More work from Karl Oskar’s new artist René Schoemakers.

“René Schoemakers is a painter with his feet planted firmly in the 21st century, and a lengthy shadow that stretches far back into art history. His crystal clear brushstrokes capture the melancholic present — illuminated by its characteristically cold, blinding light — adorned with a wealth of symbolism from the past.” Amrita Dhillon

It is with great sadness that we mourn the death of
John Brown.
1953-2020

A truly great painter

“Painting is a way to glimpse the changes in things, as they grow up, decay, disappear. It is a way to be alive, to practice active resistance to the notion that there is order and intelligence in the universe. A way to recognize – a way to keep reminding myself, to insist – that there are things other than culture operating in the formation of the self. My colours are often faded, which enables the paintings to be seen in continuity with nature, which also fades and dies and ceases to be. Biology, sexuality and painting bear witness to the decline at the heart of existence.
When I was a younger man, I was obsessed with the body and death. Hence, my interest in Francis Bacon and other painters of his sort. Now, I think I have said everything about the body thatI need to say, and the focus of my work is much more formal. Or perhaps I am just more calm, living, as I do, in the body of a man over fifty, free, at least a little, of some passions of my younger years. I don’t know. But there is one thing I do know: that my hidden body, older now, is still in the work, disclosing and closing, opening and shutting in the marks I make.”

Nina Rodin Category of Near Infinite Permutations II, 2019 Giclée printed washi paper, entomology pins, 160 x 160 x 9 cm

in this second collection of 1000 origami butterflies, rodin has printed one thousand of her archive of photos of marks by other artists and by herself onto Japanese Washi pa- per. again, the possible permutations of colours and marks seem near-infinite. the dizzying swarm echoes the com- plexity of the human mind which so mesmerises rodin. She likes to remind us that the number of states the human mind can be in exceeds the number of particles in the uni- verse. the spiral tries to bring order to the chaos but never solves the system.

Nina Rodin,
After the Party, 2020
Installation and Kimono with Forestry Tape

Flagging tape is predominantly use in forestry - whether for logging or for scientific studies - and the alluring colours are designed for maximum contrast. nina rodin first en- countered a piece of pink flagging tape deep in the Peru- vian amazon forest. like a pink cheap plastic brush stroke hanging in mid-air, it was both attractive and repulsive. rodin identifies with the traditional geisha: a highly edu-cated artist, often shrewd conversationalist and sometimes an influential political commentators but most commonly misunderstood as simply being for sale. every tree is lovingly identified and counted in a dutch man-made forest. in the gallery, the trees have been entirely replaced by plastic. Flagging tape is also used to triage bodies after natural disasters.

Self Portrait with Two failed Projects, 2018
Acrylic on Canvas
91.5 x 117.5 cm

This painting features Rodin wrapped in two failed projects. the first, a 270 Sonobe unit origami polygon, the second a crochet blanket made using systematic combinations of colour juxtapositions. Both failed; the origami ball couldn’t hold its own weight, and the blanket was meant to be shown with schematic tabular representation of the colour
combination used, which the artist had kept track of using colour pencils on a large sheet of paper. this record was lost when her dog ate the paper. The laborious formal painting is a nod to the classical tradition of the self-portrait.

Karl Oskar Gallery

Founded in May 2018, Karl Oskar Gallery is a contemporary art space with a focus on curation. The gallery is a continuation of Wilde Gallery, which was founded in 2007 in Berlin Mitte. In a five year period the former Gallery produced 30 exhibitions and participated in 17 International Art Fairs. Karl Oskar Gallery continues the legacy of Wilde Gallery, seeking to explore painterliness in all media.

The gallery's emphasis on curation means that each show will be conceived based on specific thematic criteria. The gallery is also proud to host guest curators as part of its program.

Karl Oskar features the work of artists at all stages in their careers. Some artists at the gallery have taken part in prestigious international exhibitions and biennials, and whose work may be found in renowned private and public collections.

A important aspect of Karl Oskar Gallery’s work will include participating in art fairs at home and abroad.
