Theme
When the first man, Adam, saw that he was alone, God created for him a woman who resembled him from the earth. God gave her the name Lilith and brought her to Adam. Immediately they began to argue. Adam said, "You lie under me." And Lilith said, "You are lying under me! We are both the same, because we are both from the earth." And they would not listen to each other.
- The Alphabet of Ben Sira
This exhibition is for FLINTA* Jewish and Muslim (ethnic or religious) artists of all disciplines residing in Berlin. This exhibition aims to provide a platform for dialogue between Jewish and Muslim artists around the common theme of feminism and persecution. The works are inspired by or refer to the story of Lilith, an ambiguous figure from Mesopotamian myth. She is a symbol of all people who have been rejected and punished for being true to their nature. In modern culture, she embodies unbridled freedom and feminism.
She is often described as a notorious demon, her name means "the night", and her story originated in ancient Sumeria before finding its way into Israelite tradition. She is considered the original woman created before Eve, and after her escape from Eden she is often depicted as a thief of newborns. This figure has some needs of her own. She determines the fertilization herself, she dissolves the power factor and independently determines the sexual position. She sets the early act of rebellion against patriarchy and prefers to be called an outcast and a demoness instead of bowing to Adam's authority.
This exhibition will include work on the following themes:
S*xual Liberation / S*x Positivity
Rejection of authority / patriarchy
Equality
Freedom and Feminism
Representations of women throughout history
Gender equality in a historically patriarchal society
Artist's personal experiences with gender equality
Pseudo-authoritarian voices driving a wedge between the sexes
"Lilith- Defiance, Persecution and Equality" is intended to encourage open discussion and all-encompassing interpretation of the above subject matter in a safe space. It aims to promote dialogue and exchange between Muslim and Jewish artists. The exhibition advocates for the recognition of the universal struggle for gender equality and tolerance for people of all faiths.
