Art School Berlin

Art School Berlin New Independent Art School in Berlin offering workshops and mentoring from practitioners of all disciplines - by artists for artists.

'The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing. ... I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think” ― Socrates. A modular, freethinking school which mixes practical and theoretical approaches to encourage high-level creative and critical thinking. Our Aims:

- To provide a space for the creation and discussion of art across all mediums.

- To work outside the administrative an

d regulatory boundaries that confine institutional approaches to teaching the applied humanities.

- To provide a platform for high quality teachers, practitioners and speakers from Berlin and internationally.

- To promote the value of face to face learning and to foster an environment of discursive, collaborative education. We understand that learning is a communal experience, which best happens through free conversation between peers and mentors.

- To offer focused career development and mentoring for emerging and mid career artists with experts in the field.

- To focus on the evolution of creative work and thought, rather than certificates, awards and outcomes.

This highly subsidised workshop costs one full pound to attend. Bring a new or revised artist statement, and (in your head) three works you feel are integral to your practice.

Only a few places remaining - book here to secure yours. I look forward to meeting you and your words (again/for the first time).

*In person artist statement writing workshop with Elly Clarke*

A two hour artist statement writing workshop with artist, researcher and educator Elly Clarke. Through collective and independent writing exercises and conversation, we will unlock creative approaches to writing about your work - for applications, websites, proposals and grant applications, and also as a means of exploring and (re)encountering your own working processes from new perspectives.

The workshop is collaborative and participatory, with all attendees strongly encouraged to join in with the collective editing of others' work. Because of this, some time is taken at the beginning of the session to ensure everyone feels as safe as possible, so that the deep, intimate work of writing about art can take place.

Bring a 250-300 word artist statement you already have, to work on. Sharing your statement with the group is encouraged, but not compulsory!

Group will be a minimum of 6 people; max 10. We will take regular breaks.

This workshop is suitable for artists at all stages of their career and for the time being I plan to run this workshop every couple of months. The exercises will be similar but not the same so suitable for returning participants.

I look forward to working with you!

About Elly Clarke

I am an artist, performer, PhD researcher and educator who has been helping artists write about their work for more than four years. This has been mostly through my teaching on the MFA Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London. I have also run workshops for other institutions, including Studio Voltaire; Axisweb; Pratt Institute in New York; The British Council, Spill Festival, and The Place, London. My collaborative writing techniques draw on my drag performance practice alongside a deep engagement with pedagogy and collective forms of learning and thinking together.

Please contact me with any questions you may have about this session and find out more about my work on my website: ellyclarke.com or instagram:

I also offer 1-1 and small group sessions for artists who want to work together. Please contact me if you would like to set one up.

You can find Arbeit Studios, down a short alleyway in our colourful building inbetween JoJo&Flo and Perandori Cafe on Green Lanes, N13 5TT

Happy to be part of this project about shadow banning and online censorship with Stephanie Ballantine, Esben Holk and other fabulous persons. After several stages, it has made it through to the final member judging/voting moment, which is where nGbK Berlin members get to decide on the show/s they'd like to see in the gallery space next year.

If you're a NGBK member you can vote.

Your Shadow Will Not Erase Me is an exhibition and interactive installation exploring the impact of censorship bias on social media, supported by a workshop, panel discussion, and performance event. We are a working group of s*x workers, artists, activists, LGBTQI+ individuals, and researchers; communities disproportionately affected by corporate censorship and state surveillance. From this vantage point we examine digital rights, AI, and censorship highlighting power disparities between social media conglomerates and the wider user base. We propose alternative futures through interactive engagement, targeting both informed and broader audiences to the discussion of digital rights and censorship. A non-traditional mode of curation where the works are selected by relevant organisations such as The Black S*x Workers Collective and Der BesD e.V., conceptualises the project as a platform for diverse marginalised voices.

The exhibition is divided into three parts: „The Shadowland“ displays physically 9 censored online posts from a growing archive, from art to educational with creator commentary. ”The Algorithm“ section exposes workings of AI and algorithms through an interactive software that allows users to categorise and describe the aforementioned censored works. „Substate Illumination“ re-presents originally censored works with the constantly updating public and AI feedback projected over them, illuminating the uncanny nature of machine interpretation.
The workshop provides advice on anonymity and an overview of AI and algorithm control mechanisms. The panel discussion invites experts to discuss censorship, biases, and legal frameworks in Germany and Europe. The performance event artists are invited to reflect on the idea of the ‘substate under digital domination’: the state of having to submit to corporate guidelines while retaining a sense of ownership and control.

SELL YOUR ART ONLINE:
A 4 WEEK HANDS-ON COURSE FOR PROFESSIONAL ARTISTS
There are so many opportunities for artists to sell their work online these days. There is no reason to be limited by location anymore and thanks to the internet you can connect with art buyers across the globe. This is great news for Berlin based artists looking to expand their reach and work independently or alongside traditional career paths.

This four week arts business crash course will give you the tools, knowledge and strategies to start selling your work online straight away in a smart, meaningful way without feeling like you’re selling out. You’ll learn how to build connections with buyers, rather than ‘selling’ to them.

There will be case studies on what works and doesn’t work for independent artists and a lecture by Elly Clarke on Alternative Funding Strategies.
In this in-person group workshop you will have the opportunity to draw on the ideas of your fellow participants, collaborate and connect with other artists on the same path as you.
What You’ll Learn:
• Introduction to business models for artists, particularly the independent artist’s business model
• Introduction to selling prints and originals
• Craft your ‘Unique Value Statement’ so you have a clear picture on what you are really selling as an artist
• Learn how to identify your ideal buyers who will absolutely love your work and what you stand for as an artist.
• Sweet-spot pricing - a method for pricing your work so you never have to wonder if you have your pricing ‘right’ or not
• How to connect with your audience online - from your website to your social media presence to seeking out PR opportunities.
• Overview of online ‘launch’ methods to generate interest in your work without having to shell-out the expensive costs of running a real world exhibition.
• Logistics of selling online - overcome the fear of all ‘that admin stuff’ like postage, invoicing, tax etc.
• Stop blocking sales! Learn how to communicate confidently about your work and pricing so that you can make sales of your work with ease.

We will be doing hands on activities throughout the course so that by the end of the f
