"How so much of the world passes through the pupil and still it holds nothing. The eye, alone in its socket, doesn´t even know there´s another one, just like it, an inch away, just as hungry, as empty. Opening the front door to the first snowfall of my life, you whispered, 'Look'".
- Ocean Vuong

In his autobiographical debut novel „On Earth We´re Briefly Gorgeous“, Ocean Vuong tells us his story, the story of his family, as a chain of moments. As the daughter of an US-american soldier and a vietnamese farmer, Vuong’s mother was born during the Vietnam war. „Thus”, Vuong says, “my mother exists. Thus I exist. Thus no bombs = no family = no me.” The book recalls the war as a personal retelling of a story, though it is a historical document, written in the now.

The artists in this exhibition try something similar. With their artworks, they leave tracs. Traces to themselves, to gain a brief place in time, or traces to a gap and a storyline, that almost disappeared, and now, as we walk by, passes through the pupil and says „Look“.

Cécile B. Evans
At FIAC Paris

Screenings everyday from 2 pm to close!

FIAC PROGRAMMES | Cécile B. Evans’ "A Screen Test for an Adaptation of Giselle" will be shown as part of FIAC’s cycle of artists’ films at the mk2 Grand Palais cinema, continuously every day from 2 pm until closing, today until Saturday. The artist will be present in the cinema for a talk with curator Martha Kirszenbaum at 6pm today. Balmain is proud to play a part in bringing artist Cécile B. Evans’ compelling, modern-day video retelling of the classic French ballet Giselle to the public. In addition to supporting Evans’ "A Screen Test for an Adaptation of Giselle", the house has been happy to lend key historic pieces from Balmain’s archives for her work. Evans re-imagines the iconic original ballet as taking place in the near-future, when Giselle and her friends have left a failed capital city and moved to the rural village of Giselle’s mother, in order to “reset society.” Then, as Evans explains, “their successful community is invaded by an unnamed presence, setting off a contamination of their newly formed ecosystem with old power dynamics. In this version, Giselle’s death serves as an opening to the possibility of mutability and multiplicity as strategies for escape.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Booth 2.B.3. // Sept 12 to 15, 2019 // In 1998, the artist initiated the Land Foundation together with Kamin Lertchaiprasert as an actual experiment in living such a modest life in harmony with nature. Roughly a twenty-minute drive from the northern Thai city of Chang Mai, The Land is located on rice fields abandoned by farmers due to unfavorable weather conditions. The Land is not a place of art in a stricter sense. The Land seeks to spread and promote an open exchange of ideas on art, ecology, economics, and community spirit—fundamental issues especially in a country like Thailand whose economy is largely dependent on tourism. The project is also a field of experimentation regarding ideas of ownership. Nobody owns The Land. Everyone is welcome and can spend time there, collaborating and contributing their ideas. All the multiples presented reference the special living conditions at the Land Foundation: The green synthetic jacket not only transforms into a tent, but also features a map showing the way to the foundation; the solar cooker comes with a Buddhist rice pot and rice grown on site; a prototype of the shower bicycle, which uses pedal power to operate the water pump, is used there; the newest multiple as well, a flag with the inscription HOPE HAS NO RIGHT ANGLES alludes to the ideas behind The Land. // Text by Beate Scheder, Translation by Erik Smith

Almut Heise, Installation View
14/09/2019

Almut Heise, Installation View

Sept 14 to Oct 26, 2019 // The furniture and objects depicted in the work of Almut Heise function like silent placeholders for a long-faded idea of an elegant, bourgeois home or for a dream that perhaps still lives on in the mind but which has seemingly waited an eternity for its grand appearance beyond four small walls. It is a dream of peace, comfort, happiness and security. A dream that will finally be dreamt again in the late fifties and soon be brought back to life. It just does not withstand any disturbances or loud exhales. Artist Almut Heise was born in 1944 in Celle. She grew up in this version of post-war Germany that she so precisely details in lines. Her etchings are thus images of memories. // Text by Carolin Würfel, Translation by Erik Smith
