Portraitkonzert der Komponistin Younghi Pagh-Paan - Wandlerin zwischen zwei Welten

To celebrate the awarding of the Großer Berliner Kunstpreis to the composer Younghi Pagh-Paan by Akademie der Künste, tomorrow, 10 June 2020, from 20:00 Deutschlandfunk Kultur is broadcasting a live concert with KNM Berlin presenting a selection of the composer’s works spanning a period of five decades. The portrait concert, that was to take place as part of this year’s edition of MaerzMusik, is the culmination of recording sessions currently taking place in Berlin-Dahlem’s Jesus-Christus-Kirche and includes the premiere of “Mein Herz I” (2020).

The exhibition “Here History Began. Tracing the Re/Verberations of Halim El-Dabh“ by SAVVY Contemporary and MaerzMusik would have closed its doors yesterday.

TRACING RE/VERBERATIONS:
“The Egyptians lived in a many-sided world. Modern man searches to reduce this manifold to One. The only singleness to the Egyptian was the balance generated by the Many. Maat is this balance. She is the only Egyptian deity whose name is used as an abstract noun. Maat is Truth. Maat is Justice. Maat is inherent in the Many. The uniqueness of the particular is what makes the balance. To concentrate on similarity would have removed the vibrance of the tensions that generate this balance.”
From booklet of the Album ‚The Hawthorne School: The Osiris Ritual - Ptahmose and The Magic Spell Part 1‘

Our exhibition HERE HISTORY BEGAN. TRACING THE RE/VERBERATIONS OF HALIM EL-DABH, planned together with MaerzMusik, would have closed its doors today. Doors that we couldn't open yet and invite you to listen to these “footnotes” into which El-Dabh has been pushed and to encounter the possibility of bending time, re-mixing history — fast-forwarding, pausing, rewinding, forwarding again, and stopping, almost as if physically spinning on a turntable through temporalities, sonic methods, sonic geographies, (un)timing time and “extending the same mix based on repetitions and recirculations of the same thing”. Bending time – we'll do that again. Soon.

Bolivianisches Orchester sitzt fest

Due to current travel restrictions, our dear guests of OEIN Orquesta Experimental de Instrumentos Nativos are unable to return to their home country Bolivia. The 25 musicians arrived nearly four weeks ago to work with Solistenensemble PHØNIX16 on their joint project “Environment” that was set to open MaerzMusik 2020. Together with the lead team of PHOENIX16, they are stranded in Rheinsberg, accommodated at Musikakademie Rheinsberg until further notice. Parts of the project have been recorded and will be released at a later stage.

Please join us in supporting the ensemble by following this call for donations. Contributions are greatly appreciated and can be directed towards: www.leetchi.com/en/c/wAJZ4qE5

The exhibition “Here History Began. Tracing the Re/Verberations of Halim El-Dabh“, which would have opened as part of MaerzMusik 2020 today, is postponed for now – but SAVVY Contemporary will start sharing insights into into Halim El-Dabh's work and archive.

Today and with all of you, we would have loved to open HERE HISTORY BEGAN. TRACING THE RE/VERBERATIONS OF HALIM EL-DABH together with MaerzMusik to celebrate this fabulous thinker and doer Halim El-Dabh. To follow the sonic, philosophic, academic and political trajectories of this influential composer who preceded the avant-garde, this paramount figure in African and Arab music and philosophy. To share with you what some of us have been working on for the past four years. To inspire new sonicities.

You know us, so you know we will still do all of this, we just need a likkle time to translate it into a different format. So, while we are preparing a full day of SAVVY RADIO INVOCATIONS for HERE HISTORY BEGAN, we will start to share with you insights into the man's work and archive.

We can still travel together – in sound, wisdom and imagination.

On est ensemble!

Today marks the planned opening of #MaerzMusik 2020. Every year, this Festival for Time Issues is creating moments of listening together and thinking about our relation to time. While the current circumstances are shaping time in many different ways, we will find alternative ways and formats to provide you with food for thought and exchange, digital and analogue. We are starting with the MaerzMusik 2020 reader: It comprises original artists’ contributions, in-depth essays on the programme we would have loved to present live and is available now. ✨

About the festival / Über das Festival

MaerzMusik 2020: 20. - 29. März

MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues, directed by Berno Odo Polzer since 2015, is an international festival of sound-based art forms. It explores contemporary music and enquires into the particular modes of time-perception made possible by current forms of musical expression. In this context, music is always seen as a medium of open boundaries, in consonance with contemporary art production, discourse, performance and film. The festival is intended to be a place for encounters, for the communication of experiences and ideas, seeing time as a central category of the political.

+++
