On the occasion of ‘New Positions’ at Art Cologne 2021, we are delighted to present Ulrich Gebert’s new group of works, ‘Eigenface’ 🤍🖤

“ (...) With Eigenface Ulrich Gebert explores a fairly new visual phenomenon that can
certainly be viewed critically: what used to be reserved for the privilege of intelligence service practice is increasingly determining our private as well as public, digital as well as analog space due to the ubiquitous spread of digital devices - facial recognition. (...) Eigenface unfolds in front of the matrix of the development of the photographic portrait from an image to a medium of inventory and archiving, makes critical use of its aesthetic patterns, operates on several levels of dissolution of boundaries against binary attributions, the distinction between human and non-human animals, intertwines the analog with the digital, the factual with the fictional, the made with the found. Technology is at the center of this. Energy generation, digitalisation, robotics, artificial intelligence. But technology is (still) human-made and thus prone to error. Catch Émilie Pitoiset presenting her work ‘Where Did Our Love Go?’ this Sunday NOV 14 | 3 pm at STUK in Leuven (BE)✨🖤

You can get your ticket via the link at our bio 🎫🔗

“During The Great Depression, dance competitions were organised across the US with cash prizes for dance couples who continued dancing beyond their total exhaustion. It was perceived as a great opportunity for people who had lost everything during the stock market crash of 1929. The public placed bets on who would last the longest. Judges ensured that rules were followed: those no longer in motion were disqualified. Sometimes judges added additional challenges, such as tying dance partners’ ankles together.

This peculiar phenomenon led Emilie Pitoiset to study the impact of a political, economic or social crisis on the movements of bodies. Where did our love go? is a choreography for two couples on the brink of collapse. In addition to this one-hour version, there is also a version that lasts no less than six hours.”

“For the 15th time since its first edition in 2007, STUK @stukleuven – House for Dance, Image & Sound and M Leuven @m.leuven join forces to host Playground, a live arts festival in Leuven, Belgium, from November 11–14, 2021. Playground remains a sanctuary for experimentation, in between the stage and contemporary art with artists that reflect on the world and the mediatization of life.”

Playground is curated by @eva.wittocx (M), Lore Boon

We are happy to present Emilija Škarnulytė’s work ‘Sirenomelia’ (2017) as part of the group exhibition ‘System Down? State of Affairs’, we are opening this Saturday NOV 6, 2021, from 6 to 9 pm! We are looking forward to seeing you ✨

“Set in far-northern territories where cold, Arctic waters meet rocky escarpments on which radio telescopes record fast-traveling quasar waves, Sirenomelia links man, nature and machine and posits possible post-human mythologies. It is shot in an abandoned Cold-War submarine base in Olavsvern, Norway, and is a cosmic portrait of one of mankind’s oldest mythic creatures - the mermaid. The artist, performing as a siren, swims through the decrepit NATO facility while cosmic signals and white noise traverse the entirety of space, reaching its farthest corners, beyond human impact.”

“(...) Not all is lost, however. A few have started to engage in a race. A race for survival. Some to stop the destruction of the host, others to ensure their survival in the destruction. Technology is at the center of this. Energy generation, digitalisation, robotics, artificial intelligence. But technology is (still) human-made and thus prone to error. And it creates new systems that subordinate humans. Where the software - the human - remains is hard to say. If you come by our booth F04 at Paris Photo, you will also find a selection of rare vintage works by Jan Groover ✨ "In the course of her artistic development, she eliminated the documentary elements from her photographic works little by little and challenged the limits of the medium, investigating the relationship between the elements of an image — the aesthetic effect of structure and form — instead. Everything became form. (...) Catch Émilie Pitoiset presenting her work ‘Where Did Our Love Go?’ this Sunday NOV 14 | 3 pm at STUK in Leuven (BE)✨🖤 You can get your ticket via the link at our bio 🎫🔗 “During The Great Depression, dance competitions were organised across the US with cash prizes for dance couples who continued dancing beyond their total exhaustion. In addition to this one-hour version, there is also a version that lasts no less than six hours.” - “For the 15th time since its first edition in 2007, STUK @stukleuven – House for Dance, Image & Sound and M Leuven @m.leuven join forces to host Playground, a live arts festival in Leuven, Belgium, from November 11–14, 2021. Playground remains a sanctuary for experimentation, in between the stage and contemporary art with artists that reflect on the world and the mediatization of life.” Playground is curated by @eva.wittocx (M), Lore Boon (M), and Steven Vandervelden (STUK) -- Distribution Artist Choreographer: Emilie Pitoiset @emiliepitoiset Performers: @keremgelebek, Maya Masse, Emilie Pitoiset, Martin Roehrich Music: Marc Marder Lights : Shantidas Riedacker @amortout Costumes : @paulinejacquard & Emilie Pitoiset Production: Compagnie KittyFisher Co-Production : CN D - Centre National de la Danse @le_cnd, CNAP - Centre National d’Art Plastique @cnapfr, Centre Pompidou, Festival Move @carofdo Photos © Hervé Véronèse, Centre Pompidou, 2019
“(...) In an obviously abandoned office space - a start-up company perhaps that has lost its financiers, another bank branch that has fallen victim to the controllers, or a government agency whose employees have fled to the home office - the selected works are shown on desk screens. Upon entering the room, everything is silent, all systems seem to be shut down. (...)” “System Down?
