Under the Blanket of Freedom
- an interdisciplinary theatre performance

Author & Director Gyongyi Salla and Choreographer Nadine Freisleben (GAU Company) realize together a story about relationships inspired by sociological, historical, political, anti-sexist and anti-racist interrogations. Whilst the play’s emphasis is on the story of three individuals as a metaphor, it also draws parallel lines to some of today's society's problems, aiming to embody a deeper, general conflict through media, music and dance.

The music in UBF will express the bridge to the contemporary period. Bass music, electronically amplified instruments, jazz and popular music elements, fewer lyrical melodies and percussiveness features will complement the “light painting” throughout the show to close the gap between audio and images.

Meet the UBF Cast!

Paola Vertemati - Visuals.

Under the Blanket of Freedom is played in the 21st Century; therefore all its elements that are combined on stage will reflect the influences of art and literature within this “modern” era. Using visuals/ projection as an addition to the traditional stage design, we will mimic close to real environments and effects. With this avant-garde form of expression and through technology we would like to provide the audience with a two-or three-dimensional experience combined with music to create an audio-visual narrative.

Our story is told by affirming several languages side by side. Visual elements, movement, text and music are not subordinated elements here that are organically intertwined but the contrary: all of them share the same weight because some aspects of the story require different stage language or even an artistic branch.

Maddie Birch - Choir of Dancers.

The performance, through the use of text, scenography, music, visuals and movement as separate means of storytelling, widens the everyday tale of a family falling apart into an allegory of responsibility over the consequences of our actions or lack of them, of impotency to surpass a devastating generation gap, and ultimately on the painful process of growing up to adulthood.

Christoph Viol - Choir of Dancers.

Our fourth character: a choir of dancers, who are representing the subconscious mind of the three main characters. Invisible to them, the choir may behave eventually as a punishing rage, as Mia’s friend, or as a silent judge, who pushes Mia, Grace, and Peter towards their respective dooms of sin, sloth or shame.
