Die Privatsammlung zeitgenössischer Kunst von Heiner Wemhöner wird ab Sommer 2025 in einem ehemaligen Ballhaus in Berlin, saniert von David Chipperfield Architects, sowie in einem modernen Schaudepot in Herford der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht.

Stella Hamberg’s monumental bronze ‚Das ist das‘ (2015), its predator’s jaws gaping wide, has a powerful presence in the Schaudepot’s exhibition space. In dialogue with Monica Bonvicini’s mirror work ‚Silence‘ and bronze axe (both 2022), it brings the tensions between power and vulnerability, threat and exposure into focus.

The dictum POWER IS FRAGILE brings together the ambiguity of vulnerability and strength — a tension that runs throughout the exhibition. Nasan Tur’s woodcut Power is fragile (2016) marks its programmatic starting point.

In Diamonds, 1.20 ct (2018), a diamond has been shattered into thousands of fragments. Suspended against a deep black background, they appear almost like a constellation. A symbol of wealth, permanence and strength is transformed into an image of rupture and vulnerability.

Michael Sailstorfer transforms a tree into a rocket, launching it from the ground with compressed air. The diptych „Raketenbaum (Rocket Tree)“ captures two states: the tree firmly rooted in place and, moments later, suspended in flight.
Sailstorfer turns something deeply rooted into a rocket – a poetic, absurd and at the same time violent image of an attempt to reverse the inherent qualities of an object.

Based on historical photographs of Wilhelm Darges and Karl Dönitz standing before Adolf Hi**er, Andreas Mühe restages their postures with two n**e actors.
Without uniforms or insignia, their tense bodies show how power takes shape through learned gestures of discipline and submission—and how fragile its hierarchies can be.

A glimpse inside the storage building of .
The Schaudepot comprises two cubic volumes: one dedicated to storing the collection, with pull-out racks for paintings and photographs as well as designated areas for sculptures; the other presents changing exhibitions offering insights into the Wemhöner Collection.
Currently on view: POWER IS FRAGILE.

The exhibition building is open every Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm. The storage building can be visited by appointment.

In front of Marta Herford stands Paolo Chiasera’s Tupac Project (2005), a monument to rapper Tupac Shakur, who was killed in 1996 at the age of 25. Its high concrete pedestal is conceived as a surface for graffiti – connecting the monument to the urban culture from which hip-hop emerged.

The statue has gained renewed attention following the recent conviction of Duane “Keffe D” Davis for his role in Tupac Shakur’s murder.

Originally part of the Wemhöner Collection, the sculpture was donated to Marta Herford by Heiner Wemhöner in 2024. A gouache study remains in the Wemhöner Collection.

A red neon outline traces the silhouette of a fighter jet. Developed in former Yugoslavia, the aircraft was named Jastreb, meaning „hawk“ and evoking speed, precision and predatory power.
In her work, British artist Fiona Banner explores military power, war and violence. Reduced to a fragile line of light, the fighter jet oscillates between fascination and threat.

Calm, direct gazes, tattoos, piercings and individual forms of self-expression define the five portraits. Together, they unfold a striking collective presence, exploring questions of identity, individuality and belonging.

The men portrayed are doormen at Berlin’s legendary Berghain club. Sven Marquardt, internationally known as a photographer and longtime Berghain doorman himself, adds another layer of meaning to Rudel: power manifests itself in the authority to decide who belongs and who remains outside. The work reflects on mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion – and on who gets to determine belonging.
