For many years, Apple iTunes Store was the first choice for Americans looking to buy digital music. When the iTunes Music Store debuted in 2003, it marked the beginning of the digital music revolution, as it offered the same convenience that had previously drawn consumers to illegal filesharing services such as Napster.
As the following chart, based on results from Statista’s Global Consumer Survey, shows, other services have long overtaken iTunes when it comes to (paid) digital media consumption. While iTunes is still used quite often to purchase music, used by 35% of digital music consumers over the past 12 months.
