With the exhibition Backbone, Mazen Khaddaj (Aley, Lebanon, 1985) remembers his father Melhem Khaddaj, who passed away in December 2020 after a long struggle with COVID-19. Through a series of live video performances and multi-channel videos (all from 2021), as well as sculptural and installation elements, Mazen Khaddaj interweaves mourning, love, as well as family ties, but also his q***r and his Lebanese Druze identity, with each other into an affective tour de force.

On view until October, 14th

Mazen Khaddaj ( @mazenkhaddajart ), born in 1985, is a multidisciplinary Lebanese artist working in painting, performance, video art, and installation. He received his BA in Graphic Design in Beirut in 2008. Khaddaj’s paintings are a play between textures and color, transparency and flatness. His work manifests human thought and interaction through figuration, which appears abstracted and dissipating, intersecting yet secluded. Subsequent video performances and installations are extensions of the work on canvas – what is inherent to still surfaces translates into mutable forms.

...The collective body in Speaking in Tongues, which is composed of the individual works in this exhibition, can be read as an artistic exploration of a Body without Organs. This imaginary body reveals itself without solidifying, constantly reshaping its contours. Through its permeable surface, it is able to meld with other bodies. Speaking in tongues, the language of its body comes into existence by speaking equally to the inside and to the outside.

Think! - An auditive online series starting from today

Listen to today‘s news from Garrett Nelson and Stephan Andreae

Link: https://blakeandvargas.com/think

About the series:
In the late ‘80s artist Hannah Weiner (1928-1996)
transcribed fragments of the daily news in a kind of
writing trance over the course of a year and
published them in new constellations in the
publication „Weeks“ (Xexoxial,1990).

What Charles Bernstein describes in its preface
equally hits today‘s situation at a sensitive point:
„The hours hang and the headlines punctuate
a passage through time that we move through,
head bowed at the collision of flesh and
indoctrination.“

What impact do news and headlines have –
especially if one needs to follow their directives.
How do you digest - or – what words, phrases
or expressives articulate themselves, once not
bound to the order of the rational?

We have invited various artists, authors and cultural producers to give free reigns over their thoughts and send us a contribution in form of an audio recording. The contributions will be published from May 8th on Blake & Vargas‘ Website.

A project by Franziska Glozer

On the estuary we found the black clay the same day we found the first berries. I made promises to myself. There was a dress that I had thought of as ‘blackberry dress’ and I kept it folded in a loose ball in a cupboard. I used this

At a similar time, I saw a wonderful thing. A bird flew low to a large mint metal flat roof. Its shadow followed it closely and suddenly dropped to the ground like a line of soot falling. This was spoken to a small empty shelf in a bedroom

Then it moved. On a walk alongside the estuary, I walked away from the tide coming in and heard lovely rhythms on a metal roof.

I remember when there is fabric involved. I remember the children on the sand, one’s pale blue coat with diamond patches lying across my legs. I remember vividly the arrangement made along an electricity line by someone I do not know but feel I see often. It must be her house. Clear short lines, or tubes line it, facing out into to the cool air in every direction. Sun, sun, light, lines, the lines stay in my head, the sun stays in the lines. I’ve waited for Winter to write.

Studio Last has designed three different posters for the exhibition. “Speaking in Tongues,” also called “Glossolalia,” refers to the act of speaking in an unknown language. With his vision of a new theater, the Theater of Cruelty, Antonin Artaud wanted to dissolve the boundaries between art and life, stage, and audience. Instead of classical narration and dialogue, he experimented with movements, sounds, and utterances in an imaginary language. His last work, the 1947 radio play To be done with the judgment of god, begins with “glossolalia,” and ends with the proclamation: “When you will have made him a body without organs, you will have freed him from all his automatic reactions and given him back his true freedom.” Torn by the dichotomy that the body is both body and mind, Artaud desires a body that is not defined by the needs and functions of its organs. In “A Thousand Plateaus” (Deleuze / Guattari, 1980), Gilles Deleuze asks the question, “How does one make a body without organs?” A body without organs creates and forms itself from the infinite possibilities of its virtual potential, independent of its organism. The body without organs operates in the free flow of its intensities, desires, and language. In exchange and intermingling with other bodies, it constantly renews itself. The collective body in “Speaking in Tongues,” composed of the individual works in this exhibition, can be read as an artistic exploration of a body without organs. This imaginary body reveals itself without solidifying, constantly reshaping its contours. Through its permeable surface, it is able to merge with other bodies. “Speaking in Tongues,” the language of his body emerges as he speaks equally inwardly and outwardly. When? On view from Friday, Jan 29th* AGNĖ JUODVALKYTĖ ANSKA Blake & Vargas This is Agnė Juodvalkytė’s first solo exhibition at Blake & Vargas. The exhibition consists of large-scale paintings and intimate pieces the artist created during the past 8 months. The title of the show, ANSKA, a Lithuanian term of endearment referring to the artist's grandmother, sets and defines the symbolic space of the exhibition that is centered around the complex nature of memory and the imaginary act of remembering. All canvases shown are the result of a slow process of color layering. Juodvalkytė’s use of color resembles an alchemical examination of the material’s different states of matter: paint made of plants, natural pigments, graphic dust - from raw to fluid - are applied on the canvas in bold gestures. Combined, they result in multi-layered abstract landscapes that invite the viewer to immerse themselves, yet refuse any concrete reading. On view: January, 29th* – February, 26th, by appointment only.

*Until the end of the lockdown, the exhibition can be viewed through the gallery window.

Familiar faces, anonymous portraits, abandoned landscapes, animals and urban spaces—EVERYTHING SO DEMOCRATIC AND COOL designed by Matthias Last’s Studio Last sketches an associative collage of our collective present. The images selected for the retrospective of Christian Werner’s photographic work are drawn from various series and contexts: shots from fashion shoots, commissions for magazines and private portraits, as well as personal projects. They reveal the variety of Werner’s work, and the vision of a gaze that is at once intimate and reserved. “In Christian Werner’s photography, the subject is always simultaneously in both the present moment and the past. They tell us about a turning point in our civilization. Space, time, youth, natural resources; everything seems to abound in these pictures. However Christian Werner’s special visual language already anticipates the end; his photographs are also always looking backwards.” – Felix Stephan, Süddeutsche Zeitung “Christian Werner's pictures always have attitude. A mixture of nonchalance, serendipity and attentiveness.” – Ijoma Mangold, Die ZEIT “Behind each of his photographs is a clear, sharp idea. They are among the most exciting that contemporary German photography has to offer. His new book EVERYTHING SO DEMOCRATIC AND COOL shows that Christian Werner has mastered the almost impossible trio of rigour, humor, and poetry.” – Adriano Sack, Welt am Sonntag “Christian Werner’s art always strikes an aesthetic nerve. His latest photo book shows a piece of sensitive pop-cultural history.” – Silke Hohmann, Monopol “You almost have the impression that you’re holding a personal photo album. One that represents the span of the last decade.” – Kevin Hanschke, Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung “The feeling that Christian Werner captures in his photography is something that has not yet been adequately defined—a feeling without a name, whose magical attraction draws the viewer all the more into its spell.” – Hanno Hauenstein, Berliner Zeitung Christian Werner lives and works in Berlin.
