LABOR SONOR

LABOR SONOR Labor Sonor—a platform for new experimental music, film and performance It is one of the platforms for the echtzeitmusik-scene. The book echtzeitmusik berlin.

Labor Sonor is a monthly series of concerts, performances, and video, now curated by Fernanda Farah, Christian Kesten, Andrea Neumann, Arthur Rother, and Derek Shirley in a small venue called Kunsthaus KuLe in the center of Berlin. Labor Sonor has become a meeting point for the vibrant and innovative music community in Berlin. echtzeitmusik means the field of ‘experimental’ music bordering new mus

ic, electro-acoustic improvisation, trash pop, avantgarde rock, noise, sound art, performance art, or electronica. The members of the echtzeitmusik-scene perform their own music, rather than interpreting the music of other composers or composing for others. These composer-performers work solo or in collective processes, mostly in long term collaborations. The echtzeitmusik-scene gave birth to internationally recognized phenomena like ‘Berlin Reductionism’. Meanwhile its protagonists present their music on festivals like MaerzMusik Sonic Arts Lounge, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, or Darmstädter Ferienkurse. self-defining a scene (german/english; Wolke 2011) collects writings by 40 authors of the scene on its history, theory and praxis. The russian label Mikroton released a 3-CD-set compiling echtzeitmusik berlin. Since 2013 the british label another timbre releases The Berlin Series with works by echtzeit musicians. Echtzeit musicians are part of an international network. In the past 17 years, more than 500 artists from 30 countries performed at Labor Sonor. There are usually three sets on one night, each playing or performing for about 20-30 minutes. The shows are always on Mondays. Bryan Eubanks (b. 1977, US) develops his music through solo work and collaboration. Since 1999 he has participated in many short and long term projects, and regularly presents his work internationally. Continually active in a variety of contexts: improvisation; composing electronic and acoustic works for small ensembles, solo instruments, computers, and electronics; organizing and curating concerts for other artists; building electronic instruments. He currently lives in Berlin.

Kaffe Matthews pioneering music maker who works live with space, data, things, and place to make new electroacoustic composition, her past has taken her through things such as midi violin, theremin, star maps, NASA scientists, sharks, children, solo walks and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra to create a massive body of works for sites such as concert halls, city streets, basement clubs, radio, galleries, deserts, living rooms, and the human body. The physical experience of music is also key to her approach so she also invents unique interfaces such as the sonic armchair, the sonic bed and a range of sonic bikes which offer new paths into composition for makers, and ways in to listening for wide ranging audiences worldwide.

Today she is focused on dangerous unknowns improvising with space, audience and a new modular instrument, the Ripley. A noise filter system designed through the 12 Gates of alchemical discoveries made by the 15th century alchemist George Ripley, backfeeding and live sampling throughout.

ZONE NULL
Tony Elieh - bass guitar, live-electronics
Burkhard Beins - bass guitar, live-electronics

The Berlin-based duo Zone Null unites Tony Elieh and Burkhard Beins for an unusal encounter of two bass guitars and a variety of analog and digital live-electronics. While for Elieh the bass guitar has always been a main focus of his musical activities, as an improviser and namely with Karkhana, Calamita and the Lebanese indie rock band Scrambled Eggs, Beins only recently expanded his already wide range of extended percussion, experimental electronics and sound art by co-founding the Krautrock-Noise band Slurge as their bass player. The sonic fiction of Zone Null evolves and florishes on the broad musical horizon these two gentlemen have in common, ranging from musique concréte and contemporary composition via improvised and experimental music to electronic, post-punk and avantgarde rock.

We are more than happy to have Steffi Weismann presenting her work „Generation S“ at Kunsthaus KuLe. Steffi is a vital part of the Berlin scene since many, many years, member of the Maulwerker ensemble and works within the field of sound art and performance.

Steffi Weismann: Generation S
for voices, objects, field recordings, live-microscope cam
(2018, 21')

„Generation S“ is audiovisual piece that reflects the relationship between nature and technology over almost five generations. Acoustic spaces and specifically amplified sounds immerse in an abstract microcosm and yet remain close to our physical existence and perception. How does a 10 year old girl imagine life of earth in the future and how are scientists dealing with multi-resistant germs? The timing and process of the composition is characterized by cicles and unpredictable twists. Sounds of amplified brain waves or electrostatically charged hair are part of performative actions with microphoned and microscopized objects. With her live voice, the performer creates laryngeal vibrations, breaths or hissing noises that create synergies between machine, creature and plant, and mix with field recordings and live material sounds.
