ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Paloma Proudfoot crafts sculptures, installations, and performances to engage with some of the more sensitive topics of this generation. Her works explore themes of anatomy and identity via various media, including ceramics, textiles, hair, clay and wax.

Rachel Youn builds kinetic sculptures of plastic dollar-store flowers affixed to secondhand-sourced electric massage machines, wildly flailing around in the air, pulled and pushed. The pieces speak to Youn’s intersectional experience growing up as a non-binary Korean-American in the American Midwest.

Oldenburger Kunstverein will present the work of Matthias Dornfeld, opening on 25 November. In his solo show “L’Amour Change Tout”, Dornfeld has assembled for us an eccentric cast, an inventory of warped classical painterly motifs. Replete with every art history reference, his oeuvre takes stock of all visual tropes: the portrait, the landscape, the still life, the abstract.

What binds all of these very disparate works together is the way in which they are painted. The subject is not important, but rather, the approach. Dornfeld employs a technique to access his own subconscious, in an attempt to free himself from all theory and ideology. He abandons all academic pretense, and pivots instead toward a cosmic, unmediated clarity.

Caroline Wong is featured in Plinth Magazine 💜 Read "Feasting with Caroline Wong” at the link in our bio.

"Wong’s Cats and Girls collection, which enticed visitors at Soy Capitán gallery in Berlin throughout October, focuses less on the act of eating and more on the community surrounding it… The women depicted here echo the friendship group Wong forged while living in China. ‘We’d meet up every week and have dinner and drinks and enjoy the food without feeling self-conscious. We’d open up about our lives and just talk about everything,’ she recalls. And the cats? ‘I’m fascinated by the link between femininity and felinity. Different notions of femininity are attached to cats, and they don’t always have the best implications. You think of the lonely cat lady, the spinster, you think of witches, or of Catwoman. There’s that scene in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, where Michelle Pfeiffer transforms from this frumpy cat lady to this sexualised predator in seconds.’” - Madeleine Pollard

Caroline Wong’s Cats and Girls is up at Soy Capitán until 12 November! Visit the gallery Wed-Sat 12-6 PM at Prinzessinnenstraße 29, 10969 Berlin.

Join us today from 6 - 9 PM for the opening of Caroline Wong’s Cats and Girls! See you at Soy Capitán at Prinzessinnenstr. 29
10969 Berlin-Kreuzberg.

Caroline Wong’s pastels of females and felines feasting together force a duality, eliciting a mixture of joy and revulsion, provoking pleasure with disgust. While nauseating, while dizzying, they are cathartic too, life-affirming. Her women: drunken, disheveled, shouting, on the verge of vomiting, spilling sauces, regurgitating soda, bent over the table, splayed out on the bed, kneeling on the floor, slurping, licking, chewing, consuming. We see how warped and uneasy women’s relationship to food is.

The Opening of Caroline Wong’s Cats and Girls is this Friday! See you at Soy Capitán on Friday 16 September from 6-9 PM! We will also be open during Berlin Art Week, 17-18 September from 12-6 PM.

Wong takes up space, fills space and makes space, at a large scale. Themes around femininity, queerness, desire, and the right to female pleasure, pervade her pieces. Saturating each canvas, Wong’s mission is to fill that void, to feel no guilt or shame for taking what one needs and wants. But there is that anxiety too, the need to identify what one needs and wants, and the fear that this process of identification will be harder to achieve than one hoped. By taking control of their bodies and diets themselves, Wong’s women still feel out of control. The works signal a release, but with this release, comes also, a panic.

On view until October 2, Kunstverein Braunschweig presents “The Body is The House, The House is But Haunted”, Eli Cortiñas' first institutional solo show in Germany.

The exhibition, curated by Nuno de Brito Rocha and Benedikt Johannes Seerieder, utilizes video and spatial installations to dissect themes of power, colonialism and female identity. Cortiñas offers a commanding examination of class, education, attribution of ethnicity, age, mobility, and a wide range of other intersections.

Grace Weaver is part of “How (Not) to Fit In – Metaphern der Adoleszenz”, a group show at Villa Merkel in Esslingen, from May 8 to July 17.

Curated by Benedikt Johannes Seerieder, the exhibition is a fresh negotiation with our place and our path in society. In our landscape of constantly shifting social cues, lessons learned in adolescence are oft-utilized in adulthood.

Confronted with injustice, glass ceilings, oppressive lifestyles and outmoded role models, we learn at this crucial moment in time ways in which we can both adapt and emancipate ourselves.

What comes to mind when you think about water?

Scuba diving? Drought? The ocean? The rain? The origin of all life? A basic human right? A peaceful lake? A contaminated river?

Klara Hobza is featured in a group exhibition at Kunsthalle Bielefeld that explores this theme of water. The exhibition, “Dem Wasser Folgen”, has over fifty contributions from international artists, examining the subject of water from cultural, political, economic and ecological perspectives. The show will be up until October 16.

„‘Farewell Information’ cleverly explores themes of spatial navigation and the accessibility of information in a smooth and all-encompassing way. Steinum encourages us to contemplate the processes, interruptions and guides we use to navigate each moment. She does this by inviting us inside a tangible moment of pause, allowing us to walk around its contours and contemplate its meanings from the inside out.“

'Saint Fauxpas‘ by Dirk Lange is on view until October 23!

"In all of Lange’s works, exacting details and compositions within the composition allow viewers to slowly unlock the complexity of meaning. Concise and dense constellations of forms produce a distribution of pictorial centers, each of which function like a picture within a picture, together creating for the eye an almost infinite variety of paths through the whole. As slowly as the works are created, they are also able to hold viewers for a long time, so that they, following their own curiosity, can delve deeper into the riddles of the imagery.“ (Friedrich Hausen)

Lange (b. 1972) draws richly detailed, multilayered works in muted colors and large formats. His dreamlike scenarios present viewers with people or magical, hybrid creatures in the midst of seemingly incomprehensible or paradoxical actions. On closer inspection, a variety of structures then emerge: patterns reminiscent of molecular orders, but also character fonts, geometric or physical shapes resembling celestial bodies. The pictorial narrative is therefore situated between smallest and largest, between micro- and macrocosm. Overlapping, rhythmic details reveal the enigmatic pictorial narrative itself to be part of self-contained ornaments. The depicted action is seemingly less an expression of rational motivation than a result of the inherent movement of cosmic orders. The title of the exhibition, "Saint Fauxpas", imbues the mishap with religious meaning, alluding to a deeper story behind our misguided actions.
