LABOR SONOR

LABOR SONOR Labor Sonor—a platform for new experimental music, film and performance It is one of the platforms for the echtzeitmusik-scene. The book echtzeitmusik berlin.

Labor Sonor is a monthly series of concerts, performances, and video, now curated by Fernanda Farah, Christian Kesten, Andrea Neumann, Arthur Rother, and Derek Shirley in a small venue called Kunsthaus KuLe in the center of Berlin. Labor Sonor has become a meeting point for the vibrant and innovative music community in Berlin. echtzeitmusik means the field of ‘experimental’ music bordering new mus

ic, electro-acoustic improvisation, trash pop, avantgarde rock, noise, sound art, performance art, or electronica. The members of the echtzeitmusik-scene perform their own music, rather than interpreting the music of other composers or composing for others. These composer-performers work solo or in collective processes, mostly in long term collaborations. The echtzeitmusik-scene gave birth to internationally recognized phenomena like ‘Berlin Reductionism’. Meanwhile its protagonists present their music on festivals like MaerzMusik Sonic Arts Lounge, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, or Darmstädter Ferienkurse. self-defining a scene (german/english; Wolke 2011) collects writings by 40 authors of the scene on its history, theory and praxis. The russian label Mikroton released a 3-CD-set compiling echtzeitmusik berlin. Since 2013 the british label another timbre releases The Berlin Series with works by echtzeit musicians. Echtzeit musicians are part of an international network. In the past 17 years, more than 500 artists from 30 countries performed at Labor Sonor. There are usually three sets on one night, each playing or performing for about 20-30 minutes. The shows are always on Mondays. We are very happy to have the veteran composer Ernstalbrecht Stiebler live on stage at our fifth LABOR SONOR of 2023. The worked with Karl-Heinz Stockhausen in 1959/60, presented the "Studio für Neue Musik" at Hessischer Rundfunk for 26 Years and published worked as a music journalist for many years. His compositions are rooted in minimalism and open up microscopic sound-fields around each note. Stiebler will perform an improvised duo together with the composer and cello player Tilman Kanitz.

We highly recommend their release "The Pankow-Park Sessions Vol. 1." – we can't wait for their concert tomorrow.

Lee Méir: crying creatures crying [research / excerpt]

For this edition of Labor Sonor, Berlin based choreographer, performer and costume designer, Lee Méir will share part of her research towards a future evening length solo “crying creatures crying”, which will premiere in June 2024 in Berlin. In this solo Méir uses her body as a vessel for various hybrid creatures and beings; she invites the audience into a shared space of kinesthetic empathy and poetic expression, hoping to reflect on the creatures that inhabit our inner lives and what they reveal to us about ourselves and about the world around us.

Enrico Malatesta : Percussion

Percussion is an open project, aimed at broadening Enrico Malatesta's personal research on percussion instruments and their surfaces; intended as habitable spaces able to receive the vitality of what surrounds them, to adapt themselves and to act back. Percussion comprises multiple trajectories of research: from writing texts to the realization of scores/instructions for percussion ensembles; to the formalization of listening exercises; to the development of “polyrhythms” meant as the production of multiple informations given over through the relationships between movement, space and sound.

At Labor Sonor Malatesta will play an acoustic solo set using snare drum and objects.

Enrico Malatesta is an Italian percussionist and sound researcher active in the field of experimental music, sound intervention and performance; his practice explores the relations between sound, space and body, the vitality of materials and the morphology of surfaces, with particular attention to the percussive acts and the modes of listenings.

One day left till our LABOR SONOR at Ballhaus Ost for "Monat der zeitgenössischen Musik". Time to introduce our third act.

Maikon K works on the boundaries between performance, dance and theater. His work centers on the body and its ability to alter perceptions, influenced by the shamanic worldview in which the performer expands into different realities through specific body-based techniques such as song, nonverbal sounds, dance, visual signs, and ritual actions. He is interested in hybrid dramaturgies, states of presence, and the relationships between the sacred and the profane, the grotesque and the sublime. He is originally from Brazil and currently lives in Berlin. His main creations: DNA of DAN; The Solar A**s; Ecstasy Machine.

Multi-artist born in Brazil, interested in the transdisciplinarity between composition, performance, voice, musical production and video. Investigating power dynamics between and within bodies, Kupalua problematizes gender expectations and the institutionalization of human relations. With sounds coming from the most interior places such as the cervix or from the deepest spot in the Ocean, Kupalua is a physical experience, sound waves trespass your body and voices whisper to your bones other notions of darkness, womanhood, alien and terrain possibilities.

VanProject [Maria Muñoz López & Cris Arcos Cano]
present: cīvitās
https://vimeo.com/user115313239

Following our idea of approaching contemporary music and / or sonic & performative expression from all angles, our contribution to "Monat der zeitgenössischen Musik" frames performance art, musical theater and experimental electronic music.

The VanProject by the experimental artists Maria Muñoz López & Cris Arcos Cano follows a similar vision. The two artists based in Switzerland established the VanProject in 2020. Coming from a theater and visual arts background they expanded into (experimental-) music. Their project consists of the search for new forms beyond music expression that evolve into poetic happenings that include sound design, visuals, body and nature. In the beginning they worked with contemporary music composers and reinterprets current works. By now the project evolved towards self-creation with a collective spirit of integration with the audience.

For our evening in Ballhaus Ost, Maria and Cris will present their work "cīvitās", which is inspired by Ítalo Calvino's book "the invisible cities".

The performance reflects the crisis of overgrown cities; the fragility of technological systems, the destruction of the natural environment and the meaning of the city for society. During the performance one travels through different imaginary social scenarios in a search for the utopian city.

"Cities are a collection of many things: memories, desires, signs of a language; they are places of barter, as all the economic history books explain, but these barters are not only of goods, they are also barters of words, of desires, of memories".

Calvino, I. 1972

Rabih Beaini does not need a big introduction as the producer and founder of Morphine Records. He's been adding a lot of value to the contemporary music scene with his work, his label's releases as well as through the Morphine Raum project – a stunning studio, concert room and listening space in Berlin Kreuzberg.

We are very happy to have the man, that spends a lot of time behind the mixing desk on stage at Ballhaus OST, presenting his own blend of electronic music with his work "Clutch, Cable, Instrument, Voice".

The Lebanese-born producer and DJ specializes in grainy, imaginative analogue techno. His inventive, dark and emotional productions and DJ sets incorporate influences ranging from Krautrock to New Wave. These can also be found in Beaini's productions with Upperground Orchestra, a multi-piece improvisational ensemble that explores the terrain between electronica, techno and improvised jazz.

While his productions combine raw, elemental electronica and jazz, his Morphine label has released an equally forward-thinking selection of techno from the likes of Madteo, Hieroglyphic Being and Anthony "Shake" Shakir. Beaini has served as producer for LPs by American composer Pauline Oliveros, French mechanical orchestra inventor Pierre Bastien and explosive Indonesian duo Senyawa, among others.

The Open Body ° LABOR SONOR x The Listening Biennial | Ballhaus Ost

Save the date, The Listening Biennial will open this Saturday and we are happy to present its opening performance at Ballhaus Ost!

With "The Open Body" Brandon LaBelle tries to capture listening as an experience of transformation. What emerges throughout this long-durational work, is a meditative work of affective attunement, where the body opens itself to its surroundings, to itself and others, bringing audiences into a sensitive scene of slow attention and radical sympathy.

You can find all information on the work, Brandon LaBelle and the performers involved on our website.

Tickets can be purchased online via Ballhaus Ost or at the box office!

Just one more night and we meet in the courtyard of Theaterhaus Berlin.
Make sure to come by!

LABOR SONOR • OPEN AIR • Lottie Sebes, Crys Cole, Studio of Unconscious Music • Theaterhaus Mitte

We are very excited to have Lottie Sebes on stage, presenting her performance "Veritas Ventriloquist" – a performance and sound work which questions, transforms, and harnesses the historical entanglements of gender, voice and technology.

At the core of this performance is the Veritas Machine – a noisy, dynamic, woman-machine interface made of dismantled and reforged sewing machines, re-envisioned as an instrument and vocal synthesiser. This instrument is a set, an apparatus and a relational system of technological components which have been predominantly used by women in history.

Check out this fantastic video teaser!

Saturday is already peaking around the corner & the weather is looking great for a night of music under an open sky. We are really happy to have Alexander Markvart presenting his SUM project at Theaterhaus Berlin, featuring some well-known improvisers of the Berlin scene, such as Axel Dörner, Carina Khorkhordina, Bryan Eubanks and Samuel Hall!

SUM (Studio of Unconscious Music), an experimental project originally from Siberia, formed in 2007 and has acquired a new line-up in Berlin. Siberian industrial songs meet Berlin improvised music. SUM works in genres like jazz-punk, industrial techno, electro-acoustic, synth-pop, etc. mixing this with a lyrical component—remnants of the song form: chants, declamations, endless repetitions. At the same time, SUM music—be it gnostic rave or convulsive raw industrial—remains quite suitable for dancing.

Save the date! Saturday June 10th 2023 at the courtyard of Theaterhaus Berlin.

Temperatures are rising and we can't wait to see you all in the courtyard of Theaterhaus Berlin for our LABOR SONOR Open Air edition! Besides Lottie Sebes and Alexander Markvart's SUM we invited sound artist Crys cole!

crys cole is a Canadian sound artist based in Berlin. She works in composition, performance and sound sculpture / installation. Applying conceptual approaches that utilize haptic gestures and seemingly mundane materials, she creates subtle, texturally nuanced works that continuously retune the ear.

LABOR SONOR ° 2023 w. Nabelóse / Blasco & Voutchkova / Cater & Rasten | Kunsthaus KuLe

::: ABOUT THE PROJECT :::

With vocals and instruments mic’d so closely that the speakers bead with sweat, the duo of Ingrid Schmoliner, responsible for prepared piano and yodeling, and French horn player Elena Kakaliagou, repurpose traditional folk music from their native countries—Austria and Greece, respectively. The tone is solemn; a rosy hue spots the ghostlike pallor of its improvised dirges.

Frigid, funerary, dank, Nabelóse trails kelp and lichen, weaving elements of earth and water, blanched for winter cellars. Whispered moans cloud with every breath, soaked with loamy snow. While the French horn bleats in fallow fields, the piano plinks or bows in dull quivers. Schmoliner and Kakaliagou make pastoral music dusted with cold ash from old fires, tickled beneath the chin with woolen blankets.

Our LABOR SONOR programming is always set up to create a vast frame of sonic possibilities, bending borders of styles, performative approaches or genres – always trying to find intersections and connections. From 3D printer instruments, via new takes on traditional folk songs and extended techniques.

LABOR SONOR ° 2023 w. Nabelóse / Blasco & Voutchkova / Cater & Rasten | Kunsthaus KuLe

Fredrik and Seamus met during a different project, where they spent their free time experimenting with English and Scottish folk songs, coincidentally sharing a love of this music. Enough fun was had to keep playing and by now they have a repertoire of songs fused with their common interests in slow and fine tuned music.

::: ABOUT THE ARTISTS :::

Seamus Cater (1970) is an English musician, composer and songwriter chipping away at the edges of experimental music and British folk traditions. He sings, plays and tunes concertinas and free-reed instruments, performing and releasing as composer, songwriter and instrumentalist.

Fredrik Rasten (1988) is a guitarist and composer based in Berlin and Oslo. He is primarily focusing on musical exploration of just intonation and related sound phenomena, and in his work he is reaching for an active listening state wherein to intuitively explore the complexities of tone and harmony. On the guitar he is applying real time retuning of the instrument, vocal shadings and different preparations to create warm and fluctuating resonances.

Only a few days left till the first LABOR SONOR of this year – three live-concerts at Kunsthaus KuLe, Monday 17th of April.

We are really looking forward having Merche Blasco & Biliana Voutchkova presenting their first ever collaboration – featuring violin and a "3D printer instrument" called "Anette".

"Anette" is a 3D printer that Merche created as her onstage interlocutor. Through EMF microphones worn on her fingers, "Anette's" electromagnetic voice becomes audible to the human ear, and the sounds of her busy mechanical body are spatialized through a quadrophonic system.

Sounds very intriguing! We can't wait to witness this "trio" live on stage on Monday!

LABOR SONOR ° 2023 w. Nabelóse / Blasco & Voutchkova / Cater & Rasten | Kunsthaus KuLe

::: ABOUT THE ARTISTS :::

Merche Blasco is a multimedia artist and composer based in New York and currently living in Berlin.

She designs and builds imprecise technological assemblages that catalyze embodied forms of live electroacoustic composition and new modes of listening. Through her constructed devices, Merche attempts to establish a more horizontal relationship with other entities, distancing herself from parameters of precision, power, and control.

Biliana Voutchkova is a dynamic and thoroughly engaged interdisciplinary artist, composer-performer, violinist, improvisor and curator with a truly personal, unconventional artistic language.

Through the prism of listening, her early training as a classical violinist and the years of development as contemporary artist-performer, she explores states of spontaneity and intuitive resonance embodied in her multifaceted activities.

Von beweideten Buchseiten, Wellpappenreiterinnen und Lästlingen - eine Klangerzählung

Christina Ertl-Shirley creates audio*visual narratives in the form of sound installations, short stories, radio plays, drawings, poems, radio features....

To this end, she immerses herself intensively in microcosms, such as the flora and fauna of the Lieberos Desert in Brandenburg, the world of the animal "paper nautilus" or the environment of wood beetles in the Berlin forest. The starting point for her work is traveling these niches through scientific, historical, subjective and quaint material.

She draws from these elements and comments on them through her own acoustic, visual and haptic investigations, realizing artistic narratives from them.

LABOR SONOR 28.11.22 /w Gilles Aubry / Etienne Nillesen / Christina Ertl-Shirley at Kunsthaus Kule

The next concert of our LABOR SONOR series is taking place on Monday the 28th of November 2022!

We will present you three [SOLO] performances – one of them for "Extended Snare Drum" by Etienne Nillesen, who is a Cologne based performer, improviser and percussionist. He works internationally as a soloist, and in group and collaborative settings.

Mostly only using a single snare drum, he explores and pushes the limits of the natural acoustics of the instrument using conventional playing techniques as well as extended techniques, especially engaging with materials through horizontal movements and friction to explore their properties.

Being interested in phenomena like temporality, impermanence and minimalism, he creates sonic spaces that convey sincerity, balance, austerity and naturalness, authentically combining imagination, intuition and sensitivity. Etienne uses a minimal approach to the instrument with the maximum outcome of complexity in sound. These complex, detailed, and mostly subtle sonorities require a great deal of concentration for the performer as well as the listener, making the act of listening just as important as the production of the sounds.

He has been gathering international acclaim for his unique snare drum language.
