***Important Update***
Due to the current pandemic situation in Berlin, we have decided to update our opening hours — and will be open by appointment only.
Jann Holstein’s solo exhibition “EMERGENZ” will be on view until the 15th of December. Please reach out to us and book an appointment to view the show!
.
EMERGENZ is a solo exhibition by Jann Holstein featuring a series of paintings that deal with the subject of myths, stories and conspiracy theories. The title refers to emergence theory (attributed originally to Aristotle), which describes the dynamic quality of systems whose elements, through their interactions, generate entirely new structures. Our collective capacity for meaning-making may be described as an emergent process through which narratives emerge from snippets of history and memory. In his work, Jann Holstein explores the possibilities of new meanings that emerge from the gaps and empty spaces in our stories.

René Schoemakers is a painter with his feet planted firmly in the 21st century, and a curious gaze that stretches far back into art history. His crystal clear brushstrokes capture the melancholic present — illuminated by its characteristically cold, blinding light — adorned with a wealth of symbolism from the past. His solo exhibition at Karl Oskar Gallery — titled ‘Weltgeist/Ortsgeist’ — is a relatively small exhibition, yet one that deals with big ideas.

Mon(t) Liban, 2014
Oil on Linen

Emile Kirsch
Nature is speaking - The Unfinishing of a Painting, 2016
Ink on plastic sheeting
229 x 330cm
Emile Kirsch’s aptly titled Nature is Speaking - The Unfinishing of a Painting (2016), is a foreshadowing of this destiny. The abstract green mass, reminiscent of a lush forest, is set against a background of pale, smoke-like blooms that surround it.

Nina Rodin
Proscenium, 2019
Glicee print on dibond, 30 x 42,cm
Nina Rodin’s Proscenium (2019), is a photograph of a forest installation featuring a curtain constructed from flagging tape — a type of tape used for marking trees to be felled. The tape, with its aesthetically pleasing colours and morbid function, speaks to the thoughtless destruction of forests that continue to feed a pattern of consumption which has become entirely untenable.

Claudia Rega’s jungle palette. Petrichor (2021), with its olive greens and deep yellows with flashes of pink, might as well be a chronicle of life at the lower reaches of a great rainforest.

Founded in May 2018, Karl Oskar Gallery is a contemporary art space with a focus on curation. The gallery is a continuation of Wilde Gallery, which was founded in 2007 in Berlin Mitte. In a five year period the former Gallery produced 30 exhibitions and participated in 17 International Art Fairs. Karl Oskar Gallery continues the legacy of Wilde Gallery, seeking to explore painterliness in all media.
The gallery's emphasis on curation means that each show will be conceived based on specific thematic criteria. The gallery is also proud to host guest curators as part of its program.
Karl Oskar features the work of artists at all stages in their careers. Some artists at the gallery have taken part in prestigious international exhibitions and biennials, and whose work may be found in renowned private and public collections.
A important aspect of Karl Oskar Gallery’s work will include participating in art fairs at home and abroad.
