Anorak

anorak is a curatorial collective and non-profit organisation for contemporary art, run by Lukas Ludwig, Johanna Markert and Florian Model.

Anorak's practice and programme is dedicated to contemporary art and a collaborative way of working with local and international artists. Thinking through various formats such as exhibitions, dinners, talks, and screenings, anorak conceives the exhibition space as a territory of sincere and mutual exchange.

In 2022 we opened our first space in Kreuzberg: artist studio during the day, microcinema and performance space at night. The public programme titled ‘Seeing Is Believing’ emerged from a research group initiated by artist Katharina Jabs during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 9 public editions of ‘Seeing Is Believing’ explored the moving image as a projection surface on which the desire to document and make sense of the world meets the contradictions and inconsistencies it inhabits.It quickly developed into a space that pushed beyond the frame of the traditional screening situation. This included a solidarity screening of work by Freefilmers after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a 3-hour screening and performance night titled ‘Songs of Cockaigne’ with live performances by music trio Golden Fur and crys cole, a film programme by artist James Richards and installation by Tolia Astakhishvili, a screening, conversation and exhibition of work by Basma al-Sharif, and collaborations with Xanadu and Chromatic Wednesdays. We look back with gratitude to this time at Markgrafenstraße 85 which was an incubator for what was to come.

13 years of anorak, and we jump back to 2018/2019 and our residency at Akademie Schloss Solitude.

Living and working alongside artists and researchers, with the time and resources to fully commit to our programme – it was one of the most generative periods in anorak’s practice, and the relationships and collaborations formed that year continue until today. At the heart of it was our programme ‘Gemini’, a twofold exhibition, magazine, and events series that successively unfolded over the year as a collective inquiry into the figure of the double, across venues including the Solitude project space, Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, Delphi Kino, and Climax Institutes.

ARCHIVE #1 13 years of anorak, and we go back into the archive to revisit moments that have shaped our programme. 10 years ago, we hosted '7 Types of Ambivalence', an evening conceived by Mike Sperlinge and organised with Fatima Hellberg at Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, where anorak had a studio residency at the time. Across a four-course dinner interrupted by short presentations and conversation, the evening became a shared reflection on ambivalence as a productive limit - a form of unease, hesitation, or resistance that might reveal something about how we relate to art and the conditions under which it is made and encountered. The chairs and tables were put on wheels and rolled around the room while we ate and talked about wrestling and the things 'we don't like that we don't like, there was a slushy machine, and the night culminated in a live tarot reading into anorak's past, present, and future that we still have mixed feelings about.
The event was the first in our series 'Mixed Feelings', hosted by Künstlerhaus Stuttgart and Palermo Galerie, examining the everyday as an affective and social sphere. The workings of hospitality, collective practice, and organisation / institutionalisation remain relevant for anorak today - running our programme nomadically for the first 7 years, and operating as a Kunstverein that began as a collaboration between artists and friends. As Alkisti Efthymiou framed it back then alongside Stefano Harney and Fred Moten: "It's hard to know what we institute when we don't institute but we do know what it feels like."

We’re expanding our studio programme and invite Berlin-based artists, curators, and researchers working primarily in time-based media, writing, translation, publishing, and culinary projects to submit collaborative proposals for a 3-month residency at the shared anorak studio in Berlin-Tempelhof from 1 July – 30 September 2026.

Up to three collaborative projects will be selected. Each comes with free use of the studio and a EUR 1000 artist fee.
