30/06/2021

"It is obvious to spot a plant-like figure in the middle of the composition of the “Untitled” (2020) with the big teeth; it is almost related to another figure like holding it as a baby. In Corona-Fly (2020), it is clearly depicting a multi-layered scenery like a surrealist art historical painting, and the drawings on the left side of the composition connect us with its poetry. Fruits, leaves, letters, and an eye float in the air, like swimming in the sea; is it the Sun on the right above? How would life on Earth be possible without it?
Another recent painting, Mum (2020) focuses on framing a moment of a gaze. There is a figure looking like a child; the wings which are attached to its body are also looking like the tangled curls of the girl, or the boy, or the girl… Is the child staring to a seed, is what she or he is holding (like a mobile phone) and staring at is a seed? If one cannot be sure of the answers to any of these questions, they can be sure about one thing. The blue animal figure looking like a sheep is emphasising the presence of Donna Harraway in the room, it is her smiling at the viewer. These recent drawings share common visual vocabulary like sharing an art history, like Dalí, Kandisky or Miró; lines, colours or dimensions are painted as juxtaposed forms. They are intelligibly referring to our collective unconscious."

Kunstverein Siegen is finally open to the public from tomorrow, Tuesday, May 18, 2021!

"In the two-person-exhibition 'Window Shopping', the artists Alexandra Leykauf and Eva Berendes enter into dialogue and relate forms of reception of looking at shop windows to their works on display. Window shopping refers to the act of looking at a shop window or a display case. Viewers place themselves in the pictorial still life behind the window and imagine using goods and products - without pursuing an immediate purchase intention.

The simultaneity of viewing and using is more evident in the English expression than in the German "Schaufensterbummel". The latter describes the act of window shopping less as a conflict of fantasy and reality, but rather as a sequence of movements of slow walking, strolling and repeated lingering in front of the window displays. Through sculptures, wall-based works and site-specific interventions, the artists allude to contexts of consumption and action. They refer to architectural elements of the transition from outside to inside and lead visitors through doors, gates, windows and barriers into and through the exhibition - into another (consumer) world."
