Dr. Illa Ben-Porat is a sociologist as well as a novelist and musician. She currently teaches at Kibbutzim College in Tel Aviv, Israel. Her studies deal with the relationship between nation states and the diasporic populations. Just as a homeland plays an active part in conceptualizing certain diasporic populations as belonging to it, so too does the diasporic population influence the national collective reshaping its character. She is joining the all-female government tomorrow night at the Volksbühne.

Volksbühne Berlin presents Yael Bartana's "What if Women Ruled the World?"

#VOLKSBÜHNE #YaelBartana

On April 12, Volksbühne presents Yael Bartana’s "What if Women Ruled the World?" for the first time in Germany. The end of the world is drawing near, it's two minutes to midnight. In the cabinet of a country with a pacifist constitution and a state disarmament programme, the president and her ministers face a dilemma. Another country is breaking a joint international agreement by announcing an increase in its nuclear stockpiles. Will they abandon their one-sided disarmament or continue with their original plan?

Inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s satire "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" (1964), Yael Bartana brings actresses together with a diverse cast of female scientists and activists for every performance. Intertwining fiction and serious political experiment, together they attempt to solve pressing global problems and keep the Doomsday Clock from reaching midnight.

In her film, installations, photographs and theatre projects, Yael Bartana (born 1970 in Kfar Yehezkel, Israel, lives in Berlin and Amsterdam) questions national and historical narratives. By simulating certain situations and combining fiction and reality in different ways, she offers counter stories and fosters real change.

Participating experts include: Syrian activist and journalist Ameenah A. Sawwan, DaMigra (an umbrella organisation for work with marginalised migrants) Director Virginia Wangare Greiner (Frankfurt), political scientist and journalist Kübra Gümüsay (Berlin), nuclear weapon expert Dr. Beyza Unal (London), researcher at the Peace Research Institut Frankfurt Carmen Wunderlich, change.org Vice-President Paula Peters (Berlin) and Royal Danish Defence College Professor Dr Carina Meyn.
Actresses: Alix Wilton Regan, Anne Tismer, Noa Bodner, Olwen Fouéré and Jo Martin.
Moderators: Antje Stahl and Anat Saragusti.

How Maps Look Different When Women Make Them

“For most of human history, maps have been very exclusive,” said Marie Price, the first woman president of the American Geographical Society, appointed 165 years into its 167-year history. “Only a few people got to make maps, and they were carefully guarded, and they were not participatory.”

For one thing, childcare centers and women's health clinics show up as readily as sports arenas.

Judith Butler on #MeToo and "Thinking in Alliance"

"If there is a common political project, it is to be found in the affirmation of a society that will join together to fight the new forms of authoritarianism and fascism—women and their allies will doubtless be at the forefront, but so too will be the qu**rs and the trans, the sans papiers, and those whose work no longer pays them a living wage."
—Judith Butler

[image] The Verso blog has published a translation of a short interview that Judith Butler did with the French newspaper l'Humanité. In the interview, Butler addresses the ramifications of the #MeToo movement, and proposes forms of political alliance that don't collapse into a simplistic idea of "u...

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists informs the public about threats to the survival and development of humanity from nuclear weapons, climate change, and emerging technologies in the life sciences.
