Save the date: Peggy Buth: Vom Nutzen der Angst/ The Politics of Selection | Book launch at Klemm’s | SEP 18, 2022 | from 11:30 AM onwards 👀
On this occasion Peggy Buth will be in conversation with Florian Ebner, Reinhard Braun and Susanne Holschbach.
“The book The Politics of Selection recounts a political history of our cities and suburbs. For the artist urban space is a place where the social and the economic overlap, at once forming and deforming the space. In three chapters Peggy Buth reports on social utopias and economic interests, on the attempt to include and exclude people, on hope, and on discrimination and defamation. Her artistic research focuses on the suburbs of Paris, social housing projects and streets in the US state of Missouri, and former working-class neighbourhoods in the Ruhr region, in the north of Essen and in parts of Duisburg.”
-
Peggy Buth, born 1971 in Berlin, studied photography and fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig and was a fellow at the Jan van Eyck Academy Maastricht, Netherlands. In 2020 she was appointed as a professor at the Department of Photography at the Kunsthochschule Kassel.

“(...) Seeing an artwork reach its full and varied potential is so satisfying and is why I think Boelens’ work is so gratifying. First, there are the artworks, which are graceful and substantial. Boelens is excellent at thinking about her work spatially, so her work often dialogue, trialogue, and chorus together. And then the supporting elements begin to
appear: a bench carefully sanded back, speakers reclaimed from a church, clamps and joints purposed made for spools and spindles. They are beautiful examples of interconnection and harmony where the artwork reaches beyond itself like in the Buddhist teaching of dependent origination, the cause cannot be untied from its condition. Works of Elizabeth Jaeger are currently on view in Toronto at Daniel Faria Gallery as part of the group exhibition ‚And still no rain‘ on until August 27 2022.
“And still no rain explores themes related to language and loss; all the losses inherent in the moving and shifting of words, but also the experience of loss itself as something that occurs outside of language, forcing us to look for new tools to make sense of it.“

Keltie Ferris’ work is currently on view at BODE Projects, as part of the group exhibition ‘Summer of Possibilities’, on view until AUG 21, 2022.
“(...) Summer of Possibilities is an homage to that one summer in August when artists did not know. It combines emerging and established artists who represent the work of art-making and the importance of those historical breaks that exist in their practices. But it is also a statement about the process of art-making now. The practice of working and producing boundless possible opportunities within Abstraction which comes with the continuous dedication to the work. Regardless of how that work manifests, each piece is a collection of moments that mesh and intertwine; a puzzle piece of what is known and what isn’t that then produces possibilities within the limitless. The 12th Berlin Biennale ‘Still Present!’ is on view throughout the summer until SEP 18, 2022, so if you are in Berlin, stop by the Akademie der Künste at Hanseatenweg to see Sven Johne’s work ‘Heilpflanzen im Todesstreifen / Medicinal Plants in the Death Strip’ (2021).
“As diverse and varied as the worlds that comprise our current human reality are, they subsist amid the waste and cacophony that traverse global capitalism’s frantic and destructive race toward production. Since the onset of modernity, our planet has endured successive and ruinous changes that have accelerated alarmingly from the start of the third millennium. The place to which we have arrived today is not by chance: it is the result of historical formations constructed over centuries. In their egoism, modern Western societies have taken their own liberal character for granted, falsely assuming that the balance between free trade and universal suffrage guarantees a self-regulating system of universal democratic values. (...) Art offers a present that is protracted and, above all, free. Inherent to emotion, consciousness is movement in the present: as emotional, interpretive beings, we are totally unpredictable in the present, and this allows us to escape the technologies of capitalist behavioral manipulation and imperialist governance that colludes with it. So more than ever, we must remain present!”
- Excerpt from Kader Attia’s curatorial statement.

Currently on view at The Ringling ‘Metadata: Rethinking Photography from the 21st Century’ with works by Viktoria Binschtok.
“The term “metadata” is used to describe the information that travels with a digital image file but is unseen within the image itself. This data includes the details about the digital photograph’s creation, its ownership, and how it is situated within structures of order. In our networked digital environment, metadata is accessed by both human users and artificial intelligences. Software algorithms orchestrate what images we see and exchange while collecting the valuable data generated by our interactions. In our moment, dominated by image-based social media and surveillance, we are becoming increasingly aware that understanding the information that circulates unseen around photographic images is just as important as seeing what they depict on their surface. Metadata: Rethinking Photography from the 21st Century is an exhibition that explores new paradigms for understanding the ecology of the photographic image. (...)”

Thank you for joining us during the opening of Gwenneth Boelens’ solo exhibition ‘Full-bodied (hum)’, last Saturday 💓
The exhibition was realised in collaboration with curator Eloise Sweetman.
“(...) The title Full-bodied (hum) refers to a nourished, receptive body, one that might hum while making. The artworks create a happy thrum of activity, that purls, and glimmers across the gallery’s architecture. The word “Purl” refers to the interlocking of yarn, to go against the flow, and—in the most pleasing of ways—a small swirling stream2. Boelens’ practice has a purling motion and the artworks in Full-bodied (hum) are open vessels that sound and light move through.
Boelens’ practice has a cyclical flow: rest, preparation, making, and the inevitable release of the work into the world. And so begins the process again, while the trace of the previous work enters into the new cycle, nothing ends, but instead picked up and purls into new artworks, weaving works become contact c-prints; the mesh to make a chromogenic print becomes a large-scale textile wall sculpture; lengths of newspaper spears return as shields or shells, and leftover clay is soaked and kneaded into new vessels. She is building towards something, re-cycling, which returns us to cycling, swirling, to revisit anew. This brings to mind the lifecycle and the heartache that contemporary life can bring. With the current state of the world, Boelens’ work offers a place to rejuvenate and find some semblance of communal harmony. (...)" Taken from Eloise Sweetman's ‘a thyroid, a vessel, a neck, a drum’, written in the context of Full-bodied (hum) by Gwenneth Boelens.

Unlike most other species, birds have been gifted with a unique ability to respond through flight. They can transport themselves away from predators, physical barriers like rivers or mountains, grasping hands, running children and speeding cars. Like humans, they have the flexibility and mobility to choose where to build their homes and raise their children. These choices are so often not about achieving a more suitable home but desperately searching for remaining land that can sustain them. These habitats are quickly disappearing, while simultaneously urban dwellings less hospitable cities have developed into death mazes of inorganic material, disorienting electric lights, and reflective windows. - Elizabeth Jaeger @soxberlin @elizabethjaeger . on view from May 10 - June 21 Oranienstr. 175, 10999 Berlin . ———————— #elizabethjaeger #soxberlin #birds #oranienstrasse
