound Art or Performance Festivals, exhibitions or artist presentations, where we invite local public, art lovers and professionals. Artists from all artistic disciplines (installation, video art, net.art, sculpture, creative writing, architecture, electronic music, painting, drawing, performance, photography, etc.) are invited to come as far as their project fits with our installations. Fourth times a year the artists can apply with a project for a residency for three or six months. The applications are evaluated by a jury formed by professionals from the Berlin art community. Moreover, some artists are selected and granted by different institutions in their home countries, with which we have collaboration agreements.

New Artists Alert! Matilde Søes Rasmussen & Marie Flarup Kristensen are an artist duo that works with photography, video, writing, installation and performance.

They explore questions concerning youth, love, identity, female desire and sad flowers, producing a body of work that can be seen as the offspring of an often non-verbal artistic collaboration. Care, trust and interest in mysterious female existences are all important elements.

“Our collaboration allows us to go places we never could have walked alone. Through a playful and intuitive way of experimenting, we explore both ourselves and each other.”

New artist alert! On-line Resident Michalina W. Klasik is a polish artist, working with various visual medium such as photography and installations.

Her production is deeply connected to ecology and described by herself as «secret activism ».
Klasik is interested in the relationship between man and nature, and in particular on the influence of one on the other. She is currently collecting various written and visual documents about "tree huggers" with the final desire to create a group of people reconciled with nature and who fight for it.

“The first tree huggers were 294 men and 69 women belonging to the Bishnois branch of Hinduism, who, in 1730, died while trying to protect the trees in their village from being turned into the raw material for building a palace. They literally clung to the trees, while being slaughtered by the foresters.”

Click and Connect (2021)
Acrylic paint, pencil and soft pastel on paper

The work of french painter Honey Forestier proposed for the Showcase can be described as a muted imagery. Inspired by Kreuzberg ’s landscape, the painting mixes different elements of the canal’s imagery.

The aim of this composition was to bring serenity and to step back from the overstimulating outside and online world.

New Artist Alert! The work of French artist Honey Forestier is a mix of reality and reverie.

Using the medium of painting, she delivers an intimate and sensible production between humor, poetry and honesty. A very fine balance that takes form as some playful genrelike scenes.

She wishes to treat her subjects with intimacy, whether they are friends or objects, but without making them feel so private the viewer is unable to grasp their meaning.

New artist alert! The work of Spanish artist Beatriz Lorenzo focuses on observing the world around her.

By taking an interest in psychology and imagination as a creative lever, she develops an exploration of complex emotions, such as doubts, determination, fears or freedom.

With the medium of painting, Lorenzo creates vibrant compositions mixing graphic patterns and symbolic elements like masks.

“The mask is present not as something that hides, but as something used to represent the freedom of the self. Graphic patterns represents the small routines that we do daily. By depicting these repetitive elements through painting, an exact repetition is never possible so it comes to represent a fascination for the small differences within the routine. These two elements ultimately speak about identity.”

The Invisible Wall (2021)

Paco Payato is interested in the global division created by the Berlin Wall, whether in the city itself or in the whole world in general. After its demolition, the effects of the wall continue to be felt, in particular the social and economic inequalities.

By focusing on the details of human and Urban´s landscapes in Berlin through the medium of photography, Poyato sheds light on the rupture between the Western and Eastern parts of the city.

New Artist Alert! Paco Poyato is a Spanish photographer, whose work is mostly influenced by the consumer society and by how it affects and transforms his closest reality.

Poyato’s interest lays deep in the term “globalisation”, understood as the loss of identity of the individual in favour of a model linked to power and trivialisation.

With his work, he tries to delve into the mechanisms that characterise certain human groups: those common experiences that serve to build, mark and define the identity of their members.

During his Residency at GlogauAIR, he will develop a project that aims to analyse that Invisible Wall still dividing Germany.

“An invisible wall, which still remains under the protection of economic prosperity from the capitalist West, was reinforced thanks to the global financial crisis of recent years, widening the gap between the richest and the poor, ending to the so-called middle class."

Point of View (2021)
Video 15:38min

“Is it possible to see the world from another point of view different from our own?”
The neighbourhood called Berlin of Bogota in Colombia and the actual capital of Germany Berlin is the starting point of this research.
Helena Ospina Lizarralde questions the ideas of time, presence and subjectivity of the being by immersing herself in virtual tours on Google maps.

Why are we here? (2021)
Interactive installation

The artist suggests the spectator to propose an answer to the question: “Why are we here?”
By having a direct interaction with the public, Helena continues to explore this key subject that depicts her work as an artist.

New Artist Alert! Helena Ospina Lizarralde is a visual artist from Colombia.

Her work starts as an exercise, something to understand concerns about her own being and existence. However, it is not an autobiographical work: her own experiences serve to highlight more universal questions about existence, time, reality, appearances and intimacy. How these relate, especially in these times.

In doing so, Ospina explores different media, such as ceramics, weaving, video, performance and installation.

“Blank Page”, 2021
Books, drawings, ultraviolet light

Developed at the very beginning of the Residency, this project is a collection of ideas, references, plans. A mental diagram that is looking for its final form, through the pages of a notebook.

Nocturnal thoughts, lines, sketches and concepts interweave together to leave space for an image that is not there yet, but could be. The Blank Page is a Possibility, the beginning of a journey in which those that are now ideas in the night, will finally come to life and acquire daytime reality.

“[…] the showcase allows us to enjoy that perfect state of possibility and night, wonderful for its attractiveness and dangerous for the charm that traps you forever in the melancholy of its indefiniteness.”

New Artists Alert! Elena Urucatu and Carlos Maté are visual artists based in Madrid. Carlos has a background in architecture and design, Elena in industrial design. In 2012 they joined forces under the name of Carlos Maté studio and made the transition to the visual arts.

Their work varies from installation to performance, from sculpture to drawing, video and sound art, but also poetry and literature.
Each medium comes to the same end: finding the meaning of art through the abyss of a dark beauty hidden within human monstrosity. It’s a melancholic contradiction: on one side there is despair towards the human being, but on the other there is a terrible faith in men.

They say of their own practice: “Our work is someone’s story who sees no point in making art because he has lost any hope in the human being. He thinks we are a terrible species dragging the whole planet into death and extinction. But as he is bored he decides to entertain himself by celebrating a funeral for the world … his own world as well […]”

New artist alert! Julia Hannafin (@Juliahannafin) is an american fiction-writer whose aim is to give a legible shape to time, grief, desire and dislocation.
Having experienced loss, Julia tries to trace the ephemera to its source. Using existing memories and creating new ones, she started to tell stories about the things that she found and what those meant to her.

Her characters often come from complicated families of women, coming herself from one, where questions around biological families and gender are a central point. What interests her the most, is what her characters do and do not know about themselves, and how their own self-knowledge may come as a surprise.

In her current novel-in-progress, Julia Hannafin puts the subjunctive tense in conflict with the indicative, as a way to explore fantasy, obsession and desire.

“What might it feel like to write from the inside, to write of a sensation before it becomes a knowing?”

New artist alert! Yves Hänggi is a painter and illustrator from Switzerland. Inspired by the mass culture, Yves seeks for the most hidden facets of the human being, in order to bring out and exaggerate its multiple identities.

To this end, his work plays with accumulation and multiplication, interlacing and overlapping, creating a labyrinth with infinite meanders: a mirror of our contemporary society. He developed his own symbols and allegorical figures, which continuously interweave in a frenetic and overpopulated saraband.

Yves’ approach and artistic style is frequently imbued with music, dancing crowds and rhythm, for this reason Berlin is for him a ceaseless source of creative inspiration.

His solo exhibition is also coming this March in Berlin. Let's check the following information and don't forget to save the date!
