🔴 GTWFeature: For the upcoming edition of Art Cologne next week, we are looking forward to presenting works by Kapwani Kiwanga, Angelika J. Trojnarski, and Anna Witt who we will feature in the next posts.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In her new body of work Angelika J. Trojnarski reflects on her ongoing examinations and past research residencies on wildfires in Greece and Mallorca.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The work is a reaction to the multitude of global and local wildfires, particularly occurring in the last three years, which have reached unprecedented levels with lasting consequences for the earth.
The artist employs the power and materiality of fire by igniting the edges of the paper and enriching it with soot. Thereby the clouds become the cause and effect of the hidden inner fire simultaneously.Through the use of intense bright and warm colors, Trojnarski visualizes the invisible high temperature rising from the glowing soil and vegetation.

🟣 GTWBehind: Take a look behind the scenes in our gallery office, where we currently show Laurel Nakadate's work Longwood Florida #1.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Laurel Nakadate works with video, film, and photography to capture her performances. Her protagonists are often strangers, amateur actors, or herself. Nakadate engages the viewer and her subjects in a complex relationship of desire, power, tenderness, trust, loss, and betrayal.
The staged situations combine voyeurism, comedy, and akwardness; her intimate and sometimes unsettling works deal with issues of isolation and the desire for connection.

⚫️ GTWBeyond: Laurel Nakadate is currently part of the group show Fiction? Better than Reality at Villa Merkel, Esslingen, with her work Exorcism in January, on view until November 12, 2021.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Exorcism in January documents a two day performance in which I visited the house of a man whom I met through a chance encounter, ten years earlier, in order to perform an exorcism with him. The man had called me on the telephone the previous week, and had asked me to visit in order to perform the exorcism, hoping that his depression would lift. The video is about isolation, loneliness, friendship, relationships over time, and the hope that lives can be affected for the better by small rituals.

“I believe art has the ability to reach beyond language and that we can absorb information and concepts from images. Symbolic forms not only described something, but also contain within them the essence of what they are describing. Art is not just for oneself, not just a marker of one’s own understanding. It is also a map for those who follow after us.“

🔺GTWArtists: In her artistic practice Grit Richter explores the representation of a collective human memory. Her work refers to the multitudinous combinations of contradictory emotions that can be felt at any one time. In both their singularity and plurality, those mixed emotions, such as longing, hatred, love, fear, loneliness, frustration, shame and joy, constitute the substructures of identity and the complex diversity of human nature. Her multi-disciplinary practice of painting, sculpture, murals and textile work unites in a system of intuitive abstract forms and figurations.

🔺GTWArtists: Grit Richter in her studio, April 2021.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In her paintings Grit Richter inquires the representation of memories and experiences. Her works are shifting between abstraction and figuration, between the immediacy of utopian landscapes and the momentariness of a snapshot. Within her work she is searching for a way to visualize universal feelings that function as aesthetic parables of our inner world. They explore the alliance of the conscious and unconscious, the individual and the collective memory.

🔺GTWArtists: Next to her painting practice Grit Richter recently also started working with pastels.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“For a while I was searching for a technique that could transform my painterly ideas in a work on paper, as I was not very into drawing so far. After a while of testing and learning, I am now absolutely fascinated by the possibilities of soft pastels, the stunning vibrancy of the pigments, and how you can make the colors flow into each other. It is very familar to my oil paintings, yet it is a completely different way of working. I really love it, it opened a very new door for me and I‘m excited where the journey will bring me." – Grit Richter

⚫️ GTWBeyond: Details of Šejla Kamerić's performance Hooked, on view at The 6th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art, Ekaterinburg, curated by Çağla Īlk, Assaf Kimmel, and Misal Adnan Yıldız.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“Women are crocheting, seated in a circle, facing the audience. Each of them is working on a circular net, similar to a spider web. Over their heads are big, black ‘Hooked‘ pieces that resemble safety nets. The repetitive action of crocheting becomes an obsession. Being hooked on creating is an act of liberation. Breaking out of the strict pattern is liberating. The performance is visualizing the origins of the female struggle for creative expression through crocheting but also points out the precarious position in which women are still caught in today.“ – Šejla Kamerić
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The new performance “Hooked - Oпасная работа” takes place on the stage of the Ekaterinburg Circus.

⚫️ GTWBeyond: Šejla Kamerić is part of The 6th Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art, Ekaterinburg, curated by Çağla Īlk and Misal Adnan Yıldız on view until December 5, 2021.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The artist contributed her installation series Hooked as well as the performance Hooked - Oпасная работа that is tied to the installation series.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The performance “Hooked - Oпасная работа” by Šejla Kamerić is tied to her ongoing textile installation series ‘Hooked’ that started in 2010. The handmade crocheted nets are inspired by enlarged tablecloths – doilies (Russian: Салфеточка). These familiar household objects are transformed into pieces that symbolize the origins of their creation: the social captivity of women. The crochet pieces are oversized and unattainable in a subtle attempt to break free from the enforced and maintained restraints.

⚫️ GTWBeyond: The Sand Recalls the Moon’s Shadow, Kapwani Kiwanga's first solo show at the Moody Center for the Arts, is on view until December 19.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"The artist’s installations for the Moody recontextualize sisal, hung in a style echoing the way the fiber is left to dry on East African plantations, and silica sand, an essential material in the fracking process. Juxtaposing distant geographies, these two immersive environments eschew a linear narrative in favor of alternative understandings of economic and political realities. Reconsidering mining and agricultural practices, or simply encouraging care for one’s natural surroundings, The Sand Recalls the Moon’s Shadow focuses on human interaction with the landscape on both a micro- and macroscopic scale. Seen through the three poetic works of this exhibition, social and natural histories morph, multiply, and haunt the present, revealing new perspectives on the past that can be collectively used to imagine a better future."

In 2019 the work was exhibited in the show Demonstrationsräume. Interventionen von Céline Condorelli, Kapwani Kiwanga, Judy Radul at Albertinum, Dresden.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

“As part of the project, artists Céline Condorelli, Kapwani Kiwanga, and Judy Radul were invited to reflect on the presentation of the Albertinum's collection with artistic interventions. In different rooms of the museum they show site-specific works that question habits of seeing and spatial perception. Her interventions tie in with the ideas of El Lissitzky, who tried to activate art viewing through unconventional room design with his "Room for Abstract Art" at the Dresden International Art Exhibition in 1926. To this day, Mondrian's and Lissitzky's progressive designs have the potential to open up new approaches for today's design and space concepts.“⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
