📚 This week we'd like to share with you some publications we recently received featuring our artists. 📚
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Starting with the exhibition catalogue Macht! Licht! - edited by Andreas Beitin which includes works by ŠEJLA KAMERIĆ and KAPWANI KIWANGA. The publication was made on the occasion of the exhibition Macht! Licht!, at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It features a selection of internationally renowned positions of light art that focus on political, social, ecological, or economic topics.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"Artificial light sources are an essential prerequisite of modern global life. On the one hand, artificial light makes cultural events possible, offers social space and protection, can showcase people, objects, or consumer articles and thus lend them meaning. On the other hand, power is exercised with the targeted use of electric light: It can be used to monitor, manipulate, exclude, or even destroy." Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
ŠEJLA KAMERIĆ's work Refugees Welcome is part of the exhibition, on view until July 10, 2022.

⬛️ GTW Exhibitions:
We are excited to announce Anna Witt's solo exhibition, Soft Destructions, conceived specially for Gallery Weekend 2022. A site-specific installation is set to become the stage for a series of live performances by professional ASMR artists.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The term ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) refers to a physical reaction comprised of a pleasant tingling sensation which many people find soothing. It became popular in social media, eventually developing into a community phenomenon in 2010, primarily on YouTube. Mutual care and emotional closeness are the cornerstones of this community, as users share and watch videos to help relieve stress, anxiety, or sleeping disorders.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The live sound-performances will focus on the auditory and sensory effects of gentle, destructive actions towards objects spread within the gallery. Visitors will get a chance to experience the closeness and uniquely intimate atmosphere specific to ASMR. Wearing headphones, the reverberating sounds of cracking or scraping will be amplified for visitors, while video streams expose the actions in greater detail.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
GALLERY WEEKEND: April 29 – May 01, 2022
Opening: Friday 6pm - 9pm
Special opening hours during Gallery Weekend: Saturday & Sunday: 11 - 7 pm

🔺GTW Artists: We would like to extend a warm welcome to Anna Steinert, who is joining our family at Galerie Tanja Wagner!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Anna Steinert’s works, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and video, are inherently vibrant thanks to her characteristically broad color spectrum. Scribbling saturated colors onto her canvas with oil stick, she forms singular entities that together build a perceptive landscape that, in a further step, dissolves into a collective feeling. Her brash application of color is done in a physically vigorous act of disturbance, yet her paintings evoke an expressional beauty that is visually comforting. Steinert draws on a vast library of visual, literary, and theoretical influences, which she explores through a feminist lens. Her abstract, gestural paintings condense situational complexities and serve as a starting point for the reconstruction of significant political, societal, and personal moments. Her practice is a form of resistance against patriarchal conditions and aims to expand the visibility of themes, such as female communities, ecology, and dissimilar forms of sourcing energy.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We have prepared a small selection of her works for you to explore and enjoy, for more information please visit our Viewing Room (link in bio).

⬛️ GTWExhibitions: CAROLINE GARCIA's' work Force of a .22 Caliber Bullet is part of our group exhibition “Empathic Device – It's Hard to Get Enough of Something That Almost Works“, on view until Apr 14.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In her video work Force of a .22 Caliber Bullet (2020) New York-based artist Caroline Garcia experimentally mediates grief, violence, and resistance through a postcolonial perspective. Filmed on a body camera, typically used by law enforcement, Garcia performs a series of endurance exercises with a boxing training apparatus attached to her head. Framing the violence of her actions, Garcia intervenes a guided meditation through a voice echo of a soundscape of indigenous Filipino instruments and alleviates the aggression her movements and the law enforcement camera suggest.

⬛️ GTWExhibitions: TRA MY NGYUEN' works I'd blush If I could and Bodies #2, #3 are part of our group exhibition “Empathic Device – It's Hard to Get Enough of Something That Almost Works“, on view until Apr 14.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’d blush If I could focuses on the gendering and orientalising of machines from an Asian diasporic perspective and on the social discrepancies that arise from cyborgian future speculation. Nguyen’s cyborg assemblages shield immaterial bodies, and thereby critically scrutinize the concealment of exploited bodies in the labor force which are being automated away by machines.

⬛️ GTWExhibitions: ELISA GIARDINA PAPA's video installation Technologies of Care is shown in our current group exhibitiom Empathic Device – It's Hard to Get Enough of Something That Almost Works, on view until Apr 14, 2022.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Technologies of Care (2016/2022) by New York- and Sicily-based artist Elisa Giardina Papa documents new ways in which service and affective labor are being outsourced via internet platforms, exploring topics such as precarity and immaterial labor. The video installation visualizes the invisible workforce of online caregivers who work as anonymous, domestic freelancers, connected via third-party companies to customers around the globe. Through a variety of websites and apps, they provide clients with customized goods and experiences, erotic stimulation, companionship, and emotional support.

⚫️ GTWBeyond: We're excited to share with you KAPWANI KIWANGA's participation in the group exhibition “Color as program“ at Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, Apr 08 – Aug 07, 2022.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“The exhibition deals with the theme of color as a programmatic tool. It brings together works and objects from the realms of art and cultural history spanning more than a hundred years. With the advent of Modernism, color itself became an autonomous medium of art and design. As a result, the use of color as a material has changed dramatically. In the wake of the fastpaced development of digital technologies in recent years, our perception of color and our understanding of the role of art have been shaped by increasingly intense chromatic experiences. The powerful impact of color touches all disciplines, not only aesthetically, but also politically and economically. By the same token, its commercial use in Capitalist societies has increased exponentially.
The central theme of Color as program is the artistic preoccupation with the affective and representative power of color. More than ever before, the meaning of color has become a complex construct of social conventions. The visual arts play a central role in the exhibition – not least because of their capacity to open up abstract spaces of thought.“
