Art Nomads

Art Nomads ART NOMADS - MADE IN THE EMIRATES is an exhibition presented by Etihad Modern Art Gallery in partnership with MOMENTUM and The Sovereign Art Prize.

Dec 910th - 22nd: Tuesday-Thursday and Sunday 12:00- 19:00 Friday and Saturday 12:00- 20:00 The United Arab Emirates is more than just oil, desert heat and monumental architecture. This young country has a lively culture with a rich and diverse heritage; here contemporary artists reflect on a culture that is undergoing rapid development. The 14-day exhibition ART NOMADS - MADE IN THE EMIRATES will show 20 artists from a variety of disciplines. Together they represent a cross-section of fine art in the Emirates including exciting characters such as Maitha Demithan, Maisoon Al Saleh and Nadia Kaabi-Linke. In the centre of Kreuzberg, under the roof of the Kunstquartier Bethanien an old hospital and chapel, these artists will come together to introduce their exciting new ideas into the Berlin art scene. The exhibition is curated by, David Szauder, Zsuzsanna Petró and Rachel Rits-Volloch. Abu Dhabi. Where today skyscrapers and museums are built, fifty years ago Bedouins, fishermen and pearl divers lived in modest tents. Rarely has a population experienced such a rapid transformation. Between modernization and ancient traditions the region is now one of the most dynamic in the world, and Abu Dhabi is the new cultural melting pot of the Middle East. With The Louvre and The Guggenheim whom already both have sister spaces in Abu Dhabi, the metropolis plans to become a cultural destination of world rank and opens itself to the phenomenon of the culture nomads, sciences, economy, and of course the people behind the exhibitions whom make this transformation process possible. The exhibition ART NOMADS - MADE IN THE EMIRATES shows emerging young artists from the United Arab Emirates, influenced by cultural heritage and visual traditions and translated into the 21st century, while simultaneously presenting the most prominent artists of the older generation. The exhibition raises the question: How does the art from the Emirates find its place in global art history? How has artistic practice changed in recent decades through accelerated financial, social and cultural growth? Are there parallels to Berlin? The visitors are to expect an exhibition of artists from a region that is one of the most exciting of our time, young works which are not only new in their form and language, but also largely un-discussed in Western art history. In cooperation with The Etihad Modern Art Gallery, Abu Dhabi. The exhibition ART NOMADS - SOVEREIGN ART PRIZE will take place as part of a partnership with MOMENTUM in cooperation with the Etihad Modern Art Gallery and the Sovereign Art Prize. Four finalists of the SOVEREIGN MIDDLE EAST & NORTH AFRICA ART PRIZE, given for the first time this year, are on display in addition to the 14 selected UAE artists. All the finalists included have a close relationship with the United Arab Emirates. “Art Nomads will introduce a selection of young exciting artists from Abu Dhabi, the most modern, forward thinking capital of the Middle East, and be shown at the heart of Kreuzberg in the Kunsquartier Bethanien. Art Nomads will cement a connection between these two vastly contrasting capitals and demonstrate the two cities commonality in their growing contemporary art scene.”- David Szauder, Exhibition initiator and Curator. In addition to both these exhibitions, a symposium discussing the topic "Cultural Capital" will take place on the 10th December. In January, the sister exhibition ART NOMADS - MADE IN BERLIN will show a selection of Berlin artists in Abu Dhabi.

Often celebrated for her early work in which she used symbols of Emirati culture and heritage, such as saffron and henna. Makki’s later work becomes more abstract. She has passed through several stylistic phases, including realism and abstract expressionism. She has developed a technique inspired by modernism and is related to both her local environment and the human condition. Often known for her focus on the female figure.

The second musician performing tomorrow at our opening is Andyvazul, an award winning harmonica player, endorser of Seydel Harmonicas and composer. His music is a mixture of folk, blues and funk influenced by oriental melodies, and his performances take the audience to a psychedelic-ambient trip. At shows he also plays the flute, santur, jew’s harp, accord-, bass harmonicas and other authentic instruments, then by adding some crazy effects he creates layers with the loop station.
Here is a sample of what to expect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V93rrKm2UA4&feature=youtu.be

The final artist from The Sovereign Art Foundation that we would like to introduce before our opening night at the Kunstquartier Bethanien this Friday is Nadia Kaabi-Linke.

Nadia Kaabi-Linke was born in Tunis, Tunisia, 1978, and raised in Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates. She graduated from the University of Fine Arts, Tunis, in 1999, and earned a PhD at Université Paris-Sorbonne in 2008.

Growing up between Tunis, Kiev, and Dubai, and now residing in Berlin, Kaabi-Linke’s personal history of migration across cultures and borders has greatly influenced her work. With subtlety and concision, her works give physical presence to that which tends to remain invisible, be it people, structures, or the geopolitical forces that shape and control them. Kaabi-Linke takes inspiration from the forgotten or misused urban spaces around her.

We are partnered with Momentum Worldwide and there is more information on our website which you can reach through the 'Learn More' button.

It is only one week until our exhibition is open to the public and we would like to give you a taster of one of our sculptors participating in Art Nomads, Ahmed Al Faresi. Drawing inspiration from the subconscious he says the following about his work:

"In my art, I encrypt contemporary topics using various materials to generate subliminal messages of scientific, religious, poetic and political tones. My use of unconventional materials is so that pieces invoke as many of the senses as possible and to allow one to decipher bits of the message at varying intervals in time." - Ahmed Al Faresi.

Momentum Worldwide has partnered with Art Nomads as have The Sovereign Art Foundation, you can read more about them by pressing our 'learn more' button which will direct you to our website.

We have now confirmed two very exciting musicians for the opening of our show to compete our Emirati exhibition.

The first is called Eden Cami, a singer-songwriter born in a land of conflict. Living between two cultures and languages, she embraces them equally as her two mother tongues. Swinging between times, genres and languages, combining sounds and rhythms from the Middle East and the European West she communicates her stories and feelings, through music, for new journeys inside herself and with the audience.

We look forward to seeing you at the Kunstquartier Bethanien this coming Friday!

As we move swiftly towards the opening of Art Nomads- Made in the Emirates on Friday 9th December we would like to introduce the second of our inspiring artists from The Sovereign Art Foundation.

Walid Al Wawi will be showing 'Portrait Patriot' which consists of two A3 digital- colour prints of the artist’s passport photo, one of which is hand manipulated through constant rubber erasure and pencil drawing. The work attempts to deal with the contemporary image of the average Middle Eastern individual as he faces a form of “geo-political claustrophobia”, where borders of countries and geographical locations forcibly place him in a shallow and restricting dialogue. The work, a self- portrait of the artist, is a reprint of the artist’s “failed passport photo”, which he later hand-manipulated through forced erasure and pencil drawing, humorously but disparately trying to generate a peaceful and accepted image of himself.

Lamya Gargash is another of our fantastic artists whom will be showing her work at the Kunstquartier Bethanien as part of Art Nomads- Made in The Emirates show opening at 19:00 next Friday!

Concerned with the relics of an ever self-renewing architecture, Lamya Gargash documents the forgotten spaces in public and private realms in Emirati society. Through this practice, Gargash investigates the fast pace at which her surroundings are changing and what is left behind when a culture undergoes an unwavering thrust forward.

The show will run for 14 day and is open everyday with the exception of Mondays. Tuesday- Thursday and Sunday 12:00- 19:00, Friday and Saturday 12:00- 20:00

The Sovereign Middle East & North Africa Art Prize
Presented at ART NOMADS – MADE IN THE EMIRATES
9 – 22 December 2016

Following 12 successful years of Art Prize events in Asia, most notably Hong Kong, The Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF) arrived in the UAE in October 2016 with the inaugural Sovereign Middle East & North Africa Art Prize (MENA). Now recognised as the biggest and most prestigious contemporary art prize in its region, SAF’s Sovereign Asian Art Prize is designed to showcase the most important mid-career artists working within Asia Pacific, while raising money to help disadvantaged children. The migration of this prize to the UAE and MENA region has been met with great anticipation.

For Art Nomads – Made in The Emirates, Momentum Worldwide is proud to present, in partnership with the Sovereign MENA Art Prize, their finalists from the UAE: Hazem Harb, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, and Walid Al Wawi.

As part of Art Nomads- Made in the Emirates we are delighted to be able to present Maitha Demithan a young Dubai based artist taking part in our show opening on the 9th December (please see event page: 'Art Nomads-Made in the Emirates: Opening' for details).

Maitha Demithan’s oeuvre combines several mediums: photography, scanography, painting, drawing and photo transfer. Demithan’s subjects are people from her immediate surroundings - family members, friends, colleagues, thus representing typical figures from Emirati society. She created dream-like portraits by scanning separate body parts, then assembling, and layering them on top of each other. While rooted in tradition, Demithan’s work also reflects the multifaceted, colourful culture of her home country with the human figure in its epicentre.

We would like to introduce Khalid Al Banna whom will be showing his delightfully colourful fabric works made from the cloth used to make jalabiya, a traditional Emirati dress still popular with young women today.

Emiratis have witnessed the disappearance of many customs since the UAE was established over forty years ago, Al Banna believes his works help preserve and revive time-honored materials associated with the nation’s heritage.

Al Banna's work will be on show from the 10th December in the Kunstquartier Bethanien. For more information about the show press the "Learn More" button which will direct you to our website.

Here is the work of one of 20 Emirati artists showing in ART NOMADS- MADE IN THE EMIRATES: Maisoon Al Saleh whom focuses on bones and skulls as a means of telling stories that transcend age and gender. She says, "I wanted to focus on the inside and remind everyone of just how similar we all are in the end"
