LABOR SONOR | Translating Spaces Festival 2021

Raed Yassin – A Small Leak of an Interior Monologue

During the past year, the world went through a period of isolation unlike anything ever seen before in history. Our collective unconscious has been deeply scarred on so many levels, it will take time to digest the many guises and echoes that will boomerang back to us in future from this prolonged experience. Calls to communicate, complaints and grievances, hymns and songs, thoughts of existence, life and death are but a few common traits of the outpouring of emotions we all felt. It is as if these feelings are on a feedback loop inside us, echoing and moving at an irregular pace, not knowing when they will resurface again.

This process mimics that of a constant droning hum, a sound that resonates only inside our body while our mouth is closed. Humming is a very personal act, one that is the sonic manifestation of internal feelings that are seldom expressed outwardly; an interior monologue of a resonant body that never speaks.

The work here is a space within a space: inside it, the sound of six singers humming a tune can be heard. The work represents the disembodied experience, through the humming inside our lungs, to the disbelief of our eyes and ears, like the allegory of a Russian doll that peels back the complex layers of human emotion.

Taking an intermedial approach, the Trio prepared its performances by intensively exploring the venue of its appearance and its potentials (acoustic qualities, architecture, lighting, objects), moving from one element to the other, using them to reshape the space by continuously altering its purpose and meaning.

For the festival, the Trio did abandon this open and improvised approach, performing the same piece twice in two different locations. In the piece developed for TRANSLATING SPACES, the Trio played with the phenomena of the presence of absent elements and symbolic exaggeration, among others. The concept postulated the translation of specific characteristics of one space into another: features of the Ballhaus Ost auditorium were made acoustically/visually present and became perceivable within the public space of the adjacent cemetery park, and vice versa.

Dream Life is an audio-visual guide on how to achieve your personal DREAM LIFE, the lifestyle you have always dreamed of.

The installation consists of three parts:

1. THE INTRODUCTION

2. THE GUIDE

3. THE CONTEMPLATION

The "Translation" from the audio-visual installation that was shown at ausland, from August 27-29, the concert version took the sounds (and parts of the visual) to the big hall at Ballhaus Ost and fills the space by flickering, silence, tension, change, sounds whose structures encompasses every conceivable form… obscure, minimal, digital, electronic.

Two audio-visual environments exist back-to-back, the first a representation of a real place, and the second its imaginary reverse. Like a complex woven fabric, this imaginary reverse creates and supports what we see and hear from the ‘front’ while at the same time acting as a kind of waste product, a neglected inversion. The idea that this recorded place might exist somewhere in the outside world in three-dimensions is thrown into disarray by the presentation of audio-visual space as a single plane with two surfaces.

Five instruments—five people playing instruments—within a space.

Space: St. Elisabeth Kirche

Christian Kesten, composer, artist, vocalist and co-curator of LABOR SONOR presented with „Spacing Places“ a new composition at the „Translating Spaces“ Festival in 2021. The work translated the sonic impact of five acoustic instruments from St. Elisabeth Kirche into the main hall of Villa Elisabeth.

During the course of the piece the instrumentalists changed positions, assuming different distances to each other, playing more distantly or closer together. Different constellations of sounds arose in the space, different sound architectures, the interplay of smaller and greater distances making the space acoustically perceivable for the listeners.

More informations on the composition and its concept can be found in the video description.

Taking off from the duo’s previous iteration in this series which involved Two Plants, a Nagra and an Oscillator having a conversation on how do we continue to function and exist in conditions that are contributing to our extinction.

For LABOR SONOR | Translation Spaces Nguyễn + Transitory installed a sound piece using an Oscillator, a Very Long Vertical Tape Loop and 4 Very Different Speakers exploring the spatial and sonic resonances of the main hall in Villa Elisabeth. They carried on exploring the intimacies and vulnerabilities of sound in space, opening up conversations in the ethereal and speaking close-by to the energies that each specific site embodies.

A dispositive for very slow aesthetic observation
Space: Villa Elisabeth_studio 3.

In our every day life, our surroundings tend to appear as given. They tend to be simply there, independently of our actions, of our perceptions. Nevertheless, unexpected discontinuities, fissures in the obviousness of the ordinary, allow us to sense them as continuously emerging in mutual dependence to our actions, to our perceptions.

Alex Arteaga's project departs from an investigation of the environments arising near Villa Elisabeth through an ecology of aesthetic research practices in different media—sound, video/photography, written language.

The artifacts produced through these practices were organized and installed as a dispositive for very slow aesthetic observation: a constellation of aesthetic objects endowed with the agency of inducing aesthetic (inter-)action – a variety of dynamic relationship with the surroundings focused on the performance of sensorimotor and emotional skills in a field of shared agencies.

Video documentation now online!

From the 27.-29. August 2021 LABOR SONOR created the festival "translating spaces". The festival took place in many different venues and spaces, challenging the listener to "listen twice".

We are very happy to now present you the video documentation of "translating spaces" on our website!

We will shine a light on the different works, by the different artists, that had contributed to "translating spaces", in the following weeks

Tonight Ignaz Schick will present the Berlin version of his audio-installation "Ghost/Vibrations" at Kule! The installation will be set up in the theater room of the venue and Ignaz will perform on his installation as well!

"Ghost/Vibrations" is an 8 channel audio installation, with 8 speakers, connected to nylon strings - High- and low-frequency pitches set the speaker membranes and nylon threads vibrating. On the nylon threads and on the membranes are found objects referring to the venue and city in which the work is shown, which are also set in vibration and make each speaker object sound different.

The picture was taken by Schick, when he presented "Ghost/Vibrations" at his exhibition "The Theory of Everything" at Liebig12 in 2021.

Make sure to check our hygiene concept on our website.

The event will be held under 2G+ rules.

Besides his own work as a musician and artist Ignaz also runs the label "Zarek". The label started as a channel to release Schick's own output, but quickly evolved into a platform for the Berlin "Echtzeitmusik" scene and features by now more than 30 releases.

In 2021 the label was featured Initiative Neue Musik Berlin / field notes magazine and we recommend a deep dive into the labels catalog via its Bandcamp page.

Happy New Year – a bit belated, but we hope you had a great start into 2022! As you might know we had to cancel Ignaz Schick's installation at Kunsthaus Kule that we planned for our December installment in 2021 - and we are more than happy we can now present "Ghost/Vibration" on the Monday the 10th of January.

In this Berlin version of his Ghost/Vibration series, Ignaz Schick will position eight loudspeakers in the theatre room of KuLe, which are connected to the ceiling by nylon threads. High- and low-frequency pitches set the speaker membranes and nylon threads vibrating. On the nylon threads and on the membranes are found objects referring to the venue and city in which the work is shown, which are also set in vibration and make each speaker object sound different.

Unfortunately we have to announce that Ignaz Schick won’t be able to play tonight. On short notice we decided to close the year not only with Yara Mekawei’s audio-visual performance – “658” Listen to the Holy text“ – but also with a LABOR SONOR „All Stars“ concert.

Fernanda Farah, Christian Kesten, Andrea Neumann, Arthur Rother and Derek Shirley will close our season at Kunsthaus KuLe – as a band, or as five solo performers, expect the unexpected, everything from Noise to Christmas Carols and all the in betweens.

Yara Mekawei is a multi- context / multi- media artist, a prolific artist and scholar – and more.

Mekawei‘s sonic bricolages draw inspiration from the dynamic flow of urban centers and the key infrastructure of cities. She is interested in the philosophy of architecture, social history, and philosophical literature. Mekawei implemented the optical transaction from the musical conversation and transferred the sound waves to visual forms.

For our last LABOR SONOR concert series Mekawei will present her audiovisual installation – “658” Listen to the Holy text – at Kunsthaus KuLe. This electronic music project is based on the hidden influential figures in Sufi history whose stories are mentioned in heavenly books. By transferring the text to numbers and composing the sound based on it. By working on history, the project is bringing the analog rhythm of the past to the digital
waves of the present.

Ignaz Schick is an active member of the Berlin "Echtzeitmusik" scene since many years and never fails to bring fresh ideas and concepts into the spaces he is performing in.

In 2021 Ignaz presented a larger selection of his visual work including graphic scores, vinyl objects and sound installations in Berlin at Liebig12, titled "The Theory Of Everything".

The exhibition had four chapters and its second was titled "Ghost/Vibrations" – a sound installation using nylon strings and speaker membranes, which will be set into vibrations. For LABOR SONOR Schick will adapt his installation for the bar space of KuLe.

Sometimes an artist describes himself better than anyone else could and why not quote straight from their press-release? Radu Malfatti is an austrian trombone an bass-harmonica player and part of the quartet "does sound have a shadow" which will perform next Monday at our LABOR SONOR concert series at Kunsthaus Kule.

His career in his own words: "1965-70 looked for the Academy of Music Graz,
studied with Eje Thelin, spoke with Sonny Rollins, drank coffee with Luigi Nono,
likes to play tennis with Doris, read a lot, forgot everything."

We are very much looking forward to have Radu round at Kule!

Urutau, Mother of the Moon is a live-played audiovisual installation made of tree leaves, feathers and a bicycle wheel.

The installation is built using found materials, carefully collected by myself in different woods and cities. It is a nocturnal fabulation around the bird Urutau (Potoo) also known as "Ghost Bird".

Found in the deep forests and urban spaces of South America, but rarely seen because of its wondrously artful camouflage, the bird is most famous for singing: a nocturnal, mysterious, haunting chant, often interpreted as jinx and feared. Through the potentialities of sound, images and of my own body, I re-imagine the female body, and the animal body, open to possibilities beyond places of curse, punishment and violence

Marina Cyrino is a Brazilian flutist and sound artist currently living in Berlin. She works across the fields of improvisation, composition, instrument building, video and performance art. She holds a PhD in Music Performance and Interpretation from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Marina will perform live on Urutau next Monday, 15th of November at our LABOR SONOR concert series at Kule.
