Ankoku Butoh (暗黒舞踏, ankoku butō) is a post-war Japanese dance movement that has achieved worldwide recognition. Literally meaning “dance of utter darkness” and commonly known as just Butoh. One of the first female butoh dancers Natsu Nakajima was born in 1943 in Sakhalin, which was occupied by Japan at the time. Sakhalin (Russian: Сахали́н, Sakhalín, Japanese: 樺太 Karafuto) is the northernmost island of the Japanese archipelago and nowadays the largest island of the Russian Federation. It was home to indigenous people including the Ainu. Most Ainu on Sakhalin moved to Hokkaido, 43 kilometres south, when the Japanese were displaced from the island in 1949. Master Natsu Nakajima invited to a lecture about the origins of Butoh on September 11th 2016 at TATWERK.

Gender identity is a labyrinth of expectations... The performance Loser by Karolin Stächele, danced by Marta Capaccioli (IT) and Yannis Karalis (GR) worked on the human feeling of being part of something. How can we free ourselves from social oppressions? There always seems to be conflict between self-realization and belonging. Or maybe both is possible?

When we look at something that we at first dislike, what does it take to start loving it?
How strong is the tension between phobia and affection?
Monster Mechanism was a work in progress collaboration between Sherwood Chen (US/FR) and Yuko Kaseki (JP/DE), shown in Paris, Berlin and New York City in 2016 and 2017.
The rehearsals and the premiere took place at TATWERK.
