Due to the new COVID status of Berlin, we will not be hosting the Democrats Abroad Phone Banking session this Sunday. Please check their website for remote options.

As we have said before, Exgirlfriend will remain closed as an exhibition space to the public until 2021 or until we have a more solid grasp on the future of COVID and public safety. Thank you.

*2020 Exgirlfriend Update*

Our current exhibition, "Slender Axes" is still open until October, so please be sure to schedule your appointment to visit us with works by Fiona Valentine Thomann, Constance Tenvik, and Melika Shafahi.

"Slender Axes" will mark the last exhibition organized by Exgirlfriend for this calendar year, a year wrought with difficulty for our entire community. We plan to take this time to focus entirely on producing the 2021/2022/2023 seasons, curating our strongest and most impactful exhibitions to date with thoughtfulness and intentionality. Exgirlfriend will not be accepting new proposals from this point forward and for the foreseeable future as we have a backlog of proposals from which a full season will be curated.

That being said, we find it unproductive to leave the gallery space empty and unused For the rest of 2020, therefore we would like to offer our space as an affordable option for action, presentation, production, and discussion. If you are interested, please send an email directly to [email protected]

Stay tuned for any scheduled open hours to see Slender Axes in the next weeks.

as well as a few odds and ends things that may come up during the event (printing more maps etc.)

All volunteers will be given a vegan meal from eatyourbohnen, 2 free drinks, and a symbolic fee of 40 euros. If you can help us out, please write an email to [email protected].

Mark your calendars — September 13th end your night with us! Dozens of artist studios, food, music, print sale, good vibes. RSVP link in bio @exgirlfriendberlin

Check out one of Exgirlfriend's season 2019/2020 curators, Georgie Pope in this podcast episode with Michael Dooney here: "Fellow Australian Georgie Pope is the latest guest on my podcast Subtext & Discourse. You can hear Georgie speaking about her beginnings in rural Goulburn and Sydney before ultimately relocating to Berlin. Discovering her own path to curating through (among other experiences) her role as art mediator at the Boros Collection / Bunker Berlin, participating in the intensive Curatorial Studies Venice and most recently joining the team at Independent Collectors. Somehow she still manages to find time for her own projects which focus on audience engagement and 'activation' of art works, which you may have already experienced last year at Exgirlfriend Gallery. Links to the podcast in the post below, otherwise just search for Subtext & Discourse on your preferred podcast streaming service."

Georgie Pope is a Berlin based curator who started her career working at commercial galleries and project spaces in Sydney, Australia. She is currently a curator for Independent Collectors, a digital platform for art collectors and the largest non-commercial archive of private collections worldwide. Georgie also works as art mediator at The Boros Collection / Bunker Berlin, a heritage listed World War II air-raid shelter and home to Karen and Christian Boros private collection of contemporary art.

Completing the Curatorial Practice and Contemporary Arts course at the School for Curatorial Studies Venice in 2018 consolidated her previous art world experiences. This enabled her individual curatorial interests to become more focused on activation of art works; whether through education, presentation or other forms of audience engagement. Leading to an increased involvement with preformative art and the opportunities this experiential medium provides - not least of which includes the increased interest from art collectors who wish to support and be more involved in this recently institutionalised part of the art world and relative newcomer to the art market.

Interview with Georgina Pope recorded by Michael Dooney on 12. May 2020 in Kreuzberg, Berlin.

Due to COVID and not unlike many other similar institutions, Exgirlfriend has had to postpone or cancel most of our programming for this summer. With that being said, we are determined to survive this crisis— "survival" a theme that coincidentally coincides with what would have been our current exhibition, "Wetlands" with works by Marius Presterud. @osloapiary. Working in the overlap between art and eco-systemic change, Presterud calls his activities/artistic endeavours "services", suggesting a consolidating/assimilating, non-reactionary stance to current issues. Just as organisms don’t recognize the term unusable, society does not recognize the non-participatory. "Wetlands" has been rescheduled for Spring 2021. All images courtesy of the artist. @ Exgirlfriend

We are so utterly sad to say that we must postpone our next exhibition, "ambitopia" until after we can guarantee the health and safety of not only the public, but our artists and staff. Please follow us on Instagram for updates and please stay healthy.

See you on the other side!

🏳️Anyone who has been to our new location will tell you that the entrance is a little hard to find the first time. In order to have a covered patio we chose to use our Hof as a main entrance. In about 6-8 weeks, that should no longer be a problem. A 3 meter wide lit EXG sign will soon light your path 🏳️

Our next exhibition "Valume" features works by @alexlovesworking @margritbarner & @markwalkermark opens Friday at 7pm

"Valume" is a phonetic play on the prescription drug Valium, aka Diazepam, which is administered or taken to produce a calming effect in the user, and a visual play on the word “value”, as value is given and taken away to all elements in our lives resulting in its own forms of violence.

We look forward to seeing you there
