Fiona Rae – Row Paintings
Opening reception 5 November, 6–8 pm

Fiona Rae attracted wide attention with her abstract paintings when she participated in the legendary exhibition Freeze in London’s Docklands in 1988. It put her on the map as an early member of the group which became known as the Young British Artists (YBAs), who would revolutionize the British art world and beyond.

The exhibition features historic works from the years 1988 to 1990 that have never before been presented together to the public. They powerfully show that Rae’s distinctive creations, which are rooted in a conceptual engagement with the problems and potential of abstract painting, have remained prominent and seminal contributions to the field up to this day.

"Pavoisé ― travail in situ" - Expositions Daniel Buren

Already in September the president of the French republic, Emmanuel Macron inaugurated Daniel Buren's stunning in situ work "Pavoisé" in the Palais de l'Elysée in Paris.

As an extension of the Palais festival hall, fully restored in 2019, Daniel Buren has reinvented the entire glass roof of the Winter Garden. For classic and transparent checks, he has substituted an alternation of blue, white, red and… striped glass, these bands which have been the major constant in his work for 55 years. A patchwork which, under the rays of the sun, floods the room with colorful geometric patterns, evolving throughout the day, running from the carpet to the walls, reflected by the surrounding mirrors.

Buchmann Galerie is pleased to announce the presentation of three outdoor sculptures by Bettina Pousttchi at FIAC/Hors les Murs in the Jardin des Tuileries. This collaboration between FIAC and the Musée du Louvre is on view from 19 - 24 October.

The sculptures belong to the recent series Vertical Highways, which was shown for the first time at the Berlinische Galerie - Museum of Modern Art Berlin.

The artist creates the sculptures from crash barriers, which she mechanically deforms and joins together to form upright works. The individual crash barriers remain recognizable even in their altered forms, and give an idea of the forces that have acted upon them. The anthropomorphic features and the monochrome colours merge the individual parts into a coherent new form. The vertical orientation of the normally horizontally crash barriers changes the usual spatial order and gives the sculptures an architectural reference. In the sequential use of the inceptive object lies a conceptual connection to Minimal Art and also a reference to the Readymades of Marcel Duchamp.

Bettina Pousttchi | Mies in Mind: Suspended Seagram

Exhibition on the occasion of the reopening of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin

Opening times:
Friday, 20 August, 11 am–7 pm
Saturday, 21 August, 10 am–7 pm
Sunday, 22 August, 10 am–6 pm

This Sunday, after a six-year renovation phase, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, built by Mies van der Rohe, an icon of post-war architecture and one of the most important exhibition houses of Western modernism, will reopen.

Mies in Mind is an exhibition parcours from 20.–22.08.2021 on the occasion of this reopening.

Suspended Mies was the title of an exhibition by Bettina Pousttchi at The Arts Club of Chicago in 2017. On that occasion, the artist had developed a site-specific photo installation that responded to the work of architect Mies van der Rohe, who designed the famed “floating staircase” at The Arts Club. The installation was comprised of three parts that brought together Mies’s legacy. A large-scale photograph of the Seagram Building in New York printed on textile, extended the length of the entire west gallery; a second suspended work addressed Mansion House Square, Mies’s unbuilt project for London; the third part was The Arts Club’s own physical space with the staircase.

For Mies in Mind the large-scale photograph Suspended Seagram will be reinstalled at Buchmann Galerie Berlin.

It's the last days of our recent group show Reise ans Mittelmeer /
Journey to the Mediterranean Sea, with works by Daniel Buren, Balthasar Burkhard and Jason Martin.

The exibition runs until this Saturday. Working in different media, the artists take the viewers on an associative journey to the sea.

Since Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's stays in Italy between September 1786 and May 1788 and his travel diaries, written between 1813 and 1817, or Johann Gottfried Seume's travels through (Southern) Europe at the beginning of the 19th century and their media treatment in the form of his popular books, the transfiguration of the Mediterranean region north of the Alps has begun. The works in the exhibition create an echo chamber of this European dream, of the often utopian transfigured place of the Mediterranean.

The exhibition invites the viewer to trace the subtle references to this place of longing in the works of the participating artists - although it should remain open whether these are intentional or occur through the interpretation of the viewer.

Daniel Buren's work Westwind consists of 6 narrow long flags, woven with the famous 8.5cm wide white stripes that make the French artist's work unmistakable and with which he revolutionized painting in the late 1960s. Moved by fans, they flutter gently in the wind.

This vent d'ouest becomes figurative in Balthasar Burkhard's photographic work Himmel (Sky): darkly brooding clouds cover the entire picture surface. Without a horizon line and working with strong contrasts of bright white to dark black, Burkhard brings the work to the edge of legibility.
The second work is a wave dissolving in the spray. Sibylline in their ambivalence toward the sea and nature, these black-and-white photographs on baryta paper by the Swiss photographer, who died in 2010, have an air of serenity. The image of sea spray in coarse-grained black and white is reminiscent of Gustave Courbet's paintings of breaking waves, such as Die Woge (The Wave) from 1869 in the Städel collection. Here, the natural force of the sea appears, which, for all its idyll, also harbors danger.

With their refined colors, sensual textures, and confident facture, the polychrome works of the British painter Jason Martin, who has studios in London and Portugal, appear at first to reflect mainly on painting itself. The surface of the painting Untitled (Mixed white/Brilliant yellow deep/Caribbean blue) was treated by the artist with custom-made brushes in such a way that the spatial impression of a wave may be created. Together with the delicate works on paper, whose colors evoke the water, the sand and the blazing sun, a tableau of the manifold sensual impressions of the Mediterranean Sea opens up.

With generous support by Stiftung Kunstfonds / Neustart Kultur.

We are very pleased that the upcoming publication Fiona Rae - Row Paintings is featured in the publisher preview of DCV publishing house. Release date is September 2021.

Fiona Rae attracted wide attention with her abstract paintings when she participated in the legendary exhibition Freeze in London’s Docklands in 1988. It put her on the map as an early member of the group which became known as the Young British Artists (YBAs), who would revolutionize the British art world and beyond.

The upcoming catalogue, edited by the Buchmann Galerie, is the first to feature the most important works of Fiona Rae from this period: the Row Paintings, which mark the inception of the artist’s internationally acclaimed oeuvre. An essay by Terry R. Myers offers an appraisal of the Row Paintings’ significance in their historic context as well as within the contemporary discourse of painting.

There will be an exhibition covering this important body of work by Fiona Rae in the Buchmann Galerie this fall, the book will accompany this exhibition.
