anorak is a curatorial collective and non-profit organisation for contemporary art, run by Lukas Ludwig, Johanna Markert and Florian Model.

Anorak's practice and programme is dedicated to contemporary art and a collaborative way of working with local and international artists. Thinking through various formats such as exhibitions, dinners, talks, and screenings, anorak conceives the exhibition space as a territory of sincere and mutual exchange.

This is the second of two events of the screening programme FANON: IMAGE, PRAXIS & THEORY, which seeks to re-engage with Frantz Fanon’s final book ‘The Wretched of the Earth’ (1961) through and with films, in search for radical ways of being that respond to the times of horror we are living through.

Tewfik Saleh, ‘المخدوون (The Dupes)’, 107 mins, Syria, 1972
Followed by a conversation between Philip Rizk and Hanna al-Taher

Set in the 1950s and adapted from assassinated artist, writer, and Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) leader Ghassan Kanafani’s 1962 novella ‘رجال في الشمس (Men in the Sun)’, Tewfik Saleh’s 1972 masterpiece follows three Palestinian refugees—each man representing a different generation—as they seek safe passage from Iraq to Kuwait, where they hope to secure work and money to send to their families back home.

The conversation will engage with chapter 1 of ‘The Wretched of the Earth’, ‘On Violence’ alongside chapter 4, ‘On National Culture’.

To prepare for the events, we encourage you to read ‘The Wretched of the Earth’. Film with English subtitles; conversation in English. The will provide food, and drinks will be available at the bar.

Chromatic Wednesdays is a monthly interdisciplinary event series based in Berlin, organised by visual artist and filmmaker Emre Birişmen and sound artist Melih Sarıgöl. The series brings together various artistic practices, including performance, sound, moving image, and panel discussions, in thematically structured programs at different venues across the city.

Set in Ethiopia, Haile Gerima's monumental film ‘ምርት "፫ሺህ ዓመት" (Harvest: 3000 Years)’ is the story of a peasant family's struggle for survival on the farm of a wealthy landowner. The drama is set in motion by the teenage son and daughter, who contest social roles, the tyrannical behavior of the landowner, and the revolutionary deeds of the local “madman”.

The conversation will engage with chapter 3 ‘On the Pitfalls of National Consciousness,’ in which Fanon develops his understanding of neocolonialism, and moves on to chapter 5 ‘Colonial War and Mental Disorders,’ which is central to Elena Vogman’s research.

This programme seeks to re-engage with Frantz Fanon’s final book ‘The Wretched of the Earth’ (1961) through and with films, in search for radical ways of being that respond to the times of horror we are living through. The two events in Berlin follow the launch of ‘Majliss Fanon’, a screening programme curated by the filmmakers Baya Medhaffer and Philip Rizk which takes place at the Arab Image Foundation in Beirut from 28 October to 2 November 2026.

In the preface to the Arabic edition the translators write, “Yet Fanon also knows that colonialism may exit through the door only to return through the window—disguised, its features altered, its image reshaped […] Fanon unmasks neocolonialism.” Thus they take the book from the anticolonial moment in which Fanon wrote it and carry it into the neocolonial present.

FANON: IMAGE, PRAXIS & THEORY will take place in Berlin, a city that is many things. It is the capital of a country fully invested in capitalism and neocolonialism steeped in white supremacy—including in the Arabic-speaking region—where Germany’s financial and ideological backing has been vital to Zionism’s colonial project. It is also home to Europe’s largest Palestinian diaspora, as well as a wellspring of cultural producers from around the globe.

To read the book today, FANON: IMAGE, PRAXIS & THEORY proposes a reordering of the chapters to prioritise today’s urgencies.

HISTORY, PRODUCTION, MEMORY: AN AUDIOVISUAL WORKSHOP WITH MARÍA RUIDO

Saturday, 12 September 2026, 12–3pm, at anorak, Gottlieb-Dunkel-Str. 43/44, 8th floor, 12099 Berlin.

In the context of the forthcoming publication of her selected writings in English (b_books, 2027), this workshop — led by the artist and the book’s editors Nicolas Helm-Grovas and Anna R. Winder — centres on Ruido’s ‚Plan Rosebud‘ project (2006–2008).

‚Plan Rosebud‘ focuses on the then-recent social debate around „The Historical Memory Act“ in Spain, and the relations between sites of memory and the politics of memory produced through the cultural industries; and on the Spanish Transition, the period after the end of Franco’s rule.

Through analysis of social movements and popular culture, it seeks to dismantle the idea that a pact among the Spanish ruling elite, led by Adolfo Suárez and King Juan Carlos, „saved“ Spain from a new civil war and paved the way for a „peaceful“ transition to a democratic regime. The project attempts to study popular culture in relation to the different social forces that were the protagonists of political change (unions, the feminist movement, neighbourhood associations and gay and le***an collectives) and analyse why and how certain images from militant cinema showing the collective efforts of these fights have been directly or indirectly censored to make possible the triumphalist, individualistic and linear narrative learned through television and the press.

In the workshop we will watch sections of the film ‚Plan Rosebud‘, collectively read fragments of Ruido’s accompanying text, and discuss these together.

The workshop will be held in English and Spanish (Spanish will be translated into English throughout).

This event is part of Nicolas Helm-Grovas’s and Anna R. Winder’s studio residency at anorak, and is supported by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion (Basisförderung für Projekträume).

A screening of two films by María Ruido, placing one of Ruido’s earliest works in dialogue with one of her most recent.

‚The Inner Memory‘ (2002, 33 mins) is the result of a trip to Germany taken in December 2000 and of a personal investigation lasting over two years, tackling the construction of memory and the mechanisms of the production of history. It explores the experience of the artist’s parents and uncle as „Gastarbeiter“. The film underscores the significance of the body as a territory of memory and absence, and as a political agent, treating the politics of migration from the Spanish state in the sixties and seventies as a form of biopolitics and of control of workers. This is a video about the retrieval of these bodies and their work.

‚The Rules of the Game‘ (2022, 41 mins) is a conversation-performance in sequence shot between the writer and activist Brigitte Vasallo and María Ruido, about trans-class experience, institutional violence, and class and gender performativity. The conversation starts from the idea that being trans-class involves not only a shift of economic and social conditions, but also submission to forms of normativity that blind us, block our subjective transformations, and expropriate things that are rightfully ours. Gesture and language are forced into another mode of performativity, that of the social positions we are now meant to occupy.

TWO FILMS BY MARÍA RUIDO is presented as part of Nicolas Helm-Grovas’s and Anna R. Winder’s studio residency at anorak, and is supported by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion (Basisförderung für Projekträume).

In 2022 we opened our first space in Kreuzberg: artist studio during the day, microcinema and performance space at night. The public programme titled ‘Seeing Is Believing’ emerged from a research group initiated by artist Katharina Jabs during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 9 public editions of ‘Seeing Is Believing’ explored the moving image as a projection surface on which the desire to document and make sense of the world meets the contradictions and inconsistencies it inhabits.It quickly developed into a space that pushed beyond the frame of the traditional screening situation. This included a solidarity screening of work by Freefilmers after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a 3-hour screening and performance night titled ‘Songs of Cockaigne’ with live performances by music trio Golden Fur and crys cole, a film programme by artist James Richards and installation by Tolia Astakhishvili, a screening, conversation and exhibition of work by Basma al-Sharif, and collaborations with Xanadu and Chromatic Wednesdays. We look back with gratitude to this time at Markgrafenstraße 85 which was an incubator for what was to come.

13 years of anorak, and we jump back to 2018/2019 and our residency at Akademie Schloss Solitude.

Living and working alongside artists and researchers, with the time and resources to fully commit to our programme – it was one of the most generative periods in anorak’s practice, and the relationships and collaborations formed that year continue until today. At the heart of it was our programme ‘Gemini’, a twofold exhibition, magazine, and events series that successively unfolded over the year as a collective inquiry into the figure of the double, across venues including the Solitude project space, Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, Delphi Kino, and Climax Institutes.

ARCHIVE #1 13 years of anorak, and we go back into the archive to revisit moments that have shaped our programme. 10 years ago, we hosted '7 Types of Ambivalence', an evening conceived by Mike Sperlinge and organised with Fatima Hellberg at Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, where anorak had a studio residency at the time. Across a four-course dinner interrupted by short presentations and conversation, the evening became a shared reflection on ambivalence as a productive limit - a form of unease, hesitation, or resistance that might reveal something about how we relate to art and the conditions under which it is made and encountered. The chairs and tables were put on wheels and rolled around the room while we ate and talked about wrestling and the things 'we don't like that we don't like, there was a slushy machine, and the night culminated in a live tarot reading into anorak's past, present, and future that we still have mixed feelings about.
The event was the first in our series 'Mixed Feelings', hosted by Künstlerhaus Stuttgart and Palermo Galerie, examining the everyday as an affective and social sphere. The workings of hospitality, collective practice, and organisation / institutionalisation remain relevant for anorak today - running our programme nomadically for the first 7 years, and operating as a Kunstverein that began as a collaboration between artists and friends. As Alkisti Efthymiou framed it back then alongside Stefano Harney and Fred Moten: "It's hard to know what we institute when we don't institute but we do know what it feels like."
