MaerzMusik

MaerzMusik MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues is an international festival of sound-based art forms. It is A phenomenon that resists reduction and definition.
(10)

A Festival for Time Issues – that is a place devoted to our most valuable resource: time. Time, understood as a dimension of experience equally accessible to each and every one. Time as a medium of music and the arts that transcends chronological and efficiency-oriented regimes. But also: Time as an political category that determines the ways in which we live, work and produce – a concept und inve

ntion in service of ideological and economic interests; an instrument of power setting the beat and dictating the rhythm; a dimension of the imaginary that influences our vision of futurity and hence our freedom of action. Time as a notion of agency for contemporaries, individuals and societies.

Familar faces at the Pierre Boulez Saal: A concert featuring a single work by a single composer, and a living one at that, is a rare occurrence. If only you could hear these photos…It’s impossible to summarise our highlights from the final night of MaerzMusik 2023 in just 10 pictures, but we gave it a go.

With Grenzraum HÖREN and the Electroacoustic and Experimental Electronic Works programme, last night, MaerzMusik 2023 came to an end. 10 days of knowledge exchange, encounters and collective experiences in the world of sound are over.

Thank you to everyone who made the festival what it was. Thank you to our artists, our partners and of course you, our fantastic audience. We’ll see you next year.

Saturday night was full of stunning performances!

In ‘Variations on a Voice’ Rebecca Saunders’s ‘The Mouth’ has had a brilliant German premiere. Juliet Fraser and Alexis Baskind explored the wide range of colours and sounds produced in the oral cavity as the mouth embodies the threshold between the inner and the sounding voice.

The Riot Ensemble allowed wild chaos to be wild chaos with no attempts to structure or systemize something that just is in Bára Gísladóttir’s ‘Animal of your Pasture’ and dealed with insatiable harmonies in Oliver Thurley’s ‘the heart is a knot’. Alex Paxton's Dream Musics and the Riot Ensemble did not only present ‘Blue-Chew Cheerio Earpiece’, a commissional work for 2023, but also joint forces on stage for the first time ever.

With ‘Nachtstücke/synthetic DNA 1’ the synthesizer trio lange//berweck//lorenz experimented with clear concepts and improvisation while focussing on a listening approach to the composition.

We are fast approaching the finale of MaerzMusik 2023!

Electroacoustic and Experimental Electronic Works will feature pieces by Hanna Hartman, Miya Masaoka, Else Marie Pade, Christian Kesten, Jacob Kirkegaard, Vinyl -terror & -horror and others.

The very last part of the concert will be Svævninger by Jacob Kirkegaard and Else Marie Pade.

A diffusion that will combine a selection of pade's early (and previously unreleased) sound experiments with some of Kirkegaard's recordings from his own ear - leading the audience directly into the undiscovered labyrinth of its own hearing.

"Sisters with Transistors" tells the remarkable, previously unappreciated story of electronic music pioneers - women composers who appropriated machines and their liberating technologies to fundamentally change the way we produce and listen to music. These visionaries include Clara Rockmore, Daphne Oram, Bebe Barron, Pauline Oliveros, Delia Derbyshire, Maryanne Amacher, Éliane Radigue, Suzanne Ciani and Laurie Spiegel.

“We will sit here together waiting for the sounds and whispers – at the same time offering each other the history of a place and its ghosts. We will talk to them
and listen to their stories”.
Will you join us?

Our "Library of MaerzMusik" programme officially debuts today with a conversation between Chaya Czernowin and Noa Frenkel.

We gain an insight into the artists and their practices through books, scores, notations, and ideas that they themselves have provided to fill the library. The artists share their knowledge in interactive formats, lectures and artistic interventions. The Library is a place of togetherness, movement and reorientation which visitors will bring to life by interacting with the space and sharing their ideas in it.

“I really wanted to rethink this notion of what is contemporary new music.”

We are thrilled that Elaine Mitchener is returning to MaerzMusik, appearing on stage twice during the festival.

Her work ‘On Being Human as Praxis’ draws on the jamaican feminist writer and cultural theorist Sylvia Wynter to address questions of what it means to be human in our present time.

Michener also features in Laure M. Hiendl’s work, ‘Songs for Captured Voices’ which explores the ways that human voices have been instrumentalised throughout history and become the object of asymmetrical power negotiations.

Liza Lim’s “S*x Magic” is a ritual for ocarina, contrabass flute, electronics, and percussion. For the composer, it is about “the sacred erotic in women’s history” and “an alternative cultural logic of women’s power as connected to the cycles of the womb – the life-making powers of childbirth, the ‘skin-changing’, world-synchronising temporalities of the body and the womb centre as a site of divinatory wisdom”.

For the seventh collaboration between SAVVY Contemporary and MaerzMusik, A Dang Radio will present LAKBAYAN. VOICES OF RESISTANCE FROM THE PHILIPPINES – a collection of protest music and sonic expressions of dissent and sociopolitical struggles in the Philippines.

📢 NEXT UP IN THE SAVVY HOUSE 📢
For the seventh collaboration between SAVVY Contemporary and MaerzMusik, Dang A Dang Radio will present LAKBAYAN: Voices of Resistance from the Philippines – a collection of protest music and sonic expressions of dissent and sociopolitical struggles in the Philippines.

Through a sampling of the archive via “listening stations” with additional text and visual material, it will enrich the contemporary understanding of protest through the vibration, frequency, and tonality of voice, sound and music.

The exhibition will present an inter-generational selection of sounds from the classics of the First Quarter Storm movement, a period of civil unrest in the 1970s, to the current generation of activists and musicians, accompanied by background information and context through materials like songbooks, liner notes, posters, and photographs from the collection of Dang A Dang Radio, and other progressive organizations.

Drawing from the spirit of the Lakbayan, the exhibition will “transport” the stories of struggle from the peripheries, not as an appeal for mercy, but in a call for solidarity. It will map the themes and sectors represented in the archive and how they are reflected in the music and other audio materials featured. It hopes to show not just worsening conditions and oppression, but also the sound of movements gaining strength and building political power.

Enriching MaerzMusik this year: Agnese Toniutti. The Italian pianist is dedicated to exploring a unique piano repertoire, focused on the idea of sound. Excerpts from writings and audio documents often complement her live performances. Her work includes concerts dedicated to women's creativity from the 1950s to the present, like Lucia Dlugoszewski's research project on "timbre piano".

About the festival / Über das Festival

MaerzMusik 2020: 20. - 29. März

MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues, directed by Berno Odo Polzer since 2015, is an international festival of sound-based art forms. It explores contemporary music and enquires into the particular modes of time-perception made possible by current forms of musical expression. In this context, music is always seen as a medium of open boundaries, in consonance with contemporary art production, discourse, performance and film. The festival is intended to be a place for encounters, for the communication of experiences and ideas, seeing time as a central category of the political.
