CICAE - Arthouse Cinema

CICAE - Arthouse Cinema CICAE
Confédération Internationale des Cinémas d'Art et Essai
International Confederation of Arth cinema enthusiasts.

Since 1955, the CICAE has been working to promote cultural diversity in cinemas and festivals. The CICAE was founded in 1955 by the national arthouse cinema associations of Germany, France, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The collective and concerted action of these pioneers led to the emergence in each country of a real market for quality films, as well as national schemes aimed at supporting theatres that took a stand in favour of this "high-risk" cinematographic art form. The CICAE is recognized by the council of Europe, sits on the Bureau of the International Council for Film Television and Audiovisual Communication (IFTC) UNESCO, is a member of Media Salles, and has been a member of the Coalition française pour la diversité culturelle since its inception in 2003. It collaborates with Europa Cinemas, receives support from UNESCO, the European Union's MEDIA programme, the CNC (France), the FFA (Germany), the DGC (Italy), to name but a few. Today, the CICAE brings together over 4,000 screens via 11 national and regional associations (AFCAE in France, AG Kino Gilde in Germany, Schweizer Studiofilm Verband in Switzerland, FICE and AIACE in Italy, Art Mozi in Hungary, VAC in Belgium, Riksföreningen Biograferna in Sweden, Vereniging Nederlands Filmtheater Overleg in the Netherlands, AQCAE in Quebec Canada, NAAS in arabic countries), about 60 independent cinemas across the world, 14 festivals (including Berlin, Cannes, Sarajevo, Annecy, Hamburg, Sevilla, ...), as well as a number of arthouse film distributors, cinema organisations and special members (such as Solar Cinema Netherlands and Art & Experience in Iran). Objectives:
- To encourage arthouse cinemas to come together under a common umbrella at the national and international levels.
- To obtain support for arthouse films from government bodies.
- To foster the distribution of high quality films from all countries, in all countries.
- Through targeted cultural initiatives, to promote the screening of art films in order to increase audiences and foster production. In countries where the art cinema sector is well developed, arthouse films account for 10 to 25 percent of all tickets sold. Art cinema upholds the values of "quality cinema that knows no borders", although, de facto, the bulk is made up of European productions and co-productions. Statistics show that in several countries arthouse cinemas draw up to 80 percent of audiences for quality European films; they are also the most appropriate setting where moviegoers can discover African, Asian, Latin American and "independent" films from the USA. Thus the arthouse cinema industry is (also) a market, which connects quality films with their main "consumers", i.e.

Kinda chic to participate at the Arthouse Cinema Training! ✨

It’s been exactly a month since we spent seven days in Berlin talking, learning, debating, watching films, building cinema projects, and, most importantly, connecting with people from all over the world who share a love for arthouse cinema. 🎬🌍

58 participants, 25 countries, 30 trainers, many learnings, countless conversations, new friendships and way too many cinema-related thoughts to fit into one week.

From programming and audience development to AI, sustainability, inclusion, cinema spaces and everything in between — we explored all the possibilities that arthouse cinema brings with it.

And just like that, our participants are now part of a 1,000+ strong global alumni network. 🫶

Still thinking about this one. Until next time!

🏆 The CICAE Arthouse Cinema Award at the 22nd CineFest Miskolc International Film Festival goes to “Too Many Beasts” by Sarah Arnold!

The jury was captivated by this bold and original debut, which blends crime comedy, neo-noir and surrealism into a darkly humorous exploration of power, class, corruption, mental health and gender roles.

With its unpredictable narrative and distinctive visual language, Too Many Beasts turns a rural community into a compelling reflection of wider social tensions - while never losing its playful and entertaining spirit.

Congratulations to Sarah Arnold and the entire team behind “Too many beasts” ✨

The is underway! 🎬

Around 200 decision-makers from politics, film, television and games have gathered at the Fondation Maeght to discuss an ambitious question: what role will the moving image play in the decades ahead?

CICAE President Christian Bräuer is honoured to bring the collective experience of more than 2,400 arthouse cinemas across 45 countries to the conversation.

At a time when AI is raising questions about authorship and consent, distribution is fragmenting and audiences’ attention is increasingly captured by algorithms, arthouse cinemas continue to do essential work: finding films for audiences, supporting talent, developing communities and creating the shared experience that cinema offers.

It is through collaboration and collective action that arthouse cinemas can bring their voice to this conversation.
✨
A special thank you to the 🎬 Centre national du cinéma and especially Gaëtan Bruel, Vincent Florant, Olivier Henrard and Jérémie Kessler, for bringing this important gathering together.

🏆 The CICAЕ Arthouse Cinema Award at the 32nd Sarajevo Film Festival goes to “Everytime” by Sandra Wollner.

Our jury was deeply impressed by the film’s poetic and distinctive approach to grief and loss, as well as its ability to create a space for reflection beyond words. A beautiful and deeply human work with the power to connect audiences across generations and borders.

Congratulations to Sandra Wollner Woellner and the team behind “Everytime” and a huge thank you to our wonderful jury ✨
