Emma Enderby to become new director of KW!

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Emma Enderby as new director as of 15 May 2024.

Emma Enderby is a curator, writer, and lecturer of modern and contemporary art. She is currently the Head of Programs and Research/Chief Curator at Haus der Kunst, Munich.

“After an exciting selection process and a unanimous vote, we are proud to announce Emma Enderby as the new director of KW. She will bring her wide-ranging, programmatic vigor to KW as of mid-2024. Her committed approach to ecological issues and her focus on positions from outside of the official canon and Berlin as an international hub has inspired and convinced us. We want to thank Krist Gruijthuijsen for creating a program that was as daring as it was rich in perspectives, which has been opening up KW to a diverse audience since 2016. His cooperation efforts resulted in fantastic new networks with international institutions,” says chair of the board Katharina Grosse

Emma Enderby takes over from Krist Gruijthuijsen, who is leaving the institution after eight years in 2024. Gruijthuijsen has been director of KW since 1 July 2016 and his contract had already been extended by the board for another three years in 2021. Emma Enderby will begin her exhibition and event program in January 2025. Until then, Krist Gruijthuijsen and his curatorial team will be responsible for the program.

We look forward to welcome Emma Enderby in Berlin soon! 💙

UNBOUND: PERFORMANCE AS RUPTURE
14 September 2023 – 28 July 2024

The Julia Stoschek Foundation presents an extensive group exhibition featuring 36 artists that looks at the disruptive potential of art, its aesthetic moments, and performative gestures.

UNBOUND: PERFORMANCE AS RUPTURE examines how different generations of artists have called upon the body in relation to the camera to refuse oppressive ideologies, disrupt historical narratives, and unsettle concepts of identity. In addition to performance documentation and performance-for-the-camera, the exhibited artworks offer investigations into contemporary image economies that draw attention to how bodies move through or evade physical and digital spaces.

Setting works from the Julia Stoschek Collection in dialogue with loans, the exhibition traces various intersections of performance and video art from the late 1960s to today, focusing on how they create specific forms of rupture, fracture, and pause.

With Panteha Abareshi, Eleanor Antin, Salim Bayri, Nao Bustamante, Matt Calderwood, Peter Campus, Patty Chang, Julien Creuzet, Vaginal Davis, Ufuoma Essi, VALIE EXPORT, Cao Guimarães, Shuruq Harb, Sanja Iveković, Ulysses Jenkins, Joan Jonas, Stanya Kahn, Verena Kyselka, Tarek Lakhrissi, Klara Lidén, mandla, Graham Clayton-Chance, Lutz Mommartz, Senga Nengudi, Mame-Diarra Niang, Lydia Ourahmane, Christelle Oyiri, P. In order to break down the barrier between the art within the museum and the living environment outside, Mies van der Rohe surrounded the exhibition hall with transparent glass panels instead of walls. To achieve the desired proportions, he took the glass production methods that were available at the time to their limit.

Maxwell Dunlop creates ambiences of peculiar gravity, spaces which narrate with suspense on the one hand and reveal a wide, calm timelessness on the other hand.

Paradox Reality

Representational painting is often seen as an inherent contradiction. The four dimensions of reality are expressed within the two dimensions of the picture plane. A brush stroke presents itself to the viewer as a simultaneous paradox, a pure physically flat material, and an illusion of some external reality. However, human perception of reality is much more in line with the act of painting than we previously believed because our mental models of existence are contradictory fabrications themselves.

The physical reality of the universe is far too complex for us to experience. There is too much data for the human brain to perceive or process, yet our mental models of reality are more than just data compressions of base reality. Our models are subjective, fluid, biased, unique, and flawed.

My work investigates and amplifies the multiple layers of contradictions that make up the human experience. The spaces in these paintings were constructed using a mixture of references from art history, human history, memory, and direct observation. My paintings are symbols that represent and challenge the substructure of our broader cultural and historical environment. They are real and imagined, they exist in the past and the present, and they criticize the history that they represent.

Primarily though, these are paintings. They exist where abstraction and representation vibrate against each other, and the viewer can project their own subjective experiences into the ambiguity of the paint.

"In my life, I've always been involved with fluidity and resisted rigidity. It was automatic – I never had to think about it.", Isa Genzken.

Since the 1970s, Isa Genzken has succeeded in creating art works that make us look at the world differently, question the given, inspire our own reflections and refuse to be categorized. Her complex work is in constant motion and change. It refuses to stand still.

Come by and see for yourself!

'Enrico David – Destroyed Men Come and Go' from 10 June onwards ✨

We are happy to present the first institutional solo exhibition 'Destroyed Men Come and Go' by Enrico David (b.1966, IT) at KW which will be devoted solely to his sculptural practice.

The artist works with sculpture, painting, textiles, and installation, while drawing is also central to his exploration of form. Conveying the struggle of adaptation of the self and the image, Enrico David’s sculptures critically elaborate on the body’s autonomy through its different stages of non-being and becoming.

Curator: Krist Gruijthuijsen
Assistant Curator: Sofie Krogh Christensen

Andrea Damp
„Menagerie“
verlängert bis zum 24. Juni 2023

Andrea Damp
„Menagerie“
extended until June 24th

In her works, the tradition of romantic landscape painting of the 19th century is just as palpable as the painterly achievements of abstraction since 1945 and of Informel. Colour, structure, brightness and consistency are the most important parameters for Andrea Damp to elaborate her paintings, which are developed beyond any figurativeness for long stretches of their creation. Through sometimes minimal figurative elements—which are only inserted into the compositions at a late stage—the entire pictorial space begins to oscillate between abstraction and narration; light and darkness separate, horizons form, depth in space and associations with plants, forests, clouds become possible.

Yesterday we opened the Duo exhibition "Elsa & Emil" by .rouy and at the EIGEN + ART Lab.

"With Elsa Rouy and Emil Urbanek, EIGEN + ART Lab brings together two young and exciting positions for a joint exhibition. Both Rouy’s and Urbanek’s works raise matters no less than being, finding identity, and the human body; they both deliberately evoke contradictory, curious and palpable emotions, albeit in quite different ways.(…)"

Stefan Thiel – DEUTSCHE LANDSCHAFTEN| GERMAN LANDSCAPES
Until April 15

Artist Talk: Sunday March 26, 3 pm

The photographs function as a complement and also a juxtaposition, as well as a parenthesis in terms of content to the black-and-white paintings in oil on canvas.
Stefan Thiel comes from photography and has since his studies of art and photography with Dieter Appelt in Berlin kept his loyalty to this medium, even if other groups of works and artistic techniques have established his fame, such as the fascinating cut outs, which in turn are based on his photographs.
Therefore, it is not by chance that we have juxtaposed a tableau of different photographs with the paintings, even though not all (but almost all) motifs originate from Germany, but were determined by the artist for the photographic work as image-determining. Such as the image shown here.
