Texti: Christian Schoen (Insel, 2008)

His paintings are expressive, visually overwhelming, modeled with vibrating colors and telling phantastic stories. They are often mixing the visual language of comics, with the formal abstraction of Van Gogh and the composition of old masters like Rubens. In fact Ómar Stefánsson, who studied art at the Academies of Reykjavík and Berlin (West), has a wide range of artistic expression. He on the one hand side published comics called “Bandormur” (tapeworm) in the 1980s. On the other hand he was - together with among others Finnbogi Pétursson and Björn Roth - a member of the performance group Bruni bb, which shocked the post modern Icelandic society.
Ómar Stefánsson was also participating in the famous performative Rock-Band “inferno5” (together with Óskar Thorarensen, Þorri Jóhannsson, Örn Ingólfsson, Eggert Ketilsson).
Ómar Stefánsson cooperated for different kind of projects with Dieter and Björn Roth. In Dieter Roth Verlag for example he published a book called “Hazard Zone” (1984) together with Björn. In the same year he participated in the Orgien Mysterien Theater of the Austrian Hermann Nitsch. With Nitsch – who was teaching in Iceland at that time – he performed in a huge music-action which was recorded and published in a 6-record-box by Dieter Roth and was called the “Islandsymphonie” (Iceland Symphony). But then he was painting as well for the ballroom in the famous Hotel Borg in the Center of Reykjavík the ceiling of the ballroom in a semi-baroque manner. He worked with the artists Bjarni Þórarinsson and Goddur on a huge project on a graphic series called “Cosmosis”.

Ómar Stefánsson’s work, his phantasy and variety is very impressing. He probably is one of the most unique artists of – at least – Iceland.

Ómar Stefánsson was born in 1960 and graduated from the School of Arts and Crafts in 1981 and as a Master of Painting from Professor Fussmann at the Hochschule der Kunste in West Berlin. He has collaborated with Magnús Pálsson, Dieter Roth, André Thomkin, Dominik Steiger and been in art circles with Dorothy Iannone, Jan Voss and Einar Guðmundsson Litla-Skáldi. Omar has also exhibited his work with artists Joseph Boyce, Dieter Roth, Hermann Nitch, Cy Twombly and Robert Filiou. Works by him are owned by the National Gallery of Iceland, the Reykjavík Art Museum, the Living Art Museum and the Heine Onstadt Museum in Oslo, Norway. His work is also privately owned across Europe, for example by private collectors in the Netherlands and the Illuminati in Switzerland. Text: Christian Schoen (Island, 2008)

Flat Theatre for an Uneven Revolution
@ ForA - Contemporary Art Platform
Marburger Strasse 3, Berlin
12. - 30. march 2022

Ómar Stefánsson opens the exhibition "Flat theatre for an uneven revolution" at ForA Gallery, Marburger Strasse3 in Berlin on March the 12th, 19-22. The exhibition will feature works the artist created during the pandemic. Paintings, sculptures, diaries and drawings, and the content is reflected in the title of the exhibition.

The exhibition leads us through the poetic and grotesque satire of human beings who live and die. A cloud-enclosed vault controls floods and tides, while the human being belongs to gravity along with other bottom creatures that it reflects on, in its daily activities.

The architecture of words and ideas speaks to the tangible structure of buildings in Ómar's paintings, which are both formal and surreal. Forms take on a vivid structure, that seems to be able to move and rearrange at any given moment. Man grows into himself, out of himself, becomes a house, becomes an animal and swings in the world, on the playground of existence. We seem to live in a ready-made world where nothing is accidental.

The same cannot be said about the drawing in Ómar's paintings, which appear to man as a wild and untamed phenomenon. Powerful and confident strokes draw a world that unites all the art movements of the 20th century, even further back. The violent and unrestrained subject matter has an obvious connection to the works of artists as diverse as Otto Dix, Hiernonymous Bosch and Hans Bellmer.

The Flat Theatre is a picture of the world in times of unequal revolution, where not everything is as it seems.

Ómar Stefánsson started keeping diaries in German when he returned to Berlin in 2017. FLAT THEATRE FOR AN UNEVEN REVOLUTION shows samples from 30 books that he finished in the years 2017-2022. In those diaries he describes his daily events, reflections, ideas and destiny during his stormy years in Berlin, which ended with physical death at the Charité Hospital and resuscitation through rebirth in the zodiac sign of Scorpio in November 2021. Pages also depict drawings and collages that illustrate the five-dimensional reality of the artist in two-dimensional form, similar to when a three-dimensional landscape is projected onto a surface.

Ómar Stefánsson has been considered one of Iceland's foremost painters and is also notorious for his controversial performance work, created in collaboration with the infamous art brut groups Bruni BB and Inferno 5. He was born in Iceland in 1960 and graduated in 1981 from the Experimental Art Department in Reykjavík, Iceland. He traveled with Hermann Nitsch around Europe during his studies as a participant in Nitsch’s performances. Ómar Stefánsson also studied painting in Berlin with Professor Klaus Fussman at the Hochscule der kunste, from where he graduated as a Meisterschuler in 1987. Ómar Stefánsson has exhibited his work alongside artists such as Cy Twombly, Joseph Beuys at the Gallery Händschin í Basel, Sviss. The National Icelandic Art Museum and The Reykjavík Art Museum have bought his work as well as the Technical Academy of Iceland, private collectors and companies. He created an on site work for the train station in Basel, Switzerland with artists Dieter Roth, Dominik Steiger and André Thomkins.
