Conducted over three Tuesday evenings, this summer crash course focuses on sculpting a realistic portrait in clay using high-quality photographic references that I’ll provide. Alternatively, you may bring or create your own references of a friend, loved one, or famous person you would like to sculpt.

Not Fourteen, 2025
Clay, to be cast in bronze

While dreaming of more daring, complex work, I found myself tasked with creating an homage to Degas’s 𝘓𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴.
Yet another female figure — I thought in frustration — initially struggling to connect with it conceptually.

I began questioning what a dancer represents today — especially in a world where bodies and performance are constantly framed and consumed through social media. My thoughts drifted back to my own childhood experience with ballet, and the strains it placed on me.

There is something undeniably dark about Degas’s little dancer. I have always felt uneasy looking at this young girl — exposed, self-conscious and voiceless.

Searching for a way forward, I invited my friend, professional ballerina and artist , to pose for me. She was the answer all along. Her strength. Her unconventional mind. Her resilience.

She is not a broken teenager. She knows we are looking at her—and she chooses to meet that gaze, drawing power from it.
