Within the context of „Schule machen: Querklang - Experimentelles Komponieren in der Schule“ Berlin pupils have been investigating sounds for many years, arranging them into compositions which they then share with the public during the festival MaerzMusik. Now the project's existence is at risk.

What a festival week (and a half)! Blessed with the sunniest weather, it went by in a haze of sonic and social encounters.

We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone joining us in this year’s MaerzMusik – be it on stage, backstage, in front of the stages, in the gallery spaces of SAVVY Contemporary and Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD , in transmediale's deckchairs, on Cashmere Radio's golden floor, underneath the trees of Nettelbeckplatz. 💛

A vast fungal network of branching filaments – the mycelium – was the guiding metaphor of this festival, traversing species and milieus, connecting, supporting, signalling, communicating, decomposing, detoxifying, and healing in ways that are yet to be fully understood. Thank you for exploring with us how to relate in different and diverse ways.

💡 “Holy 204” with works by Yara Mekawei is on display until 15 May.2022 at daadgalerie and the exhibition “In What Century Will the Earth’s North and South Poles Change Polarities?” on, of, for, with Benjamin Patterson is open for visitors at SAVVY Contemporary again from 31 March until 17 April 2022.

🎧🎥 You can also watch and listen to some of our streaming programme on demand, including Éliane Radigue’s Occam Océan and the Benjamin Patterson invocations! bit.ly/3IGesXb

For all those who were unable to attend Occam Océan at the Philharmonie on Wednesday evening, we have captured the most beautiful impressions. 🎻 Klangforum Wien and the Parisian ensemble ONCEIM played one of the greatest pieces together from Éliane Radigue's third creative period with purely instrumental compositions. The clue: Radigue developed a working method together with the musicians that is based exclusively on oral and auditory tradition.

Previously, the two ensembles played works by Liza Lim and Patricia Bosshard - you can listen to the recording in our media library!

A first hand look at…

Sound artist and fellow of the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Programme Yara Mekawei joins MaerzMusik for her first solo exhibition in Germany with Holy 204. The sound installation translates and transforms Sufi poetry from the 10th and 13th centuries into “resonating sculptures”: material compositions centred around cryptography that appeal to our ethics, emotions, and spirituality.

Running until 27.3 as part of MaerzMusik and continuing until 15.5 at the daadgalerie. Free admission.

Occam Ocean - MaerzMusik 2022

“There’s probably no one who is better acquainted with her sound than him.”

The composer François Bonnet is taking charge of presenting Éliane Radigue’s entire catalogue of electronic works in a retrospective on the pioneering artist that is taking place at Zeiss-Großplanetarium as part of this year’s MaerzMusik.

Don’t forget you can catch Occam Ocean, performed by Klangforum Wien, ONCEIM, Liza Lim, and more on our livestream, tonight from 20:00: mediathek.berlinerfestspiele.de/en/maerzmusik/2022/occam-ocean

Read more about Radigue, her music, and Bonnet’s role in realising the project (*): https://www.br-klassik.de/aktuell/news-kritik/portrait-eliane-radigue-komponistin-retrospektive-maerzmusik-berliner-festspiele-100.html

(*Please note, this article is in German)

Éliane Radigue`s first piece for orchestra “Occam Océan” marks the third work period of the music pioneer and is at the same time an example of collective knowledge transfer through oral and aural transmission – embodied and performed by members of Klangforum Wien together with ONCEIM.

The “Mycelium Revolution” is ongoing. But what is it, and what aesthetic, discursive, and cultural implications does it have for us?

Consisting of lectures, interviews, research reports, art, and more, Daniela Bershan and Nahla Koch have compiled a variety of audiovisual material that seeks to reflect theoretical and practical knowledge in order to help us explore these questions related to the world of fungi and the mycelium in particular.

The Mycelial Media Archive is open daily from 14:00–18:00 at transmediale studio in silent green. Admission free. Further information: https://bit.ly/3591io8

Invocations marked the opening of the retrospective on Benjamin Patterson, his life, and five decades of work that is being exhibited at SAVVY Contemporary – and we have a few impressions to share with you.

Together with the Patterson Estate and Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden, SAVVY Contemporary and MaerzMusik invited artists, curators, scholars, and companions to reflect on the Fluxus co-founder’s art and legacy.

Featuring original scores, texts, artworks, videos, and more, IN WHAT CENTURY WILL THE EARTH’S NORTH AND SOUTH POLES CHANGE POLARITIES? is Benjamin Patterson’s first comprehensive solo exhibition in Berlin.

Hello everyone, it’s so good to see you again. 🙋 We kicked off MaerzMusik at the Gropius Bau yesterday, wandering through archipelagos of music under the spacious roof of the Gropius Bau. MaerzMusik will be back at Gropius Bau on 25 March with Querklang and the stage performance and audiovisual installation “100 Cymbals”, featuring Les Percussions de Strasbourg, John Cage and Ryoji Ikeda .

At this year's MaerzMusik, community radio Cashmere Radio will be accompanying the festival. We visited them in their studio right next to silent green to have a chat about their feature Off Space / On Air: A Cashmere Radio Format which combines music, interviews, and interventions. The format aims to become a place and a frequency to informally and openly share influences, processes and perspectives around MaerzMusik through the affinity of radio.

Starting tomorrow and taking place daily until 25.3 from 19:00–20:00 at Cashmere Radio and broadcast live.

MaerzMusik | Peter Meanwell & Catherine Lamb

“How as a community of people can we imagine a more sustainable future for music and art?” is Peter Meanwells questions for composer Catherine Lamb.

Listen to an extract of her answer here, the complete version of which can be found in our online library. bit.ly/36fOhJJ

This Sunday, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church becomes a resonating space for a portrait concert of the composer Catherine Lamb with two works for a variety of instrumentations: Premiering as part of MaerzMusik 2022, “inter-spatia” is a new microtonal brass septet that follows an elemental structural progression, carried by a spatial, star-like formation of the musicians. Enveloped by microsounds, listeners experience an ongoing dynamic of relations through different sound intensities.

Memory Biwa and Robert Machiri

Memory Biwa and Robert Machiri, known as Listening at Pungwe, are a multidisciplinary collective working between Windhoek (Namibia) and Johannesburg (South Africa). With Llorenç Barber they will kick off Interpoiesis 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 this Sunday. The concert series in silent green’s Kuppelhalle facilitates multi-generational and intersectional musical encounters of artists from diverse backgrounds who have never collaborated with each other before.

With Digital in Berlin PUNGWE, who are one of this year's fellows of Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD, shared 3 facts and answered 11 questions. ↓

About the festival / Über das Festival

MaerzMusik 2020: 20. - 29. März

MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues, directed by Berno Odo Polzer since 2015, is an international festival of sound-based art forms. It explores contemporary music and enquires into the particular modes of time-perception made possible by current forms of musical expression. In this context, music is always seen as a medium of open boundaries, in consonance with contemporary art production, discourse, performance and film. The festival is intended to be a place for encounters, for the communication of experiences and ideas, seeing time as a central category of the political.
