UMAMI UMAMI UMAMI marks Wiola Stankiewicz’s return to the place where her fascination with collage began. Years ago, Piotr Mordel gave her a notebook he had assembled from different papers from a now-closed paper factory. Intended for sketches, it already felt like a collage in itself. Stankiewicz began filling its pages with collages.
Since then, collage has developed alongside her painting practice. In this exhibition, painting, collage and assemblage meet and merge. Collage becomes more than a technique: it becomes a way of constructing images and looking at the world.
Stankiewicz begins with selection — choosing images, objects, colours and surfaces that evoke pleasure, curiosity or a difficult-to-explain desire. She studies the relationships between them and decides which should stay and which should meet. Umami appears when their combination produces something none of the elements holds separately: a quiet, sensual, slightly weird feeling of completeness.
The second part of the evening belongs to Antonio Bastos, a Portuguese artist and producer whose music blends electronic sound with jazz sensibilities and traditional roots. Guided by his motto, “Time doesn’t exist,” he transforms moments, encounters and lived experiences into songs, which are later developed and refined in the studio.
For his solo concert in Berlin, Antonio will perform a selection of his original material, bringing contemporary beats and sophisticated sound design together in a distinct organic-electronic language.
*Umami — from the Japanese umai (“delicious”) and mi (“taste”) — is one of the five basic tastes. The term was coined in 1908 by chemist Kikunae Ikeda
