This one is easy, right? Which one is the digital sculpture and which is the physical sculpture?

The first NFT by Katharina Grosse is available in a limited (due to the 24 hours) edition until today, Sunday, at 6 PM CEST. We sold 80 NFTs so far.

NUMBER ONE is a free floating sculpture in space you can interact with. The collectors of the NFT receive an interactive 3D model of the sculpture, a video of the experience and the code (HTML) of the interactive experience stored on IPFS in a ZIP file. With this edition, the collectors support the Friends of Nationalgalerie with the dedicated purpose to acquire the sculpture and a painting by Grosse. While the physical sculpture will be part of the collection of the museum, the digital sculpture can be owned by anyone.

📲 Please visit www.nftgrosse.misa.art to see it: https://nftgrosse.misa.art/

To create the interactive immersive experience, the bronze sculpture was scanned that was part of Grosse’s iconic solo show IT WASN’T US at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.

Her exhibition, a kaleidoscopic painting brought together colours and forms, natural and man-made surroundings, and its visitors as participants in an all-encompassing, pulsating interaction of hues. As a pictorial ground for her work the artist has used the floor of the museum, the façade of the Rieckhallen as well as Styrofoam elements, which were shaped and scaled to their ultimate dimensions in several steps. Now the viewers themselves can scale the digital sculpture and explore its shape from all angles. The underlying sound loop amplifying the movement and shatter of the sculpture was composed by the artist and Stefan Schneider.

Grosse frees herself from object boundaries and hierarchies opening ever new perspectives on the possibilities of painting. Now, with NUMBER ONE, she leaves the physical space and enters the digital realm to explore new ways of combining visual and sound elements.

#KönigArtists: The solo show IN ABWESENHEIT (IN ABSENCE) by Alicja Kwade at Berlinische Galerie is now open.

The work of Kwade is inspired by scientific, philosophical and social enquiry. She engages in her sculptures with models and constructs that inform our perceptions of reality, questioning the potential for subjective and objective knowledge.

IN ABWESENHEIT (IN ABSENCE) is founded on recent works by Kwade that might in a broad sense be read as self-portraits. The artist explores how a person and their physical presence in space can be described from various methodological perspectives.

The work SELF-PORTRAIT consists of 24 glass ampoules containing, in pure form, the chemical elements that make up the human body. There is a large installation based on the artist’s fully sequenced DNA, printed out on 314,000 pages of paper. The human genome in the digital era is also the theme of the bronze stelae: here the artist has shaped numerous overlapping smartphones into a double helix.

The central piece locates an individual physically in time and space. A ring of black steel in the middle of the hall reaches almost to the ceiling. 24 loudspeakers have been mounted on it and transmit the artist’s heartbeat into the exhibition room.

Kwade’s site-specific installation in the first big exhibition hall is the latest addition to the successful format devoted by the Berlinische Galerie to in-situ projects by contemporary artists working in this city.

💥 Big news! Katharina Grosse will drop her first NFT this week. The 24 HOUR NFT DROP will go live on Saturday, September 18 at 6 PM CEST. It’s a limited edition that will be exclusively available on misa.art for 24 hours ($ 999,-). We’ll share more news on the drop over the next couple of days with you!

The NFT is based on Grosse’s iconic solo exhibition IT WASN’T US that was on view at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin earlier this year. It disregarded the boundaries of the museum space in a grand and colourful gesture.

Over the course of several weeks a vast new painting has emerged that stretched across the Historic Hall and into public space, over the extensive grounds behind the museum, landing finally on the façade of the so-called Rieckhallen which were inaugurated as a part of the museum complex in 2004.

Grosse’s kaleidoscopic painting brought together colours and forms, natural and man-made surroundings, and its visitors as participants in an all-encompassing, pulsating interaction of hues. The boundaries between objects, and between horizontal and vertical orientations began to melt away, and the work’s scale continuously shifted depending on the visitor’s position. As the viewer moved through the painting new spaces emerged that are both artificial and ripe with associations, and at the same time completely real, forcing us to renegotiate our habitual ways of seeing, of thinking about, and of perceiving the world around us.

#KönigExhibitions: With UNEARTHED, KÖNIG GALERIE presents Daniel Arsham‘s first solo exhibition in Berlin. On display are three monumental paintings and a series of sculptures that give the impression that antiquity has been excavated in the future.

Arsham transforms the nave of the former brutalist Church of St. Agnes into a hall of antiquities in front of rocky grotto worlds. The paintings show monumental sculptures that grow upwards in light-flooded caves. The busts are lined up on pedestals, as if the first collection of antiquities had just been opened to the public. As in the past, reproductions were used here to build up such a collection.

Daniel Arsham selected the pieces, he made the reproductions, which are actually reinterpretations made from volcanic ash and quartz crystals, among other things. Apollo, Venus, Caesar. Broken, dilapidated, eroded. Statues and statuettes. Busts and full body figures.

Otherwise known for turning iconic objects and figures of the media age like Blackberries and Pokémon into future relics of fictional archaeology, Arsham actually goes back thousands of years in history. The sculptures are well-known from antiquity. The allegory of the cave is familiar from philosophy. And yet nothing is as you know it. Instead of the shackled people, the ancient artefacts stand in the cave as if they were waiting to be discovered. The light is behind or above them and shines down on them, blinds and illuminates them. The people, tiny, stand before them like shadowy beings. They are the modern explorers who hope for archaic knowledge from the monumental sculptures. Arsham’s antiquity promises knowledge of the future in the present.

#KönigExhibitions: With UNEARTHED, KÖNIG GALERIE presents Daniel Arsham's first solo exhibition in Berlin. On display are three monumental paintings and a series of sculptures that give the impression that antiquity has been unearthed in the future.

New York based artist Daniel Arsham straddles the line between art, architecture and performance. Raised in Miami, Arsham attended the Cooper Union in New York City where he received the Gelman Trust Fellowship Award in 2003. Architecture is a prevalent subject throughout his work; environments with eroded walls and stairs going nowhere, landscapes where nature overrides structures, and a general sense of playfulness within existing architecture.

Arsham’s work has been shown at PS1 in New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, The Athens Bienniale in Athens, Greece, The New Museum In New York, Mills College Art Museum in Oakland, California and Carré d’Art de Nîmes, France among others. A first monograph of Arsham’s work was published by the French Centre National des arts plastiques.

Our Story

KÖNIG GALERIE was founded in Berlin by Johann König in 2002, and currently represents 38 international emerging and established artists, mostly belonging to a younger generation. The program’s focus is on interdisciplinary, concept-oriented and space-based approaches in a variety of media including sculpture, video, sound, painting, printmaking, photography and performance. From 2006, the gallery was located in a former industrial building on Dessauerstraße after moving from its original location at the Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz across from the Volksbühne. In May 2015, KÖNIG GALERIE took up St. Agnes, a monumental former church built in the 1960s in the Brutalist style, where large-scale exhibitions take place in two different spaces, the former chapel and nave. The church was built by Werner Düttmann, an architect and Berlins director of urban development from 1960 to 1966. The renovations were realized by renowned architect Arno Brandlhuber. Since October 2017 KÖNIG GALERIE runs KÖNIG London. A space for individual and site specific artist presentations. KÖNIG GALERIE participates in international art fairs such as Art Basel, Frieze Art Fair, London, FIAC, Paris and Art Basel Miami Beach. The gallery has successfully placed works in a variety of private and public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Guggenheim Foundation. The artists represented have solo exhibitions with institutions worldwide, and regularly partake in prestigious group exhibitions, such as Documenta and the biennials in Venice, Berlin, New York and others. They have been awarded many important prizes, commissions and outdoor projects.
