ALEXANDRA GINSBERG, asking how we can make the world better

How can we make the world ‚better‘? And thinking of a post-pandemic world, who will be impacted by these possible versions of 'better'?

In her practice, Alexander Daisy Ginsberg sets out to creatively critique and ask what different versions of better mean and who will benefit from these possible realities.

We had the honor to work with Ginsberg in the context of the exhibition HYPERTOPIA, which sought to reflect on artistic proposals that confronted the major crises of our time.

Her work Designing for the Sixth Extinction seeks thus to rearticulate the role design plays in the field of synthetic biology and opens a window into a possible world field with biotechnologically aided surreal landscapes.

Take a look and get inspired by the words of @daisyginsberg. Written by

We're happy to welcome you tonight at 7pm for the performance by The Society of Nontrivial Pursuits!

The audiovisual happening starts with a performance evening of solos, duos & groups, ranging from classical Korean instruments to remote shared live coding. Followed by a week-long exhibition, displayed online and in the windows of the State Studio building, the installations include staged zoom conferences - entirely in the spirit of 2021-,automatic pen drawings, feedback system flowers and a “ghost performance” that de/re-composes the traces of the live shows from the opening event.

~ ArtScience Monthly #12 ~
In how far do you experience a feeling of kinship with non-human beings? What new and different creatures might we become if we felt kinship for all life forms? We're looking forward to delving into these questions with you on Tuesday, together with artist Anne Duk Hee Jordan.

Through her work, Duk Hee opens up doors to a universe where she humorously and romantically creates machines that juxtapose robotic consciousness with organic cyclic decay and life. Her sculptures are intended to draw the viewer into the present and open a dialogue between natural phenomena, philosophy and art.

~ ArtScience Monthly #12 ~
What if the material world displayed subjectivity, feeling, and personhood? How would an animistic idea of "aliveness" transform our relationship to reality and our attitude towards the planet?

Next Tuesday, we'll have the pleasure of listening to Dr. Andreas Weber. Andreas is a biologist, philosopher and writer. His work focuses on a re-evaluation of our understanding of the living. He proposes to view – and treat – all organisms as subjects and hence the biosphere as a meaning-creating and poetic reality.

We're looking forward to exploring these questions with you, Curious Minds from around the world! Join us next Tuesday, March 16, 7pm CET via Zoom

In the World of Himali Singh Soin

How do you imagine the world in 20 years? What is the emotion that drives you in your work? How do you care for your community?

The artist Himali Singh, who formed part of our exhibition HYPERTOPIA, shares her views of the world and her pursuit of a more equitable future. She thinks through ecological loss, and the loss of home, seeking shelter somewhere in the radicality of love. Her speculations are performed in audio-visual, immersive environments. Step into Himali’s world and check out her interview @oneresilientearth. The HYPERTOPA publication including the artwork and a written piece by the acclaimed artist will be available at the end of March!

The exhibition HYPERTOPIA was driven by the vision of a collective change in consciousness. The interdisciplinary program and exhibition anticipated a future after the crisis in order to explore approaches for a meaningful present.
Stay tuned!

For our BRAINPALACE project, lights are projected on Tatjana Busch's sculpture and reverberate throughout the gallery space. This creates an immersive aesthetic experience that is further enhanced by the sound environment of ATELIER E. After taking part in this multi-sensorial experience, some members of the team said they felt part of a larger whole.

We're curious: Tell us about a time when you felt connected with your environment. What triggered such an experience? How would you describe this feeling, in your own words?

Leave us your thoughts in the comments!

The project “BRAINPALACE - BRAINPATTERNS Power and Patterns of Thought” is realized as part of the exhibition series “Science and Art in Dialogue’' and the network “Science, Art and Design” of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering IAO and the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM.
It is a collaboration between the artists Tatjana Busch, Christian Losert and Daniel Dalfovo (Atelier E), the researchers Mathias Vukelić, Ravi Kanth Kosuru, Hans Trinkaus, Alex Sarishvili, Laura Kaltwasser, Dorothée Höfter and STATE Studio.

Curious Minds: Art Science Monthly #7 (1/2) - Jonathon Keats

(Re)discover the talk by Experimental Philosopher Jonathon Keats, given at the ArtScience Monthly #7!

"What I'm most curious about is to probe the underlying operating systems within our society (...) For instance, I've been engaged in time recently. I've built a clock in Alaska, that is calibrated by the flow of rivers (...) There are alternative ways in which we can look at time. And we can look at time as an emergent phenomenon of life itself, of the planet. And that's what the rivers can give us".

#jonathonkeats is an experimental philosopher, artist, and writer whose work explores all aspects of society through science and technology. At the ArtScience Monthly session of last September, he told us about how he uses thought-experiments to engage in collective reflections on aspects of our culture that we remain mostly unaware of.

Also, here is a great article to dig deeper into Jonathon's practice: https://medium.com/experiental-space-research-lab/considering-reorientation-of-the-self-with-artist-jonathan-keats-626850febfb5

#Didyouknow?

Even imagining an activity can trigger measurable changes of electrical brain activity: the so-called Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) are based on exactly this observation.

The most common neurotechnological measurement method for recording brain activity is electroencephalography (EEG). According to the same procedure, the participants of BRAINPALACE receive feedback about their brain activity through the art installation and can thus actively influence it.

Increasingly, the EEG-based BCIs can also be used in the context of neurofeedback training. Neurofeedback is a therapy method that makes it possible to improve the brain's ability to self-regulate by specifically modulating brain patterns in the desired direction. This allows the feedback of the own brain state to the user. In this way, the user is able to influence his or her own brain activation in a specific way.

Creative synergies between science, art, and innovation

Founded in 2014, the open science initiative STATE returns to its place of origin: Berlin. With STATE Studio, we unify two festivals, a pop-up studio in Los Angeles and other international adventures in a new permanent forum for future discourse. STATE Studio Berlin presents in its novel 300m² venue the ongoing exhibition series Field Experiments showcasing selected works of artists and designers, that explore the creative friction between cutting-edge science, artistic expressions, and societal discourses. Developed in partnership with Wissenschaft im Dialog (WiD) and supported by Johanenlies.
