A-way, to feel like home.
soap, wood | H 125 x W38 x D38
All began with the announcement of the exhibition “The Gift”, organized by UDK-Berlin in collaboration with HEAD–Genève, which took place at the gallery Schau Fenster. That marked the beginning of my collaboration with Davin Gold Kim. We were in frequent communication, mostly through email exchanges. Through our conversations, I came to understand how much she misses her home in South Korea.
I haven’t been away from my own home for long, but I can feel what she feels. It takes time to begin feeling at home in a new place—to sense its warmth and familiarity, the comfort of one’s own space.
I wanted to offer her a gift—a gesture that might help her feel that warmth again, even just for a moment. So I began thinking about moments of warmth. One memory came to mind: taking a bath. You don’t bathe in just any home, but wherever you do, it brings a sense of warmth, safety, and cleanliness.
My idea began with the material of soap. That soap then transformed into a dove—a symbol of purity, beauty, and simplicity. Takes wing as the spirit of hope, herald of good tidings and emblem of peace. Its cooing, billing, and patterning are homely and companionable. An obliging creature capable of relationships with us, embodying sacred forces with which we have integral bonds.
I also made a fluffy towel, lovingly folded, to accompany this small ritual of renewal.
I would like to thank .jpg for the collaboration, and and for their support.
