HilbertRaum

HilbertRaum HilbertRaum is a Project Space for Contemporary Art in Berlin-Neukölln. HilbertRaum is a non-commercial, self-financed, artist-run project space.

It opened in January 2015 in the middle of Reuterkiez in Berlin-Neukölln. Behind HilbertRaum is a group of 17 Berlin-based artists, who take turns curating and organizing two-week shows running over the entire year. HilbertRaum is named after the infinitely dimensioned Hilbert space, a concept developed by the mathematician David Hilbert. To us, it represents an open, undetermined and evolving str

ucture of self-organization with the expectation of the unexpected.
Veronica Brovall (born 1975, Sweden) is a sculptor living and working in Berlin since 2003. She has years of experience teaching art processes, sculpture, and mentorship. Throughout her artistic practice Brovall turns delicate ceramic sculptures into raw physical anthropomorphic artworks that straddle the fine line between contested notions of femininity and masculinity, life and death, fragility and strength, violence and beauty, materiality, and allegory. Veronica Brovall is at the forefront of a new generation of female sculptors questioning conventional notions of womanhood, while striving to reinvent and reshape the century old medium of ceramics in a contemporary context. Her passion is self-development, and she has a thirst for expansion and curiosity, which has led her to a wide range of sources and systems.

This exhibition combines her sculptures made in the last eight years and new works made this autumn over an eight day period.

In an attempt to translate text into images, small prints depict objects named by each of the correspondents, the collection becomes visual constellations that orbit around foggy letters. The exhibition explores the multiple interpretations hidden behind a translation: text becoming image, and becoming narrative again.

In this opportunity, in addition to the prints, an embroidered tablecloth features a secret-coded message, and a collective performance around the words and the language from the letters, disentangling the notion of individual authorship and voicing the past into the present.

When Words Fail brings together a group of artists whose works explore what happens when the ordinary functioning of language starts to break down. Through a range of strategies – blacking-out words and effacing meanings in newspaper articles, composing strange and nonsensical songs about wooden trees, using facial gestures to enact specific emotions according to instructions in a Brazilian television actor’s manual, relaying suggestively indeterminate messages about intercultural relationships through public signage, improvising a five-hour sequence of scenes based on every word in the dictionary beginning with E, and getting an avatar to expound (via sign language) on the story of a gorilla that used sign language to persuade world leaders to act on climate change – all of the works in the exhibition highlight the less-than-straightforward relationship between language and meaning, and between words and the things they stand in for.

SPOTLIGHTS #6
Juliane Henrich
Sunday 03 Sep 2023, 2-10 pm
Screening + Q&A: 7 pm

Juliane Henrich: WELT ALS DRAHT, 2022, 6 min
"Welt als Draht (World as Wire)" raises question around mining and data: Is slag as a residue from copper smelting comparable to the initially "useless" data that is left behind on servers when surfing the net? Thinking about the accumulation of digital data, the “Behavourial Surplus” that Shoshana Zuboff coined and about copper as a raw material for wiring leads into the private chamber of a fictitious user who is influenced by data and at the same time produces new traces for exploitation. "Welt als Draht" speculates about connections that spread through the network - from revolutionary ideas to inhuman conspiracy theories.

SPOTLIGHTS #5
Teboho Edkins
Saturday 02 Sep 2023, 6-10 pm
Screening + Q&A: 7 pm

Teboho Edkins: SHEPHERDS, 2020, 27 min
Shepherds demonstrates how cattle are constitutive for the entirety of social life in Lesotho, a small state in the middle of South Africa. Cows have deep symbolic as well as material significance and their possessions are therefore of extremely high value. The film was shot in a prison where cattle thieves are imprisoned. They talk about their lives and why they came here. For every cow stolen, they face one year in prison.

SPOTLIGHTS #4
Lilli Kuschel
Friday 01 Sep 2023, 6-10 pm
Artist Talk: 7 pm

Lilli Kuschel: VISITING SENECA, 2023, 40 min
Visiting Seneca is an observation of the act of making a movie: Robert Schwentke‘s Seneca starring John Malkovich was shot in the heat and the wind of the Moroccon desert. Visiting Seneca examines the processes of filmmaking itself, revealing the hyperconcentrated, challenging and absurd reality on set.

J.I. (Jellyfish Intelligence) is an Eco Science Fiction film by John Butler and Lina Theodorou. Set in the Mediterranean, it posits a world destabilized by the advent of biological immortality, a gift of life from a mysterious new species. Part solutionist satire, part transhumanist tragedy, it features fictionalized versions of Buckminster Fuller, Rachel Carson and Ray Kurzweil.

“The start point was the real world phenomenon of vast swarms of jellyfish invading the Mediterranean coast. A story of a priest being called to exorcise this demon by throwing a crucifix into the water inspired us to consider a collision of rational science and reactionary superstition as one of the drivers of the story.

We have attributed this phenomenon to the uncontrolled spread of undersea server farms, which contain the aggregate consciousness of humanity, uploaded via social media. This rich, experiential data has attracted and mutated the jellyfish into a biological quantum computer, a sentient, but inscrutable entity that rapidly influences all of humanity.

The jellyfish serve as an 'allegorical monster', and are to networked society what Godzilla is to nuclear energy. The fact that jellyfish have no brain, just a nervous system, and drift with the tides, rather than determine their own course, makes them the ideal analogy for our networked, anomic society.“
