Last weekend, the first Baltic Sea Consulate was opened at the annual Transition Conference Omställningsnätverket in Fisksätra, east of Stockholm.

A new group of diplomats took up their posts on behalf of the Baltic Sea.

Their first assignments included drafting letters from the Baltic Sea to those in a position to listen, respond and act; making sacrifices and offerings for its wellbeing; mapping the sea through memories and relationships beyond official borders, coastlines and topography; and compiling a dictionary of missing words.

On behalf of the Baltic Sea: a warm thank you to all the diplomats who took on this important responsibility, lent their voices to the sea, helped expand its presence, and got their feet wet.

The diplomatic work continues.

The project, which is part of the PartArt4OW initiative PartArt4OW, brings together three different fields of practice: Nonhuman Nonsense, a research-driven art and design collective; the Embassy of the Baltic Sea Embassy of the Baltic Sea, working with ecological representation and the Rights of the Baltic Sea; and Under Ytan under_ytan_, an Åland-based regenerative company working with marine ecosystems.

We’re happy to be part of 𝗖𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗮, a group exhibition taking place during Design Fest Ghent Design Fest Gent (3–11 October 2026) in the historic Government House, celebrating the reopening of the Design Museum Ghent. Around 40 designers, artists and architects each present an object or project, and we’re showing our Planetary Personhood project, an interplanetary campaign pursuing radical space decolonization.

𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 proposes independent personhood for the entire planet Mars, and considers the possibility of solidarity with the entities already there – the stones!

Nonhuman Nonsense - en pågående workshop i att tala för havet
Var med och upprätta Östersjöns första konsulat.
Hur skulle ett konsulat för ett hav se ut? Vad skulle hända där? Vem skulle företräda havet, och vilket ansvar skulle det innebära?
Under workshopen (som kommer att pågå under Toppenmötet) tar vi gemensamt fram en första prototyp för ett konsulat för Östersjön – dess struktur, arbetssätt och protokoll.
Genom gemensamt skapande, samtal och smakprover utforskar vi hur ett konsulat skulle kunna lyssna till havet, samla kunskap, översätta olika perspektiv och företräda ett mer-än-mänskligt ekosystem.
Tillsammans utvecklar vi de verktyg, metoder och ramverk som skulle kunna göra det möjligt för framtida konsulat för Östersjön att växa fram på olika platser. Inga förkunskaper behövs.

We’re so happy to start working with Pella Thiel from the Embassy of the Baltic Sea Embassy of the Baltic Sea, and Joel Lindholm from Under Ytan under_ytan_! We will explore the opening of Consulates for the Baltic Sea, representing its more-than-human inhabitants!

What would a consulate for the Baltic Sea look like?

Consulates of the Baltic Sea is a new project by Nonhuman Nonsense, The Embassy of the Baltic Sea and Under Ytan, exploring what it could mean to represent a living sea, and what new forms of diplomacy, care and responsibility might emerge. 

Over the coming months, we’ll travel between different places around the Baltic Sea, bringing together people, communities and different ways of knowing.

What does it mean to speak for the sea? How do we learn to recognise harm and care? And how might we build longer-term relationships of responsibility with the ecosystems we depend on?

Our goal is an open-access toolkit that lets any community establish their own consulate, and start representing the sea as a living, interdependent being, not an inert resource.

23 artists have each created a “preparation”, an object that alters the sound of a piano when placed on or in-between the strings. Each artist has made a preparation that can be held comfortably in the palm of the hand, and the pianists will be encouraged to use as many of the preparations as possible in the piano at once.

With the rise of the private sector and the return of large-scale national ambitions, space colonization now appears inevitable. 𝘼𝙣 𝘼𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙡𝙮 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙤𝙨𝙢𝙤𝙨 critically examines dominant imaginaries shaping our relationship to the universe. The project foregrounds ancestral, Indigenous, community-based, and more‑than‑human cosmovisions and knowledges, in order to imagine anticolonial, non‑extractive, sensitive, and plural futures.

Planetary Personhood is an interplanetary campaign pursuing radical space decolonization.
The project proposes independent personhood for the entire planet Mars, and considers the possibility of solidarity with the entities already there – the stones!

In May we brought 𝐇𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 | 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐜𝐤𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐁𝐚𝐫 to the Staranzano Water Festival Festival dell'acqua Staranzano. The installation combines scientific research and lived experiences on water pollution into a cocktail-bar.

For this occasion, the bar got a new addition to the menu - Asbestos Aperitivo! A chemical cocktail collected by art-science communicator and festival curator Francesco Scarel Francesco Scarel, from the Isonzo river (a.k.a. Soča). Besides heavy metals and pesticides, the cocktail contains asbestos coming from the Salonit cement factory in the Soča valley.
Asbestos never degrades; though production stopped in 1996, the aftertaste remains:
mesothelioma, lung diseases, and over 200 human lives claimed in 2024 across Friuli Venezia Giulia. 

Big THANK YOU to Francesco for being a great host and curator and also for getting a real bar counter for the show, upon which we featured a collection of research papers about the contamination of the local river for the ones who wanted to dive deeper into the issue. It turned out to be also a great projection surface for a little presentation. Very grateful also for .benincasa for taking care of the logistics!

𝐇𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 is a bar that hosts a growing collection of water samples and stories submitted by people from across the Globe. Each bottle is filled not just with H2O, but with the invisible presence of “forever chemicals,” microplastics, and industrial residues. Each sample carries its own spectral narrative: a haunting record of human decisions, corporate negligence, war, and resistance. The project reminds us that our waters are no longer pure or silent, but crowded with histories, warnings, and calls for accountability. Welcome to the Bar. What will you have?

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤 is a proposal to conserve not only endangered seeds, but also endangered cultures. When we lose a plant variety, we also lose its associated dishes, harvesting techniques, legends and ceremonies - biological and cultural diversity are inextricably linked. This project proposes to safeguard biological and cultural information together in the same place: the seed’s DNA.
DNA digital data storage is the process of encoding and decoding binary data into synthesised strands of DNA. Cultural artefacts can be converted into C, T, A, G code, then synthesised and inserted into a seed’s genome using CRISPR techniques. Each bio-cultural seed thus becomes a time capsule for future generations, carrying information not just about the seed’s “what” but also its “how.”

The biocultural seed bank is a response to the mass extinction of species. In the last 120 years, agricultural biodiversity has declined by 90%. Industrialised agricultural practices such as seed patenting and monocropping prioritise efficiency and profit over diversity, creating today’s biodiversity crisis. Seed banks are a counter-movement to the privatisation of the commons. By storing seeds in their multitudes of genetic variations, they preserve hope for a diverse future post-crisis. However, if the culture surrounding a seed is lost, how will future generations know how to cultivate it? Plants don’t thrive in isolation; they rely on specific climates, environments, and companion species; relationships that have been built over many years. Human communities are not just a threat but also a major companion for many plant varieties.

Establishing a biocultural seed bank imposes many questions. What constitutes a seed’s culture? Can culture be reduced to data? Which aspects of natureculture should be conserved, and who decides what is worth saving?
