My studio is my sanctuary.

I think most artists can relate to the feeling of entering ones own studio… it is akin to being in an intimate relationship. Sometimes there’s trepidation, fear, anxiety. We don’t want to face the expectations of our lover. Other times it can feel like a homecoming— the space welcomes you with warm embrace and shelters you from the vulgarity of the mundane world outside. There is an unpredictability to what awaits behind those doors when the artist enters…

After a long hiatus I am finally back in my (new) studio. A lot has happened since my last studio: I’ve traveled to Africa, Turkey and Taiwan, been on two artist residencies, loss a parent, loss some friends and gain some new ones, suffered heartbreak, had a solo exhibition, worked as a Creative Director, made money, loss money, Covid, quarantine, depression, spiritual awakening, broke my leg, sold paintings, and survived Covid. Indeed it has been a whirlwind to say the least. Today I feel more ready than ever to create… stay tuned!

Two weeks ago, when I first thought of the project, I would never imagine that so many people— from family to friends to total strangers... would actually take the time to come, stand across the street, and wave at my little 10th floor window in my quarantine hotel. In a world where social, mental, and emotional distance are being challenged, your gesture sparks the brightest of hope. Words cannot express the level of gratitude I have for your gesture. To everyone who made my time of isolation less lonely, I thank you from the bottom of my heart ♥️

“The Spaces Between Us”

The Time of Corona has shaped our physical (as well as emotional) connection from one another. Across the world, we are asked to keep at least 1.5 meter distance in between. Hugging, kissing and touching is no longer considered “safe”. In many European countries a gathering of more than 4 people is considered illegal and carries a large fine.

Being locked inside my hotel room and being monitored 24 hours a day, I feel rather isolated and lonely. I begin thinking a lot about the intrinsic human desire to be in contact with one another. Deprived of touch for so long, I crave human closeness more than ever before. When a good friend came to visit me, I wanted so much to give her a big hug. However, it was not possible, so we resorted to waving at one another from my 10th floor hotel window. I took a small video of her waving at me.

For this social-art project, I would like to invite anyone who is living in Taipei to come and visit me at the hotel. You can come at anytime of the day, just LINE me and then find the spot (DongMen Station Exit #4). I would be so happy if you would give me a little wave from across the street. I will make a short 10 second video of you.

Several years ago today I was still working in the traditional medium of oil painting on wood. Was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to collaborate briefly with Ronewa Art Projects owned by the fabulous Roger Washington.
