The music of the Prague-born prodigy Erwin Schulhoff has become increasingly popular in recent decades. This release from the superb chamber group Spectrum Concerts Berlin focuses on music written between 1924 and 1927 – including the String Sextet that contained violent contrasts and almost Cubist montage and was a key work in Schulhoff’s artistic development. The recording received high praise from many critics and publications, including Gramophone: “No praise is too high for Spectrum Concerts Berlin, who spare no effort in bringing Schulhoff freshly to life. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to find a more winning introduction to his output, which is also beautifully recorded.” DISCOVER: https://Naxos.lnk.to/8573525FA #OnThisDay

As a composer, Ursula Mamlok is a poetess. In the field of literature, her compositions would equate to poems, not to the expansive genres of the novel or drama. Her works are dense and through-composed. This 2014 release from the Spectrum Concerts Berlin and the Armida Quartett, features a conspectus of her much-admired chamber music, including String Quartet No. 1 and Confluences. "Esta música necesita varias escuchas para desentrañar las diferentes capas y estructura temática, pero bien merece la pena en versiones tan excelentes como la del Spectrum Concerts Berlin, con su director artístico Frank S. Anton Arensky belonged to the generation of Russian composers midway between Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov (that included Glazunov, Gretchaninov and Liadov) and who came to prominence in the closing decade of the 19th century. The Spectrum Concerts Berlin 2015 disc of Arensky's chamber works – which included the Piano Quintet, String Quartet No. 2 and Piano Trio No. 1 – was one of MusicWeb International's Recordings of the Year, and an American Record Guide's Critic's Choice: “There is more joy, more ecstasy, more elan, more tension, more shape to the phrases—and slightly better sound.” DISCOVER: https://Naxos.lnk.to/8573317FA
“Prodigious music played with passionate intensity. For anyone who responds to late Romantic chamber music, these two works are as impressive as they are enjoyable and in performances as committed and accomplished as these they emerge with their stature increased.” – MusicWeb International, Recommended!
