During the colonial period, sugarcane was the most widely grown crop in the Caribbean. Its cultivation involved the large-scale clearing of woodland and depended on exploitation and slavery. The distance between the hanging sheets corresponds to the width of the rows in which sugarcane was and still is grown. Today, this paper — among other products — is made of sugarcane and merchandised as eco-friendly because it does not contain wood. Matières premières thus not only tells of the history of sugarcane cultivation and slavery, but also of new production methods employed in the post-colonial Caribbean. The steel forms providing a framework for the paper were forged from the machetes formerly used to harvest the crops. They make reference to the ambiguity of the machete, which not only serves as a tool but can also become a weapon. A raw material is only raw until it becomes something different, something new. Bearing the traces of production and exploitation, the white paper in Kiwanga’s work recounts the traumatic history of this process. (Text taken from the exhibition catalogue)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Kapwani Kiwanga on her Spring of 2020 edition twofold, currently on view at our gallery:

"Originating from research around colours used in institutions to control behaviour this is a studio trial that I photographed. This find of material notebook led to other three dimensional works including linear paintings and écorchés shown at my solo exhibition at the Esker Foundation in Canada.

I chose this body of work for the online program as it came out of an initial question I had as to how people's bodies and movement were disciplined and effected by architecture and spatial design. A lot of the research related to these works kept on bringing me back to hygiene discourse - particularly in response to Tuberculosis in Europe, and their larger long-lasting effects on societies. I often look backward to understand my present and imagine a future. In our current context I can reread this body of work not as a way of understanding our now but rather gaining perspective."

Spring of 2020

OPEN NOW: SPRING OF 2020 with editions by Ulf Aminde, Annabel Daou, Sejla Kameric, Kapwani Kiwanga, Laurel Nakadate, Grit Richter, Lina Scheynius, Angelika J Trojnarski, Anna Witt.

On view at the gallery and available at tanjawagner-editions.com

The spring of 2020 is one we won‘t forget and the year continues to be a challenge.
To remember this time, our artists have created a special print edition.

On March 15 we decided to jump online and developed a 10 week program. Each week, co-curated by one artist, we experimented with different digital tools to create a dialogue and connect through art about the topics at hand: the work force and care work – Anna Witt. Happiness and what it means to us – Šejla Kamerić. Taking over our worries – Annabel Daou. Sending you flowers – Lina Scheynius. The effect of a new hygiene movement – Kapwani Kiwanga. Female identities – Nilbar Güreş. Parenting and relating during the pandemic – Grit Richter. Sharing grief and sorrow – Laurel Nakadate. Systemic racism in Germany and how we will treat our public spaces – Ulf Aminde. Raising sensibility for our nature – Angelika J. Trojnarski.

Each of the artists’ edition refers to content from the 10-week online program or originates from an image that evolved during the lockdown period.

Together with d'mage, a printing specialist in Berlin, we created these beautiful editions as a very special fine art archival pigment print on Hahnemühle paper. The editions have all the same size either 40 x 30 cm or 30 x 40 cm and are available as single prints or as a box set including all nine prints.

10% of the proceeds from Spring of 2020 will be donated to a women‘s shelter in Berlin, 10% of the proceeds from Spring of 2020 will be donated to a women‘s shelter in Berlin, an organization in high demand due to the rise of domestic abuse since the pandemic started.

Spring of 2020

Dear All,

The spring of 2020 is one we won‘t forget and the year continues to be a challenge.

To remember this time, our artists have created a special print edition that will be on view in the exhibition Spring of 2020 at the gallery and also available on our website from June 18 to August 1.

On March 15 we decided to jump online and developed a 10 week program. Each week, co-curated by one artist, we experimented with different digital tools to create a dialogue and connect through art about the topics at hand: the work force and care work – Anna Witt . Happiness and what it means to us – Sejla Kameric. Raising sensibility for our nature – Angelika J Trojnarski.

All the subjects the artists touched upon during the online program are more relevant than ever. Most of the works included were existing works focused on subjects that the artists have been thoroughly examining throughout their practice for many years and will continue to do so.

The online program is still available on our website alongside free access to the included full length video works until August 1.

Each of the artists’ edition refers to content from the 10-week online program or originates from an image that evolved during the lockdown period.

10% of the proceeds from Spring of 2020 will be donated to a women‘s shelter in Berlin, an organisation in high demand due to the rise of domestic abuse since the pandemic started.

For the past 10 years I have been passionately building visibility and value for art that draws awareness to topics relevant to society while working actively on an inclusive and gender-balanced art market. I enthusiastically support artists with global perspectives and diverse backgrounds who challenge dated narratives and structures and call in a new vision and sensibility.
However, this is a moment for us all to reflect, reassess, educate ourselves and look to our own personal responsibility to further the fight for change.

We stand with everyone who is speaking up and supporting a more just and equal world. We stand with those who are having hard and necessary conversations, those dealing with their own dark sides and shining light on what doesn’t work about themselves and the system, those who listen, learn and take action.

We are looking forward to welcoming you in the gallery or online.
We are open on Sunday June 21 from 11–17h.

Much love,

Tanja

Entnazifizierung jetzt!
Hanau war kein Einzelfall!

Women in the arts and culture were asked to each feature one work of art by a female artist. The book is launched on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of admission of women to all German art academies this year.
