NON Berlin, Asia contemporary art platform

NON Berlin, Asia contemporary art platform asia contemporary art platform NON Berlin NON is a project space founded by video artist Chan Sook Choi and architect Ido Shin.

As Koreans living in Berlin since 2001, since the very beginning they have been interested in seeking a kind of universal identity spanning the various backgrounds of Berlin based contemporary artists in order to examine the question of identity as it is often perceived from the outside; according to gender, nationality and cultural milieu. To this end they created NON Berlin – Asia Contemporary A

rt Platform – in 2014. Two ideas are the mainstay of this:

firstly, ‘NON’ means ‘to discuss’ in Chinese. Thus NON Berlin opens up a platform for discussing the dichotomy between ‘East and West’ and ‘Asia and Europe’ and initiates ‘face to face’ meetings, facilitating exchange, discourse and networking. Secondly, and somewhat paradoxically, NON Berlin serves as a negation, ‘not Berlin’, although the project space – a draw for artists and producers from the independent cultural scenes of the world – is situated in Berlin’s centre. NON Berlin is not limited to a particular artistic scene or cultural identity. Instead, it presents projects that seek new interdisciplinary perspectives in order to create an intermediary zone for re-evaluating existing categories. Nomads from multiple or dynamic locations, and mostly stemming from multicultural backgrounds, possess a sensibility for current topics, transformations and fractures via their positioning as contemporary artists. NON Berlin has been a member of the Network of Independent Berlin Project Spaces and Initiatives since 2016. In 2018, NONBerlin received the prize Independent Art Space by Senate Department for Culture and Europe Berlin.

Marcelina Wellmer’s artistic research focuses on the influence of humans on the landscape, the technological dependencies and the dissociations between nature, man and industry.
In "Solid Landscapes - loose parts" Wellmer presents three of her latest works „Solid Landscapes", "Porous" and "Amalgam“. With the video recordings, photographs and objects the artist invites the viewer to take a closer look at the never-ending growth of industrial and production areas and a vast man-made (anti-)fusion of nature and technology.

WAITING ROOM is still waiting for you until this Sunday. This Sunday we will share our last moment with a live act from NICK KLEIN ( ). This will be the final musical moment of the ritual that is initiated during the opening, and closing of our event. Don’t miss out on the last chance to check out the artwork from the emerging seven artists of WAITING ROOM this week and please join us this Sunday at 17:30 for our goodbye to our waiting journey.

Nick Klein is an artist who mostly works in sound vocabularies and the subcultures around it. Originally from south Florida, currently based in Berlin (pursuing his MA in Sound Studies and Sonic Arts), Klein is attracted to sociality and low end frequencies. Klein has released recordings on labels like Alter, Ideal Recordings, and L.I.E.S., while running the Psychic Liberation imprint. Klein has a forthcoming LP on Ideal Recordings, and a long form listening cassette on Enmossed.

** We are excited to introduce ‘Forma’ presented by Mauro Ventura & Kiani Del Valle with Cem Dukkha and Gertrūda Gilytė and performers from Ukraine on an opening day. Save the date and please join us from 7 pm, 14th April 2020.

‘Forma’, is a performative installation amplifying visual works by Mauro Ventura, with sound composition by Cem Dukkha and spoken words by Gertrūda Gilytė. The performance and movement aspect of the work is curated, choreographed, and performed by Kiani Del Valle. The work combines Del Valle’s Anthropological practice of the human body, juxtaposed with Ventura’s unique research in ancient languages, and occult ritualistic ceremonies. Both Ventura & Del Valle perform in the work in collaboration with 6 performers with similar approaches to their independent work. FORMA, further than performative installation, also becomes a sonic experience where the music and the bodies converse with each other and inform each other's movement, direction, position and behaviour. The aftermath of the performance becomes an installation, exhibiting the action base works in conjunction with the sculptures from Meltem Rukiye Calisir as well.

‘Forma’ aims to collect and archive human body prints and their extensions in a ceremony that considers new narratives according to each place where it’s performed. The narrative occupies politics or a system of beliefs that may vary to fit the local site and the performers in the cause.

ABOUT ARTISTS:

KIANI DEL VALLE

Kianí del Valle is a Berlin-based dancer, choreographer, director & performance curator originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico with professional experience in New York, Montreal, London, Los Angeles & Copenhagen. Driven by anthropological, biological and sociological concepts, Kianí's work merges the lines of contemporary dance & performance art within film, photography, architecture, pop culture, technology and sound. Her embodied practice is guided by the interdependence of the act of physical exhaustion, intuitive groove, movement meditation, ritualistic practices, migrational journeys, and paranormal experiences. This is all intertwined in the craft of theatrics and amplified with a visual component that often taps into the magical, surreal, fictional and dystopian. In recent works she has deepened her research in finding the subjectivity of historical Caribbean narratives, particularly in postcolonial realities and taíno indigenous culture.

After studying painting and sculpture for 10 years, she took a leap into dance & performance. Del Valle trained in Puerto Rico at Balleteatro de Nana Hudo, Ballet de San Juan, Andanza Dance Company & ''Hincapié'' Experimental dance troupe. Outside of Puerto Rico, Kianí trained & became part of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre (NYC) Rastro Dance (NYC) Sasha Waltz & Guest (Berlin) & Matanicola (Berlin). Del Valle holds a BFA in Contemporary Choreography from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. She is the founder & choreographer of the Berlin based KDV DANCE ENSEMBLE. Kianí has been a guest professor for university dance programs like Northern School of Contemporary Dance UK, Performing Arts School of University of South Wales & PERA Performative School in Northern Cyprus. For the past years she has collaborated extensively with musicians such as Ziur, Kelman Duran, Floating Points, Clark, Objekt, Raven, Lotic, Bendik Giske, Ibeyi, Unknown Mortal Orchestra & Rammstein. Additionally she is the founder and curator of CUERPO EN ECOS, a festival celebrating movement and sound collaborations in Puerto Rico. Del Valle has presented her works in institutions like Funkhaus Berlin, Konzerthaus Berlin, Barbican London, CCCB Barcelona, Getty Museum LA, National Sawdust Brooklyn & Tribeca Performing Arts Centre NYC.

MAURO VENTURA

Mauro Ventura was born in Vila Nova de Famalicão, studied in Facultade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto (2011) passing by HFBK in Dresden after (2014).

In the city of Porto, Mauro started projects like Arena Spa Superiora, originating the genesis of their work with rave culture, and entered performative and subversive events with the organisation ACIDA. Associating to the iconography and aesthetics of Porto's q***r nightlife through Maus Habitos and Passos Manuel, Mauro was immersed by less conforming spaces.

Moving to Berlin in 2018, painting, installation and developing their visual identity became priority. Mauro's investigation asserts itself to the research of ancient languages that study the occult, inducing a hyperreal, or parallel video-game-like melting pot of syncretism. These alternate realities indulge in ritualesque actions and ways of painting that question formats with the aim to transform social structures.

At the moment they work together with the organization and label Herrensauna doing the artistic direction and curatorial management, as well as Dauwd’s label Psssh.

CEM DUKKHA

Cem Dukkha was born into a Turkish household in the Austrian capital Vienna. He settled in Berlin as co-founder and label manager from Herrensauna, representing the q***r underground music scene. Having established himself as a dj and musician through this, he started working on interpreting his experience in sound through musical production and visual research, moving forward as a experimental self-tought visual & sound director. Lately, he has been developing his painting career and researching on ceremonial devices with an interplay between virtual ancestry and their installations. In their artistic approach, which has been focused on interests of concrete music, leftfield industrial, idm and psychedelic rock, we feel the moodiness of the doom metal background but we ascend in a humorous call to their witty collage-like sensus and we get invited into a symbolical interplay between emotional horror and avant-garde anecdotic sci-fi;

GERTRŪDA GILYTĖ

Gertrūda Gilytė graduated Masters in Masters in Art in Context, from the University of Arts, Berlin (2022) and from the Sculpture Department in Vilnius Academy of Arts (2016), Political Science in Vilnius University (2015).

Since 2020, GILYTĖ represented by Annka Kultys Gallery.

!! Last week of the exhibition !! "Foibles of a Reconstruction" by Trong Gia Nguyen is on view until this Sunday. We are happy to see you there.

Location: NON Berlin c/o Meinblau Projektraum , Christinenstr. 18/19, 100119 Berlin

+++ Info +++

Foibles of a Reconstruction addresses the audience as an “implied reader” and asks them to labor through the many twists and turns that Nguyen encodes within the work. The power play between artist and viewer is confrontational, an experiment in miscommunication that values fragmentation and interruption – traits inherent in language. His object-installations employ various architecture to not only create confusion and alienation, but ultimately to bridge the abysses of failed speech.

Trong Gia Nguyen (*1971, Saigon, Vietnam) is a Vietnamese-American artist based in Brussels, Belgium. Interested in the fragmentation of power, he deals with the complex relationship between artwork and viewer, whereby the act of seeing is rendered both active and passive.

CEM DUKKHA

Cem Dukkha was born into a Turkish household in the Austrian capital Vienna. He settled in Berlin as co-founder and label manager from Herrensauna, representing the q***r underground music scene. Having established himself as a dj and musician through this, he started working on interpreting his experience in sound through musical production and visual research, moving forward as a experimental self-tought visual & sound director. Lately, he has been developing his painting career and researching on ceremonial devices with an interplay between virtual ancestry and their installations. In their artistic approach, which has been focused on interests of concrete music, leftfield industrial, idm and psychedelic rock, we feel the moodiness of the doom metal background but we ascend in a humorous call to their witty collage-like sensus and we get invited into a symbolical interplay between emotional horror and avant-garde anecdotic sci-fi;

+++ Info +++
