after practicing tattooing for a while i stopped to think of it as adding something to a body. it feels closer to uncovering, as if the mark were already there, under the skin, and the needle only found it. and what was there before was revealed.

people have marked themselves for as long as there have been people. not for decoration, or not only: for protection, for belonging, for grief, for the crossing from one state of life into another and many other reasons. a body keeps a record whether or not you ask it to. ink just makes the record visible, the way a scar does too, only this one was chosen.

archaeology doesn’t invent what it finds. it removes what was covering it. i started to think tattooing works the same way, and that this is one of the oldest things we do: look for ourselves by making the invisible visible. that’s why i am interested in symbols, because they have this strange ability to uncover something that words often can’t. not the answers, but layers

It is meticulously hand-sewn in Odesa, Ukraine, during wartime by a single artisan. The hoodie is equipped with two pockets on the sides.
