These self-portraits from the "in this space we breathe" series explore spirituality as a link to ancestors. Khadija Saye performs rituals using sacred objects from Gambia, blending African, Christian, and Islamic traditions. Saye commented that, "whilst exploring the notions of spirituality and rituals, the process of image making became a ritual in itself".

In 2017, Saye and her mother died in the Grenfell Tower fire that occurred in North Kensington, London. remained, the rest were destroyed in the fire. Raw scans have been recovered and used to make the silkscreen prints seen at C/O Berlin.

Augenzeugnisse—with Maurice Weiss: "After reunification, deep foundation pits were dug out across Berlin. These massive holes were at Friedrichstadtpassage and at Potsdamer Platz, to give just two examples. Berliners became impassioned architecture critics. Everyone knew all about architects such as Sir Norman Foster, Axel Schulte, and Richard Rogers as well as their buildings around the world. But where did the armies of construction workers come from? As a student, I worked on construction sites for years and was more interested in the background of the construction workers than the big architecture stars. They came from across Europe, mostly from Poland, Ireland, and Portugal. None of them spoke German. With my 5 × 5-inch plate camera I took photos in the manner of August Sander. One of the construction workers was from a village in northern Portugal. Unfortunately I’ve forgotten his name. He was responsible for insulation and ironwork at the massive Friedrichstadtpassage site. I asked him if he knew what he and his colleagues were actually building there. ‘It must be a church,’ he thought. ‘Such a big building can only be a place of worship."

We asked nine OSTKREUZ photographers to share their stories about one of their photographs as eyewitnesses to history—from the perspective they had when they took it and the knowledge they have now. Join us on this journey back in time!

Augenzeugnisse—with Jordis Antonia Schlösser: "In the summer of 1997, when seniors still went dancing at Pratercafé every Saturday and the cranes against the skyline at Potsdamer Platz promised thrilling transformation, I was new to Berlin and not yet settled in. I wandered the streets as often as I could, feeling a little lost and full of yearning. I discovered vacant lots, open spaces, voids. Monumental fire walls that seemed almost alive. The gaze of an older couple looking through a window onto a transformed world. A boy on a bus rising into the sky. A couple cuddling beneath an enormous painted raven. A horse at Potsdamer Platz. The empty city seemed full of possibilities. You could sense the stories in the old walls and empty spaces were there to be filled. But the time for dreams was soon over: briefcases were already stuffed with investors’ plans. I once encountered them on an empty lot at Chausseestrasse. Berlin’s empty spaces had to be filled in quickly, the ground staked out and divided, and the new capital completed. And so my wanderings more and more often ended in front of concrete walls."

Augenzeugnisse—with Werner Mahler: "The evening of November 9, 1989. | The Berlin Wall has fallen, that symbol of division and exclusion. | It’s unbelievable. I have to be there, have to take photos. | My wife and son and I drive from Brandenburg to the border crossing at Bornholmer Strasse, which is rumored to be open. | Countless cars and people are teeming at the still-closed border. Only pedestrians can cross the border, so I head off on foot to take photos. I make plans to meet my family around midnight at Café Kranzler. I walk through the entire city, from the bridge at Bornholmer Strasse to the crossing at Heinrich-Heine-Strasse, reaching Kurfürstendamm at mid-night. Naturally we can’t find each other amid the celebrating masses. | I keep walking to the Brandenburg Gate. | All the major Western news agencies have set up their cameras and broadcast vans on the Western side of the wall. At Brandenburg Gate the wall is quite wide, and euphoric people from East and West are dancing on it, lit by the glare of headlights. Like many, I jump over to the Eastern side. It’s an absurd feeling: one day before, the wall had been a no-go zone and approaching it would have spelled imprisonment or even death. | I look east at the Brandenburg Gate in darkness. | A happy-looking man with his arms spread walks toward me. | I shoot. | The Eastern side is in darkness. | Small groups of seemingly helpless GDR border soldiers are standing with flowers in their gun barrels. | It’s very early on the morning of November 10, 1989. | A one-in-a-century day. | I want to get home and am one of the first to walk from the West to the East through the Brandenburg Gate."

20 Jahre C/O Berlin
