Day 24 – Experimental Setup
On view: a selection of photos documenting the performance “Opferbox/Sacrifice Box” by the Austrian artist duo Experimental Setup (Kata Hinterlechner and Bosko Gastager), which took place in December 2019.

A time which was representing the old good ones after this horrifying year of Covid 19. Nobody was thinking a year ago of a world wide pandemic to come, which was spreading dramatically shortly afterwards and comprised our lifes. “Opferbox” may be seen in a new light. An oracle?

All genres are presentwithin their work, from painting and drawing, from collage to object, from lighting installation to kinetic (light) objects to performative narration. This cosmos is a cabinet of curiosities expressing richness of creativity, which refers even physically to its narrative and the appearance of the same. All works are interrelated, together creating a whole: Harmonia. Placed right on the mark, the result is an exciting interplay within their own setting: a gesamtkunstwerk, the individual protagonists of which may also be separated (by purchase), as they are charged each with their own beauty and narrative.

Day 24 – Hitomi Uchikura

When entering the exhibition space, the large five-part work should be installed on the left (measuring 200 x 114 cm) and on the opposite wall a group of small-format works. All are made of strong paper. Only the pictorial vision of the artist, a scalpel and the physical force on paper are required, and in day-long sessions Hitomi Uchikura’s paper works arise, all of them titled Lumière.

These are structures staged in front of the wall in an optical state of suspense, comprising an abundance/a sea of circular medallions of different sizes, with the negative spaces between the discs cut out. The concave medallion discs are pressed with force into the base of the paper, thus forming a relief. When taking a longer look on this relief, the effect is suddenly reversed: the backgrounded concave discs become foregrounded three-dimensional convex shapes, thus emphasizing the momentum of lightness and floating, which is already created by staging the work in front of a wall.

Many visual breaks appear suddenly, yet without spreading chaos or a sense of unrest, on the contrary: through the concentration of forms, finely tuned to each other, the viewer is tempted to pause. The artwork becomes a meditation screen, a meditation relief. The cut-out negative spaces appear dark, providing a view behind these structures onto the shaded room in front of the wall. However, when a light source is installed below the paper web, this interspace is lighted as well, reinforcing the floating effect of the concave or convex discs. The background begins to light up: lumière!

Day 23 – Royden Watson
On view: “Three”, 2012, 71 x 71 cm, oil on fiberboard = 4.200 EUR

Intrinsic to all of Watson’s work is a persistent questioning the mechanisms by which viewers process visual information. The implication is that wholly understanding painterly imagery is not as simple as it may initially appear. Contradictory spatial illusions function as lures, drawing viewers into complex visual equations in which the precise nature of various shapes and images must be carefully evaluated in order to determine their place within his colorful, highly patterned matrices. Once enticed, the act of viewing Watson’s work becomes a means of considering differences between optical phenomena and the multifaceted cognitive processes that inform our understanding of the perceivable world.

Day 23 – Klaus Steinmann
On view: “Studio Situation 2019

In recent years the artist has concentrated primarily on smaller formats, which enabled him to deal with the constantly reappearing subjects of geometry, the basic forms of the square, the triangle and the circle on a daily basis in his studio-apartments in Berlin or Walsrode. In doing so, he is caught between his own experience from the high time of Concrete Art and overcoming the strict rules that govern it. With the wink of the eye, this formal strictness is thwarted in order to grow and explore new possibilities and their limits. This is achieved in a subtle and refreshing manner. The artist sets up little obstacles in order to bypass the smooth and predictable: canvas or coarse cloth is mounted onto a wooden panel, mostly thin birch plywood boards. The texture of the material is evident, reminiscent of canvas, yet through the use of plywood the flat surface becomes sculptural in such a way that, for example, a monochrome square or vertical rectangle, through intentional sawing open of this form from the canvas plane, is tilted forward and its counterpart, the other half, is backgrounded. Thus, an amazing interplay between front and back is created, clearing the path for another gained player on the stage of the artist’s painting: the shadow, which can open up the strict geometry of painted forms, subtly modulating these. At the same time, the projecting edges are visually raised when the light falls onto them, because in these places the white colour shines even whiter than the rest of the white backround. The entire panel painting is subtly and playfully animated.

Day 22 – Harald Kohlmetz
On view: “Kopf 022015“, 80 x 80 cm, oil on canvas = 2.900 EUR

The Image of Man
In our modern time of fast glances, where pictures are breathing down one another's necks only to be quoted by the next ones, and where the origin of everything is just a muddle, where the becoming marks the end as well as the end's denoting everything and nothing at the same time, when no image is sufficient unto itself, but has to become a perpetuum mobile fragile, one painter, Harald Kohlmetz, has the pluck to tackle the unfathomable, the image of man.
Here, there is nothing to divert us from the essential. A lifesize painting figure hovering statuelike in nothingness confronts us standing fast on groundless ground.
The corupt and hasty glance is fingering the oblong for reliable structures to suggest support. But there is nothing except a picture of man, at once banal and of terrifying impact.
Our glance gets caught in his eyes, tries to take his measurements, wanders across his face, the arms and hands and down to the shod feet, then back over the body, clad symply in trousers and a white shirt, then on again to the head and the eyes, still feeling a stranger and lacking support.
Our eye wanders on. Our glance explores face, failing while it wishes to capture the eye, then tries to understand the thick layers of paint, wants a definition of the eyes, the nose, and the mouth – they are anatomically correct, but elusive – , it hurries through the picture in search of relief, becomes quicker in its movements up and down and across, being chased and seeking shelter on the familiar wall that surrounds the painting space – oh, give it up.
And back again. Our glance does not want to surrender, it finds and the same doesn't, remains seeing an unseeing. These are the eye-moments of seeing and being seen. Who are you, human being? Who am I? We see the image of man, a thousand glances, sufficient unto themselves, self-sufficient, self-reliant, unfathomable. Classic.

Day 22 – Susanne Pomrehn
On view: “In Between“, Nietzsche-Dokumentationszentrum Naumburg, 2015, size variable, (photo cuts/installation, each c-print: 50 x 75 cm, image source: portrait photographs between 1873 – 1899, Klassikarchiv Weimar)

Our Story

The gallery Semjon Contemporary s|c, founded by Semjon H. N. Semjon in 2011 in Berlin, represents German and international artists from different genres, as i.e. painting, sculpture, installation, drawing, photography and video. The gallery’s contemporary program is presented in two separate exhibition spaces: the main showroom as well as the so-called Straßen-Salon for solo exhibitions. They are supplemented by the other Salon cabinets for simultaneous display of works by various artists, the gallery’s resident artists as well as guest artists.

Besides the main focus of representing the gallery’s artists, Semjon Contemporary is also engaged in projects as i.e. the drawing exhibition series Lieber Künstler, zeichne mir!/Dear artist, draw for me!, which addressed the issue of abstraction and figuration with artworks by more than 120 artists (including the majority of the gallery artists), acompanied by two substantial catalogs. Another important project realized by Semjon Contemporary was a substantial retrospective exhibition in 2015 in all gallery rooms presenting works by Ursula Sax. Planned for autumn 2017 the retrospective exhibition, showing photographies and photograms by Gerda Schütte, is already on display. Both retrospective exhibitions were supplemented by a differentiated catalog and a comprehensive photo book (the latter published by Kehrer Verlag).

Furthermore, the gallerist is also interested in expanding the radius of the gallery’s activities and organizing events at other locations, i.e. curating solo or group exhibitions with the gallery’s artists or guest artists. In order to promote the artists’ visibility on the art market, Semjon Contemporary has kept appearing on international art fairs like Preview Berlin 2011 and 2012, Positions Berlin 2015, Art Bodensee from 2013-17, Solo Project (Basel) 2015, Art Rotterdam2016 and Volta NY 2017.

Occasionally, the gallery welcomes the opportunity to undertake an excursion into yet another genre, as with the past Raku exhibition by Cornelia Nagel in November/December 2016, which concentrated on the ceramics by the raku master. Semjon H. N. Semjon, born in 1962, has studied Art History and Classical Archeology as well as Fine Arts with Georg Baselitz. Since 2011 his artistic practice has gradually turned into a long-term artistic sabbatical, which is still continuing.
