“During the 10th and 11th centuries in the Leifsdóttir’s native Iceland, Pagan mysticism that spread power across the genders was disrupted with the arrival of Christianity, whose patriarchal norms came with an associated diminishment of female power. Silvia Frederici notes in her book Caliban and the Witch, a similar shift as patriarchal capitalism took hold of society witch hunts. “It was women who most strongly defended the old mode of existence and opposed the new power structure, plausibly because they were also the ones who were most negatively affected by it.”

The text-based works in the show circled around the histories of these women – the official and the unofficial – using media, history, literature and psychoanalysis. Happy to share “Playing Social Reality”, my recent interview with Laxlan Petras @ppeettrraass in the current issue of @thisisbadland mag. I traveled to Athens to do it, hanging out at @hyle.gr, a project space by @georgiasagri, and in-direct presence that influenced our attempts at self reflection, e.g.

DO YOU THINK SAGRI’S WORK IS A CITATION FOR YOU?

Like many, I’ve known Sagri’s work for some years, because I was taken by her gestures and ideas, and how her performance communicate with a public. And the role of the artist, for example, is not some totalising notion of art to be seperate from society, but rather deals with social reality - I find this very inspiring. I think about how generations of people become defined; how a political generation is formed; and how these events come to define longer periods of change that systematically cause the event and cause the rupture of social representation that is needed. Many of Sagri’s performances present us with ways in which the body communicates these ruptures, it’s not a cognitive search for meaning, but intervals of time to be experienced viscerally. 🌋
