REPLIKA Is a three dimensional magazine bringing together artists from all spheres to explore a unified concept. With each issue, artists, writers, musicians and creators of all descriptions are invited to explore a given theme, and to respond with an object-based, serialised work. we want to provide artists with a platform which is indiscriminate when it comes to place, gender, career and is able to focus purely on conceptual engagement. even though the internet has quickly become a very useful tool for artists to share their work and ideas, we felt it necessary to bring art back into a three-dimensional realm. influenced by mail art, the Fluxus movement and DIY art books and Zines, REPLIKA aims to become a highly aesthetic collectable item which explores a wide variety of themes and concepts throughout each of it's issues. Each Issue will consist of ten Boxes in lieu of a book. each box containing Ten works by Ten different artists. as each piece is replicated manually, each of the 10 boxes vary slightly and are a unique collectable. the box is accompanied by a catalogue in which each work is photographed and itemised along with further text from the artists, the curators and further submitters. The catalogue is also able to stand alone and will sold separately at our exhibition and online. Both the edition and the catalogue are self published and handmade. in our first issue, the theme explored is: ECHO ECHO A close parallel to an idea, feeling, or event. The repetition in structure and content of one speaker’s utterance by another. The deliberate introduction of reverberation into a sound recording. A sound or sounds caused by the reflection of sound waves from a surface back to the listener. A reflected radio or radar beam. A characteristic that is suggestive of something else. A person who slavishly repeats the words or opinions of another. A result of imitation. Throughout the works, motifs recur. Such as the mirror and refections, Traces of past lives, shifts between cyber space and actual existence, and the lover who torments without requital. OPEN CALL to our second Issue: Ellipse Ellipse: In relation to a life cycle or imperfect loop. Circularity, rotundity, cycle, ring, areola, roundlet, annulus, bracelet, armilla, ringlet, eye, loop, wheel, orb, orbit, belt, cordon, sash, girdle, cestus, cincture, baldric, fillet, fascia, wreath, garland, crown, corona, coronet, chaplet, necklace, collar, noose, lariat, ellipse, oval, ovule, ellipseoid, cycloid, Semicircle, sector, Egg-shaped, Pear-shaped, sphere. Artists may respond in any media as long as the work result is object based. This includes print, painting, photography, performance documentation, video, drawing, writing, sound, sculpture, found object etc. Applicants should complete and return the submission form along with any images or diagrams of proposed works. Each work must be reproduced in an edition of ten. Slight variations due to reproduction processes are encouraged. Each work is to be no greater than 20cmx26cmx5cm. Application deadline is SEPTEMBER 10, 2016. You can download the application form here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B5D-GiDh8MqqZHVyMUtieFdhT1k

We are excited to announce a new project from photographer Ilja Niederkirchner @iljaniederkirchner , ‘Greek Dog Days’ and we are extending an open call to writers to submit a text to be published alongside the artist's photographic work.

In 2014, following the financial crisis that crippled the Greek Economy, Ilja Niederkirchner travelled to the two cities of Thessaloniki and Athens at the invitation of a friend. During his time there, Niederkirchner engaged in introspective walks throughout both cities and observed the effects of this economic breakdown. What he found was a dystopian landscape of abandoned homes, shops, gas stations, car dealerships and construction sites - places that were once the columns of capitalism were now relics of the cities past.
Where financial wealth and prosperity was once promised, stray dogs now roam and have taken ownership.

"Someone once said that it is easier to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of capitalism."
Fredric R. Jameson

There is a suggestion that there is no alternative to capitalism, other than to signal a failure of our way of life. There is an idea that without a full proof or detailed plan, an execution or concept of a different system cannot exist. It is our ideas, collective thought and sharing of knowledge that will allow these plans to form and take shape into a feasible new way of living. A world beyond capitalism may seem foggy and uncertain, but a mystery will always remain a mystery if we do not pursue knowledge and understanding of the unknown.

We are asking writers to create a text that explores these ideas of imagination, of unlocking the truths of these structures and the mysteries of what may lie ahead without them. You will have the scope to approach the text from any angle you choose, the text may be in the form of an essay, fiction or thought and opinion based. The brief is open to individual interpretation and we invite you to explore this project with an open mind.

‘We’re never really in control, but that doesn’t mean we can’t decide to embrace the little things, have faith enough to plant seeds for tomorrow, and look for all the ways life continues to blossom in the cracks.’

This beautiful book from Chloe Ferres @chloeferres demonstrates the resilience and beauty of things found outside the realm of acceptance and our idea of correct placement. Ectopic Plants is an exploration of natural life in seemingly inhospitable places, it brings attention to the parallel of women who have experienced ectopic pregnancies the world over. Through her work, Chloe aims to shed light on the inequalities of healthcare for women globally.

‘Approximately 1% of pregnancies are ectopic – out of place.
Ectopic pregnancy is the leading cause of maternal death in early pregnancy. The maternal mortality rate is around ten times higher in the developing world.
Nothing can be done to save ectopic pregnancies.‘

In Ecptopic Plants, Chloe brings a beauty and a connection to the displaced, a reminder to think outside ourselves and our privilege, especially if we are in a position to have the time to reflect and, perhaps, to enact change.

Chloe did an interview about this project recently with The Planthunter if you would like to read further about this work.

Apokryphos - Cherine Fahd @cherinefahd - published by M.33 @m.33_melbourne

Apokryphos features 24 found photographs of Fahd’s grandfather’s funeral in 1975, captured by an unknown family friend.
The book reuses the structure of historical writing in reference to photography but notes the importance of memory, imagining and feeling as opposed to historical fact.

In Apokryphos, Fahd allows us an intimate look through the lens at the type of grief that is usually reserved for first hand experience.
Moving through these pages, we feel a responsibility to respect our invitation to view and observe this trauma without becoming a tourist of it.

“These photographs hint at what it must have been like to be lebanese and living in Sydney in the 70s. Who are they who wail and flail? What is this gothic theatre; What is this theatrical performance; who are these dark skinned, dark haired people? Why do they all wear black? The shame in over-expression, the shame in showing grief, the shame in losing control of one’s emotions, the shame of throwing oneself onto the coffin. The shame of screaming and crying. The shame of migrants”

Looking at these pictures and the accompanying texts you can feel the othering of transplanted grief, from old to new world, this glimpse giving us some small piece of understanding and empathy for these people we have never known.

One more title we picked up at MABF is An Error Has Occurred - Rohan Hutchinson @Rohanhutchinson - Published by Perimeter Editions @perimeterbooks

After following Rohan’s work online for perhaps two years, it was a real pleasure to finally meet him and have the opportunity to talk through his hand bound books in person.
(handcrafted micro publishing __> perimeter)
One book in particular caught our attention this year at the Melbourne Art Book Fair, An Error Has Occurred, published by Perimeter Books, it is an exceptional example of the beautiful paper stocks, handcrafted and hand bound books we admire from Rohan.

An error has occurred explores the effects of climate change as a global issue, that our actions are all intrinsically linked in the impact of climate change worldwide. From Australia to the Arctic, Rohan travelled to Svalbard to photograph the untouched landscapes of the Arctic, these make up the first picture in each of these sets. The second print depicts the image after it has been re-sensitized by a photographic emulsion and exposed to the Australian Sun; the product shows a blackened erasure of the original landscape and intends to show us the irreparable affects one part of our world can have on another.

At the beginning of last month, we had the great pleasure of attending the 2020 Melbourne Art Book Fair where we picked up a few great titles, now we’ve had some time to have a closer look at them and we wanted to share some of the titles with you

DAVID - a retrospective documentation of a year-long programme of exhibitions facilitated by David Mutch @david_mutch_o and Andrew Read @topboy_2020.

David Mutch wins the top prize as best book fair neighbour, giving us the inside scoop on everything at the @ngvmelbourne This publication unassumingly documents each of the twelve exhibitions hosted in their studio space over the course of one year. The quality of the presentation, documentation and works themselves allow this publication to function as an active archive of the local artist community fostered by David and Andrew. David’s attitude towards this publication was perhaps the most remarkable, that it should service the artists involved and provide many of them with the first instance of high quality reproduction of their work. The publication is unbound and each page folds out to an A3 full colour poster.

As some of you might remember, Replika, just three weeks ago, was heading to the Melbourne Art Book Fair. Many things have changed since then…. So to give a quick update, Replika is now divided and (attempting to) function from two different time zones, 12 hours apart.
You can still get in touch with us! We've loved hearing from those who we have met at fairs, seeing how you display and use your Replika publications in your home during lock down wherever you may be. To keep things on a positive note, this whole situation has simply forced all of us to think about the things we need, physically as well as culturally, and new ways of accessing those things and communities.
Here you will see some of the titles still stuck over in the southern hemisphere on Lock down in New Zealand.
Replika has always maintained the importance of experiencing books, particularly art books, in the flesh and have therefore refrained from posting a lot of the contents of our books online and we have always looked for ways to make our books freely accessible through donations to libraries or collections, but as a part of the virtual #laabf2020online we’re finally posting some sneak peeks into a few of our titles.
All books and more are available on our online shop link in bio 💕

Replika Publishing

Based in Berlin since 2015, Replika Publishing is a small independent publishing house producing work under two main branches; Replika Volumes and replika artist books.

Replika Volumes is a self-published, three dimensional, curated artist periodical featuring the works of ten international artists and an artist catalogue which expands upon the edition with a further 30 contributors. With each issue, artists, writers, musicians and creators of all descriptions are invited to explore a given theme, and to respond with an object-based, serialised work. Influences by Fluxus, we intend to explore new methods of exhibition through printed matter and book arts.

Replika also works closely with selected artists to produce artist books in small runs. recent titles include Footfalls Echo from Award winning photographer Freya Copeland.
