NAH DRAN extended: beginnings // THIAGO ROSA & GARETH OKAN // rehearsals // work in process
»"False Start" takes the pregame preamble and preparation of the sports world and puts it in the limelight.
Transposing these moments from their original context and placing them in urban settings.
Thiago Rosa and Gareth Okan employ the use of commentary to play with expectations and the absurdity of needing to have our attention at all times.
The catalyst for the research was observing the power vacuum that occurred during the Covid-19 lockdowns as all major sports outlets stopped, thus allowing for the parody and fringe to take the central position.
They want to look at the ways in which sports channels josel for as much of our attention as they can get. And it is here in the pre ramble that they wish to play.
Over a youtube live stream Thiago and Gareth will broadcast a live interaction with themselves on film.« @garethokan
The link to the video will be available on ada‘s website at the time the performance is going to start: Friday, July 3, 6pm and Sunday, July 5, 5pm

NOW ONLINE! NAH DRAN extended: beginnings // LIISI HINT & MARIA LADOPOULOS // rehearsals // work in process
»Liisi Hint’s and Maria Ladopoulos’ research involved writing over 140 emails to people (from dancers to painters to neuroscientists to lawyers) asking about their thoughts on beginning(s). While gathering this collection of experiences and associations, they opened up multiple channels of conversation with each other, trying to process the overwhelming assortment of responses as well as figuring out their own connotations.
In an attempt to articulate their findings so far, a braincast was made.
It is a podcast of thoughts; a broadcast of the inside of their brains; it is a fossil cast of their mind after pondering over beginnings for some time.
Welcome to the audio experience “Beginnings - a braincast”!« @laairamaria @wihhje
The link to the audio download will be available on ada studio’s website from Thursday, July 2, 10 am until Sunday, July 5, 5 pm.

»My atelier don't really influence my piece, because i constantly train my skills and motions in other dance studio. My piece is based on improvisation i don't rehearse it. Recently i built a Diptych with two of my paintings to include theme in the scenography of the performance. Dance and performing for me is an opportunity each time to experiment and connect with an higher self. An introspection who allow me to discover and understand myself.« @thomyyas

»Between us lays a collective dreaming, that founds the ground for the building of a shared space — Haven, Zufluchtsort, is a ceremony for that place of longing, a way of coming together, a collective gaze towards the horizon.
How do we dream together and how does this shared dream manifest? It has become a set of rituals for the ever moving, transforming processes of longing. Manifested through different materials: A dream catcher and our faces made into paper-marché, the process of dyeing with natural colours becoming a blanket, the resonance of sound to bone and of body to body. In the accumulated materials there layes an ongoing seeking. A practice of ongoingness. To let oneself get lost, and found again in a different form or identity. To connect to a non-linear time perception, where one minute feels like three hours and three hours feels like one minute. During these rituals the sense of who dreams what, fades out. Together we weave and collect with our bodies, sound, voices, hands and energy. A way of aligning our bodies and minds.«

A.PART FESTIVAL 2020 // works in process // MILLA TOPPI // Pottuja // https://apart-festival.blog
»“Pottuja” (Finnish for potatoes) is a minimal and surrealist self-portrait based on two biographically relevant objects. It’s an outcome of research done on tensions between my roots, my willingness to adapt, and social anxiety. It attempts to describe the bodily manifestations of awkwardness, embarrassment, and avoidance, followed by the sense of alienation and isolation from others. It questions audiences empathy and ability to read body language. How important is the face or any particular part of our body in describing our inner state, and how distorted is this description when not all the parts are visible?« Milla Toppi

»Bonbon asks what exactly we associate with beauty and how preconceived ideas prevent us from seeing it in many places. The three dancers perform three dolls, embodying corsets and ideal images. “Bonbon” is about the interplay between external influences and self-determination. The boundary between inside and outside becomes blurred––to such an extent that we must ask ourselves whether they can be separated. Perhaps they form a unity?«

»In “hesitation waltz“, two bodies meet, unfolding a specific fine logic of togetherness in moments of hesitation. A physical quality and a dynamic of hesitation emerges, that opposes the widespread idea that hesitation is an unproductive sign of weakness. “hesitation waltz” negotiates contemplation as an active gesture and productive force of questioning, which provides space for freedom and imagination. To hesitate does not only mean to have a sense of reality but a sense of possibility: It may well be that everything is entirely different.«

»In my solo “mit ohne Worte”, I explore the combination of sign language and dance. The facial expressions and gestures of sign language lead me and make me dance. My solo is the attempt to dance sign language, or to speak dance in sign language. Sign language and dance have a specific thing in common: both are forms of communication. In sign language as well as in dance, it is about conveying something to someone with expressive facial expressions and gestures – and all this without words.
My work is also about the conflict between the current speed of life and the desire to slow down. I incorporate this aspect into my work because I have been thinking a lot about it. I am always in motion, I am always wide awake, I will do everything right, I will be strong, I will be perfect.
– But for whom? I want to be free, take a break, have time for myself, live in the moment –« Sophie Geisler

Introducing two artists out of sixteen:
CLARA DÜNNEBEIL creating »EinBlick«
»With my solo ‘EinBlick’, I provide an insight into the search for one’s place in the world and also into the doubts and helplessness one encounters. A place where you like to stay and feel at home is what we are probably all looking for. I literally set myself up on stage because, in my future as a dancer, this will be my professional ‘living room’.«
LAUREN FITZGERALD creating »Like they were laughing«
»My solo ‘Like they were laughing’ looks at the experience of following one’s desires and dreams into a new world/ career/ place, more specifically, my personal experience of leaving a technical career behind to focus on dance. Using the metaphor of washing up onto a beach, the piece tracks the stages of this process. The floating (in the ocean), the dreaming (of the waves), the diving (onto shore), the struggle and self-doubt (of the sand), the conforming (to the air), the freedom and joy (of the messy wind) and the simultaneous yearning for the comfort of what was before (waves).«

»In this context of sharing the course of our research, I might not speak too much about my work, but I may open my thoughts and offer my reflection through this blog format that is proposed to me. That could, indeed, change on the way. I might decide to separate in my posts these reflections from the works or works in progress I’ll post, so who wants to read can read, who wants to watch can just watch. If it feels more difficult to share my thoughts than my dance, I should as well try and go through this feeling of vulnerability that appears as I am about to share these words.« Jeanne Binet

»I think this shift is the hardest one to deal with. What I love about live performance and dance, moving in the same space as the viewer, is that you can create magic. There is a certain power in hearing the real breath, the proximity of the performer, where you can pull your viewers attention in through the simplest of actions. Now online or in film, this magic has to happen through other elements. Rodolfo and I joke that we started this process as dancers/choreographers but we will come out as film editors.« @indeliblevictoria

»Our daily working flow is also a bit of a work in progress I would say and it is adjusting as we move into more and more film work. Generally though, we individually 'warmup' (in whatever way that is needed mentally or physically) from 10 and then we 'meet' at 11.00 for a video chat, sharing ideas, building and giving tasks to film for about 45 to an hour. Then we go off in our separate living rooms and work until the afternoon and later share videos. This week we did lots of outdoor filming and also mapped out a possible narrative/scene flow for the piece. So now we need to try it out and get as much material as possible. For me, creating in my bedroom or living room has really shifted my physicality. The theatrical scenes seem to be coming first and later movement material, which is usually the opposite of previous residency's. But I also like filmic aspect that using different spaces in my WG brings. I've been creating more 'film sets' for a certain tasks and playing with costumes more. Which is fun, it feeds my inner drama queen I think ;)« Victoria McConnell

»Connected with the work I developed with Maria Torrents Soler about Memory, this one goes around the idea of no-endings. I place the body as a means connecting past, present and future and I ask myself where do we start and where do we end. It’s not about the body’s immortality, but about heritage and its continuation and transformation through our body into the future.« Nicolette Michalla

»I just wanted to do a Work where I was exploring my own body by bringing my own experience as research material, and create a distance between the body and myself as if it was a second presence so we could talk about our story together - how we learned each other and grow together.
At this point, everything is still pretty new and fresh. I feel that I am still in a phase of discovering. Every time I find inspiration in my body from a new perspective. I try to be the most honest about what I look for, and once I find a momentum that I feel resonates with my vision I stick with it. Then I go deep on its exploration in order to see new ways of building, breaking and giving it new shapes as well as layering the material and mix it with other parallel discoveries to see what new Bárbara is created.
For now, I am going with the process flow, I feel it is growing day by day and I don’t want my expectation to put any pressure on the work. Therefore I am just open, trusting and enjoying the research process.« Bárbara Conde

»The reason I called my piece »This Evening’s Dance« is because I feel like each time it is really THAT evening’s dance.
