Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop & Guests – LOVE:15

LOVE:15 is the celebration of Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop’s 15th anniversary. For Alain Badiou, differences in perception are the basis of the creative power of love. This is mirrored in the partnerships created between ensemble members and the invited artists, who together, will develop individual duets.

Before we jump into MaerzMusik, this interpoietic event explores the way we form and express relationships.

The mycelium pervades the soil, traversing species and milieus, connecting, supporting, signalling, communicating, decomposing, detoxifying, and healing in ways that are yet to be fully understood.

These visible and invisible forms of connection make up the primary theme of this year’s festival and are central to the film screenings, workshops, presentations, reading groups, and performances that you can take part in.

Breathing is implicit in the creation of almost all music – at least in one way or another. But to focus entirely on breathing’s sonic expressive potential as the material of music?

Composer christian kesten's opera for five voices does this, thereby asking us to explore the way we perceive faces, music, and personhood. By contrasting sound and facial expressions through the use of 5 screens and 5 channel sound, Kesten mobilises a sound space that structures a playing field of encounters.

Hear and behold, our new MaerzMusik trailer – bringing with it updates and additions to our festival programme! 🕵️‍♀️

The festival’s closing event continues its pandemic-induced transformation as it moves into the urban space: Comprising of live performances, listening stations, and sound installations at 6 locations around the Nettelbeckplatz in Berlin/Wedding, the project entitled A Garden of Forking Paths – Finale moves audiences to discover through hearing.

Taking place at silent green’s Kuppelhalle, the line-up for the artistic encounters Interpoiesis 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 has also been finalised:

Polyphony, the style of musical composition employing multiple simultaneous but independent voices and melodies, is at the centre of several MaerzMusik events this year.

The concert-performance New Polyphonies: Myriam Van Imschoot & HYOID Voices addresses the question of the democratisation of polyphonic art and its social implications: the leitmotif in this concert-performance is not the loud collective chant, but the experience that each individual – like a link in a chain – can set a vortex of sounds in motion.

The stage performance and an audiovisual installation 100 Cymbals: Les Percussions de Strasbourg, John Cage, Ryoji Ikeda“ invites to explore the polyphonic potential of cymbals. The ensemble Les Percussions de Strasbourg presents Ryoji Ikeda's 2019 work as well as the musical portrait of Hans Arp by John Cage.

MaerzMusik 2022 | Programme out now!

This year’s MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues (18 to 27 March) focuses on the visible and invisible relations that hold everything together, in music and beyond. The ten-day programme will take place in ten venues across Berlin – with Silent Green as the festival's centre, and opening at the Gropius Bau. MaerzMusik 2022 presents a programme within which relationality can be rethought, redrawn and artistically experimented with, featuring artists and guests such as Éliane Radigue, Benjamin Patterson (at SAVVY Contemporary), Klangforum Wien and ONCEIM.

With Cashmere Radio we transmit a daily programme that aims to become a place and a frequency to openly share influences, processes and perspectives of the festival. Finally, The Long Now migrates and transforms into a constellation of interconnected spaces around the Nettelbeckplatz in Wedding that each inhabits their own temporality.

MaerzMusik 2020: 20. - 29. März

MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues, directed by Berno Odo Polzer since 2015, is an international festival of sound-based art forms. It explores contemporary music and enquires into the particular modes of time-perception made possible by current forms of musical expression. In this context, music is always seen as a medium of open boundaries, in consonance with contemporary art production, discourse, performance and film. The festival is intended to be a place for encounters, for the communication of experiences and ideas, seeing time as a central category of the political.
