ARCHIVE & PRACTICE
In the work area Archive and Practice (formerly Mime Centrum Berlin), the International Theatre Institute works at the intersection of artistic, archival and cultural-political negotiation of the intangible cultural heritage of the performing arts. The rehearsal and research space Studio2 and the Media library for Dance and Theater, the ITI's documentation center for the perform

ing arts, function as parts of this workspace. STUDIO 2
STUDIO2 is a 160 square metre rehearsal and workshop space for the performing arts in Berlin's Kunstquartier Bethanien. The studio offers especially emerging artists the opportunity to try out and research in rehearsals, workshops and work demonstrations. In addition to hourly use, use over several days is also possible for longer research phases. By combining artistic research and practice, Studio2 offers the opportunity to consider and discuss theatre-practical approaches in the context of theatre-theoretical, technological, and archival practice. In courses and laboratories, intensive engagement with specific themes and methodological approaches to movement in dance and theater is possible. These formats are open to beginners as well as professional actors:

MEDIA LIBRARY FOR DANCE AND THEATRE
The Media library for Dance and Theatre is a place for artistic and scientific research and discussion for actors in the performing arts. It acts as a place of lively exchange on artistic, cultural-political and technological developments in dance and theatre. Especially in connection with the rehearsal location Studio2, it offers the unique possibility to consider and discuss art-practical approaches in connection with art-theoretical, technological and archival-practical examination. Continuously, the ITI's media studio, as part of the media library, also realizes its own filmic documentations of dance and theatre productions. The digitization and preservation of audiovisual as well as supplementary documents are an important area of work. The content-related and critical reappraisal of the media library's holdings together with artists and scholars is an important concern. Detailed descriptions and thematically organized presentations provide profound insights into artistic and cultural developments in the performing arts.

Looking back at our Annotatathon in collaboration with .bank ✨

At the end of the year, we’re taking a moment to reflect on a shared space of exchange and experimentation with video annotation last September. The interdisciplinary format opened up exciting conversations and showed how Motion Bank Systems can be of use across different backgrounds and practices.

Thank you to everyone who joined, contributed, and stayed curious!

Exciting things are coming up next year, stay tuned 💫

✨ We warmly invite you to a little gathering on 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟭 at STUDIO2, where the ITI Academy LAB II residents will generously share some of their findings, stories and practices through text, sound and other materials. ✨

When Alex D. Loo and her drum ensembles Bomba Cuir and Yemayá organise artistic interventions for women’s and LGBTQI+ rights in public spaces in Arequipa and Lima (Peru), they face violence and the threat of arrest. However, collective, joyful, and defiant music and dance allow them to stand up to state and social violence. On the other side of the globe, in Kampala (Uganda), q***r people risk their lives if they dare to freely exist in society. Gerald Odil Ronnie and their q***r artist collective, Anti-Mass, have created underground refuges of joy, love, and ecstasy in response to oppression and hatred.

To mark Pride Month, we’re celebrating the work of a legendary q***r icon Vaginal Davis who defies definition. She’s done it all: performance, zines, visual art, experimental film, drag, activism, and cultural critique-all with radical style and sharp wit.

🎥 Visit us at the Media Library for Dance and Theatre to explore several available video documentations of her performances.

𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘅𝗶𝗹𝗲

What are the contours of a dance archive that exists in exile—geographically, politically, and epistemologically? What does it mean to document movement when the body itself is subject to displacement, surveillance, or erasure?

The weblog “Dance Archive in Exile” (https://darchivexile.hypotheses.org/) is a space for thinking through these questions—provisionally, critically, and collaboratively. It forms part of a broader inquiry into the precarious conditions under which dance practices are lived, remembered, and transmitted outside of institutional frameworks.

In a first stage, this project engages with dancers based in Iran and Europe, particularly in German-speaking countries, to explore the role of documentation and archiving for them. Through interviews led by the dance scholar Elaheh Hatami, artists discuss their artistic practices, the challenges they face, and their perspectives on creating a dance archive.

The initiative is being developed in collaboration with the Media Library for Dance and Theatre of the German Centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI). It is supported by the ITI on a long-term basis.
