Sophie Kovel .kovel (b. 1996 in Los Angeles, lives and works between Paris and New York) situates artworks, architectural structures and ephemera within locations that often connect to intricate archival, governmental and representational systems. This process of extrapolation exposes seemingly neutral objects and spaces as charged sites of ideological reproduction. What might initially appear as merely documentary images of an institution or a collection are in fact highly critical. Kovel reveals the true motives and interests of the histories, structures and dynamics concealed under the remit of cultural heritage. For the artist, photographs are not only visual records but traces of ideological ferment. They therefore demand more from viewers than simply recognizing the content, marveling at the opulence, or registering the sobriety.
Please join us for the opening of ‘Sophie Kovel. Gigantomania’ on Thursday, October 15 from 7 pm.

Sophie Kovel .kovel (geb.
