: It’s important to know WHAT kind of opportunity/contract you are auditioning for in Germany BEFORE you arrive at your auditions (vorsingen). Auditions are either for the following…
1. A fixed (fest) contract that is for a full-time ensemble or studio position where you will be employed for multiple roles in various styles. Therefore, VERSATILITY is important.
2. A guest (gast) singer contract, usually for one specific role. Therefore, SPECIFICITY is important (bring the arias from the role you are auditioning for…)
3. General (get-to-know-you) auditions. These types of auditions happen less frequently, especially if you work with a good agent who should be aiming to get you auditions for a SPECIFIC purpose. However if you do any general auditions, you’ll want to bring your best 4-5 arias that represent your primary repertoire, that show your best qualities.

This is why it is imperative to have a GOOD AGENT when auditioning, so that they can attain all the specific information about what job opportunities are available, BEFORE you plan your audition.
