Solace23

Solace23 Solace23 is both an idea and a practice. It offers support to people working with visual narratives; advising at various stages of the development of an idea through to the final film or artwork.

First Script Circle in 2021: It’s a little lonelier than usual, but we’re very pleased to meet with filmmakers spread across the world again. In February from Amsterdam, Beirut, Copenhagen, Sofia and Zagreb. Thank you for joining us. We still wish we could be in the room together and with each Script Circle our longing grows evermore, but we are also relieved that it IS possible to connect and communicate across our screens.

In this spirit, here the next dates: Script Circle 39 will take place from April 15-17th. If you would like to attend, please get in touch by March 19th [email protected]

Script Circle 10-12th Feb online

Dear friends,
We’ve been less communicative than we planned to be over the last year. Our plans to share reflections on development and dramaturgy, and other insights into our work, were temporarily put on hold, as the challenges of the last year faced by all, in different ways and intensities, led to a bit of radio silence on our part.

Script Circle also suffered and didn’t take place as often as we would have liked, as other workshop obligations took more of our time last year. This year we will be able to dedicate more time to Solace23. You won’t find us at TFL any more, but you will here. Script Circle will take place again in February, though online and not alongside the Berlinale.

Script Circle 10-12th Feb online- please get in touch by Jan 22

We will also begin a longer form workshop experiment later in the year, aimed at filmmakers and visual artists who are committed to a continued exploration of cinema and the idea that cinema can do more than tell stories, like other art forms may attempt to express the inexpressible. We remain as committed as ever to this and look forward to greeting you at some point in this ongoing journey.

Sorry about the recent radio silence. There will be more news, particularly on our plans for 2021, including the first Script Circle dates as well as a more longterm group development workshop to run parallel to Script Circle and in association with Six Days of Practice. See you!

Script Workshop | Galichnik Film Festival

It's already been a few weeks ago, but we are happy to share this kind and generous appreciation of our work. Thanks a lot to the participating filmmakers, and the organizers at Galichnik Film Festival for entrusting us with this and we hope next time we can continue without the "digital distancing".

"I've been working on the screenplay of "The Sweet Bitterness of the Ripe Pomegranates" for a couple of years now and I really needed to see it "mirrored" - as tutors Franz and Francoise put it, into their eyes and those of the other participants. This has really helped me to step back and see what....

And here we are again, with the extended Aamu Film Company family. We love working and hanging out with you. To many more!

Three days, three scripts, and a feeling we are all happily in Berlin from the safety of our homes. Thank you Francoise von Roy and Franz Rodenkirchen for yet another wonderful script circle!

As many of you are writing, or trying to write, we'd like to share a short text with you: What is Development? Some thoughts about what we mean when we speak of development for the screen.
It was intended as a longer piece, but we thought it might be of use to some of you now.

The last innocent Script Circle at the end of the Berlinale, brought filmmakers from Bosnia, Czech Republic, Italy, Romania, Switzerland and the UK all together around one table. It’s going to be a while before we can do this again, in the meantime, we hope you are all keeping healthy, safe and as calm as is possible.

All planned Script Circles are on hold for the time being. In the meantime, we have been considering how we can stay in touch with you in other ways and are considering recording a little talk about the things we often talk about with each other and with our workshop groups. For us it will also be a warm-up to move back into the “ongoing book project”, with the working title A Farewell to Certainties. Strange how fitting the title has now become.

We might start with a talk about the alleged truisms of dramaturgy, where do they come from, why are they so ubiquitous, what consequences do they have when misapplied, and so on. Let us know if there’s anything related to development, writing for the screen, you’d like us to talk about. We know many of you out there have had to interrupt shoots or had your productions cancelled or postponed indefinitely and many of you are writing or trying to get back into writing. We are thinking of you.

The old year passed, the new year began and we have yet to post from the last Script Circle in 2019 and the first of 2020.
Here some impressions of these two workshops that were once again challenging, familiar, illuminating and, as ever, never boring. Thank you to all the participants who embark on these three day journeys with us into storytelling, cinema and self.

The next chances to join in are Feb 27-29 and April 22-24. If you are interested in either please get in touch as soon as possible [email protected]

November 13-15, Script Circle without a Project

Development is an ongoing process. We think and talk a lot about this, how best to support writers and filmmakers in this ongoing process of development of screenplays for films. Script Circle is a support for filmmakers at different stages in development of their screenplays or treatments, but also a possibility for those of us who work with writers and filmmakers during this process, to gain new insights into this practice.

If you are curious about learning more about how to support writers and filmmakers in this process, join us for the November’s Script Circle. We still have open spots for participants without a project.

Some weeks have passed since the last workshop that brought together Dutch, Italian, Australian and Czech filmmakers here in Berlin. We ended the last night in the bar downstairs and though it was hard to part, we’re certain we will see each of you again at some point. For those of you who have yet to join us, the next opportunity is November 13-15. There’s only one spot left for a participant with a project, but several for participants without projects. Drop us a line if you would like to come.

With the Finnish Aamu family here one week and our usual kaleidoscopic mix of newcomers and regulars from all over (this time Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, India, Iran and the US) the next Script Circle has sprung further into spring. When we look back it’s sometimes tremendous to think how our shared talks move us through time & space in just three days: from a small shared apartment in India - steeped in longing, to an unspecified nature reserve mutating unsettlingly in the not so distant future, to a remote village shining a light on the injustices of yesterday permeating into today and finally, with chemists and clubbers on a very special kind of moon trip, one that could make us feel both nostalgic and hopeful. We remain hopeful, we remain committed, to film and art allowing exploration and communication of thoughts, feelings, ideas from many voices, from many places.

Spring Script Circle, birds twittering, leaves unfurling outside, while inside heads were smoking over explorations of responsibility and control, isolation and connection, in four very different treatments with five Script Circle first timers. There’s always a first time. The next possible first time (or second, third, fourth or fifth?) is May, 23-25th. This will be the last workshop before the summer break, deadline for application is April 25.

Writing and development, the lonely tasks that sometimes need to be shared. Last weekend we held the 30th Berlin Script Circle since this little experiment began in 2014. It was a fitting gathering of people, a mixture of returnees and new recruits and new countries to add to the ever expanding list: Montenegro, Singapore and Thailand. Now, there have been over 150 participants from 40 countries and we are grateful that we continue to reach people from all corners of the world, sit at one table and try to discover together what lies at the core of works in progress.

As some of you may know, we planned Script Circle as a bimonthly workshop, you may also know we don’t like following rules – it appears not even our own – as we held the first 2019 Script Circle in January, the second in Feb and will now hold another in March.

Unfortunately, much as we’d like to, we can’t continue in this vein, so there will not be a workshop in April, but instead another in May. If you are interested in taking part, please get in touch
