Big thanks to Ferial Nadja Karrasch and artinberlin for this beautifully detailed article on our exhibition HOW TO HUMAN
"The question of How to human – how does it actually work, being human? – also functions as a bracket that binds together the artistic visions represented by Tanja Wagner. And it runs like a thread through the past ten years of gallery work as much as it points towards what is to come.
Tanja Wagner, who opened her gallery when she was only 30, has focused from the beginning on art that points out injustices, questions social conditions, opens up new perspectives, and disrupts old hierarchies and narratives.
The question could not be more topical, because especially now, at a time when the climate crisis, extremely worrying social developments and the pandemic are wrenching us with all their different micro and macro effects, it is important to reflect on this question now and then.
But Wagner’s program is not only about challenging things; she is also concerned with “being held by an aesthetic, by the beauty that can emanate from a work,” she said in our conversation at her gallery."

#tbt FROM THE ARCHIVES: Lina Scheynius's first exhibition at Galerie Tanja Wagner was the group show 'Male Nudes – Female Desires' together with Jen Davis, Nina Hoffmann and Paula Winkler in 2013! I really loved that show! ❤️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How do today’s young women look at men, naked men? How does their desire look like? Is the female gaze different than the male gaze? Is there a different desire?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Lina Scheynius is capturing daily scenes, travels and most of all friends and lovers. She portrays her life with a casualness and honesty that is both touching and beautiful. The series (2002–2006) was the first series in which she was documenting the relationship with her boy friend at the time. The photographs depict a joy- and lustful intimacy, a carefree and adventurous time between young lovers. At the same time they convey the bittersweet feeling of a long lasting summer love that is meant to end.

»My art helps me connect deeper with the world around me - to pay closer attention to it, and to really see the things that I could easily become blind to because they are so familiar to me. It helps me shine a light on moments that could just quietly pass me by. It also helps me to playfully and honestly interact with people I love. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It is my hope that it also offers the viewer something similar. Especially today when a lot of us are so busy staring at screens and easily become oblivious to all the little wonders constantly going on around us.« — Lina Scheynius⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Spring 2020. After the initial shock of lockdown, when things started to settle down, I could not continue to post on social media as I had before. My world had gotten smaller. I started to post photos of my bed. Not all very current as I shoot film and my lab was closed, but that didn’t matter. They felt extremely current. This is what I was looking at every day. This is where my life was playing out. I was here. And as I posted these bed photos I also started to photograph the bed.

Angelika J Trojnarski is taking us back to sunnier times when she was a resident at CCA ANDRATX in Mallorca, Spain a few months ago!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Past Oktober and November, Angelika J. Trojnarski spend her time researching, painting and getting inspired at her residency at CCA ANDRATX in Mallorca, Spain.
Seeing the beautiful Mallorcan nature and its recent destruction by wildfire deeply touched her and led her to develop a new technique, working with fire and burnt surfaces, thereby further developing her main topic, nature and its man made destruction.
Repost CCA Andratx
We are very excited to introduce you to our current resident artist Angelika J. Trojnarski, who will stay in Studio Rojo through November. It is Angelika’s second time at our studios and we look forward to seeing the new works she is already working on.
Crucial in her work are the complexities and correlations between the environment, the natural phenomena and the physical forces. Art and science are interlinked by the continuing search for a deeper understanding of the world and as a researcher she appreciates her studio as a laboratory.
Angelika J. Trojnarski's work 'Forest Bathing' (2020) featured in this month's @monopolmagazin which would have been on view @artcologne this year. We hope for spring of 2021!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

#tbt FROM THE ARCHIVES: Angelika J. Trojnarski's very first solo exhibition 'Observation of Nature' at Galerie Tanja Wagner in Summer 2011!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In the exhibition, Angelika J Trojnarski’s paintings, installations and photography dealt with the remains of abandoned industrial sights, run-down amusement parks and abandoned exhibition spaces and habitats. The spaces showed human accomplishments in technology and civilisation; but also bore witness to their megalomaniacal hubris.
HOW TO HUMAN THROUGH YOUR ART?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
»Through my art I not only try to understand the world and its complexities, but to depict how I see and feel it. The viewers in front of my work should feel the same amazement and awe I sense standing in nature, the fascination overwhelming me in a science museum or while leafing through an encyclopedia in my studio. Ideally they are touched by empathy, compassion, and respect for our planet. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Like me, they should want to experience this world with every fiber of their bodies, to understand it for themselves, to save and preserve it.« — Angelika J. Trojnarski⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Annabel Daou's work 'mine' is currently on view in the exhibition 'On Celestial Bodies' at Arter Intanbul. Extended until August 1, 2021!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
On Celestial Bodies deals with questions around the possibility of reconceiving and reconstructing a vital terrain for living together in our present day. Including works by twenty-eight artists, the exhibition invites visitors to contemplate together the ways that beings come together and disperse, the manners through which they build relations, and their ways of distancing and converging with each other.

On Celestial Bodies questions the possible effects that exhibitions and artworks may assume in imagining a politics of life. What are the potential ways of understanding art today as an act that cares for radical relationality, and one that affirms and defends life itself, in the context of the idea of justice, that makes living together possible?

#tbt FROM THE ARCHIVES: Annabel Daou's very first solo exhibition 'come back to the war' at Galerie Tanja Wagner early 2012!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
come back to the war: human beings appear driven to past events, to “come back” to places or situations that are often those of struggle. The title of the exhibition referred to the engagement with and attraction towards conflict, may it be a political conflict, a conflict between people and situations or even between the artist, viewer and the work itself. In pieces such as the lines are drawn (2011) and the fight is fixed (2011) the titles played between their literal meanings and the visual or conceptual possibilities opened by language. In no man’s land (2011), Daou explored the void between the written word and the act of writing, using a red quill to inscribe the surface of the paper while blowing the ink away at the same time.
from where to where (2010) was one of the central pieces of the exhibition. It is a project that had been completed over a period of two months spent between New York and Beirut—Daou’s first trip back to Lebanon after leaving her home country. It was composed out of the English and Arabic responses of strangers encountered during the travel to whom the questions were posed Where are you now? Where are you coming from? and Where are you going to? The title of the piece from where to where was a literal translation of an Arabic expression that idiomatically translates as “how dare you?” This question frames the work as an inquiry into the sense in which identity is asserted, undermined, and/or reconstructed through the ongoing exchange between location and state of mind.
HOW TO HUMAN THROUGH YOUR ART?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
»Maybe none of us are the same. While I often approach my work from the perspective of our shared voices and repetitive use of the same language/phrases, I find myself lately overwhelmed by the thought that we are all just different enough that each person may encounter things in ways that no other person can imagine.« — Annabel Daou⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Annabel Daou, Action/Figure (Howl, Struggle, Kiss, Forget), 2020 as part of our exhibition HOW TO HUMAN - 10 years of Galerie Tanja Wagner.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The words in this piece, approximately 260 in total, are all possible human actions. The language takes the form of a lace garment that serves to alternately conceal and expose. The title alludes to action figures, which have generally been marketed to boys and often represent physical traits of strength, toughness and heroism. The suspended words indicate the potential and chaotic possibility of action, while the form comes in and out of being, a floating figure that appears untethered and placeless. The structure of connecting lines also references computer generated images of the body. While the bare materiality of the top layer suggests a protective but permeable exterior or exoskeleton, the layer underneath evokes the interior life behind the words.

Today, exactly on September 25, I opened up this very own gallery. Back then, and mind you this is 10 years ago, I kept hearing the following things: There are not that many great female artists. Political art – particularly by women – doesn’t sell. Don’t polarize too much. And so on. That was my trigger, and it quickly became the founding motivation for my gallery. However, the topics my artists address and how they navigate them are more important to me than gender. So, despite the common opinion we’ve come a long and successful way. For me and my gallery it’s always about exploring HOW TO HUMAN. Art is such an important way to reflect, feel and create a dialogue, and sometimes make sense of it all. It’s about creating awareness, and connections, dissolving power structures through my artists’ work, and our own work in the art world. Over the next weeks we therefore won’t just focus on getting ready for Frieze London, where we will be presenting works by Šejla Kamerić, Kapwani Kiwanga, and Grit Richter in the first ever online edition of the fair; we will also curate the group show of all my gallery artists which will be a mix of new and existing favorites, exploring HOW TO HUMAN in our very own way. Save the date for the opening on Nov 14th. In anticipation of the show, we cordially invite you to follow our communication channels, where each month one artist will be featured in-depth, exploring their practice, our relationship, and what representing their work means to me. I am looking forward to welcoming you to this most personal exhibition in November. Best, Tanja
In Ulf Aminde's video "Körper, Theorie, Poetik" (2018) an unrecognized body speaks in the style of an undercover video. This body has crept into existing systems, structures and above all into a likewise unknown institution in order to change it from within. Reflections on emancipative subjects and political movements lead to the questions of whether radicality is achieved by initiating one's own institutions or by internal change. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ulf Aminde Körper, Theorie, Poetik 2018 HD video, colour, sound 22:54 min.
The video Chorweiler Beat by Anna Witt takes place in the eponymous Cologne district. As in her video BEAT BODY, Anna Witt uses ultrasound to record the heartbeats of several residents. The audible and individual portrait of a person's heartbeat is made visible through a choreography of young dancers from the same neighborhood. Anna Witt Chorweiler Beat 2016 HD video, colour, sound 12:57 min. 5 + 1 AP (2/5)
Recurring elements in Anna Witt's work are body movements and performances. For them Anna Witt deals unbiasedly and individually with people in their own environments. Extract from the everyday life of the actors, the movements and performances in Witt's works become an expression of the inner and outer subject-forming world. BEAT BODY is a performative monument by Anna Witt for the sex workers on Kurfürstenstrasse in Berlin. For the video work, the artist asked the sex workers to record their heartbeats, which become an individual but also anonymous portrait. The personal soundtrack of each woman’s heartbeat was transformed into individual choreographies by professional pole dancers from a nightclub in the neighborhood nearby. BEAT BODY becomes a tribute to the women of the street and emphasizes the value of each individual human being. "This work places echoes of the past in dialogue with the unknown future. The old Singer sewing machine references my grandmother, a Lebanese seamstress who worked in a sweatshop in New York. My feet on the treadle function as a sort of visual metronome. The rhythmic sounds are overlaid with recorded voices of people posing unanswerable questions. The sewing machine has taken on new relevance in our present domestic confinement, as have the suddenly more precarious lives of our elders." - Annabel Daou in Canvas Magazine, This Is Not A Rehearsal published on July 2020. We are looking forward to Anna Witt‘s performance BEAT HOUSE on May 11 at 4pm at Alfred-Klinkan-Hof, Vienna for Wiener Festwochen! Please join! ❤️ Kagran and Kaisermühlen are areas in Vienna’s 22nd district that concentrate a piece of the city’s history. Formerly a working-class neighbourhood and stronghold of council housing, it was one of the last bastions of the Socialist Party in its fight against Austrofascism. What interests Anna Witt most about this history is the vibrant utopia, the belief in the collective and in solidarity. The work of the visual artist, who was awarded the Otto Mauer Prize in 2018, is performative and participatory – this allows her to delve into questions that are important to her: How much community still exists in our society? In what way are the residents of a “Gemeindebau” connected nowadays? For Beat House Donaustadt Witt uses an ultrasound scanner to record their heartbeats. At the start of the Wiener Festwochen, the residents open their windows, letting their individual rhythms drift out and join to form a collective sound. The sound of the city. #beathouse Donaustadt @wienerfestwochen #alfredklinkanhof #heatbeat #trailer #annawitt

OPENING TOMORROW!! Ulf Aminde GLOBAL NATIONAL - Kunst zum Rechtspopulismus Group exhibition curated by Raimar Stange Haus am Lützowplatz, Berlin March 21 - May 26, 2019 Opening: March 20, 7pm "Absolute premiere and very excited that it will finally come true: In the exhibition GLOBAL NATIONAL at Haus am Lützowplatz for the first time there will be the possibility to see a preview version in scale 1:10 of the memorial at the Keupstraße, Cologne, to remember that racist terrorist attack. It will then be possible to create virtual walls with the help of an App and Augmented Reality technology, on which films can be shown, pictures can be seen and texts can be read. The real App later will be much more complex, the memorial will later be 26 m long, but it already gives a good impression how it is meant. Background: The city of Cologne is failing to realise the memorial at Keupstraße (to remember the racis terrorist attack in Cologne, Probsteigasse in 2001 and Keupstraße in 2004) and is not standing up against the investment group that owns the site where the memorial will be built. The participation in the exhibition is the prelude to a tour throughout Germany to draw attention to the project." - Ulf Aminde Texts, pictures, films and realization: Meral Sahin, Mitat Özdemir, Svenja Leiber, Timo Glatz, Gesine Schütt, Massimo Perinelli, Daniel Poštrak, Kutlu Yurtseven, Jasper Kettner, Sebastian Weise, Ulf Aminde, Tribunal 'NSU-Komplex-auflösen', Initiative Herkesin Meydanı - Platz für Alle, Buntspecht Film und Digitales GmbH.

Annabel Daou's audio guide and video Chou Hayda? currently on view at Beirut Museum of Art - Bema - and soon at Galerie Tanja Wagner for Annabel's upcoming solo exhibition this November!! In November of 2017, people from across Beirut came to the National Museum and gave their voices to a number of objects in the collection. The people spoke to and for and about these objects from the past, and, in doing so, they revealed fragments of the present. They did not attempt to disclose a particular historical narrative. Nor did they attempt to create a fiction. They did not lie and they did not try to tell the truth. On view at The Beirut Museum of Art until December 30, 2018! Commissioned by BEWA, in collaboration with TEMPORARY . ART . PLATFORM, with the partnership of the MINISTRY OF CULTURE / DIRECTORATE GENERAL OF ANTIQUITIES and the NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BEIRUT.
