MMpraxis / Montag Modus

MMpraxis / Montag Modus Montag Modus is an interdisciplinary event series organized by the MMpraxis curatorial platform. Its program is site-specific and has an annual thematic focus.

The series centers around performance art, choreography and time-based media. Montag Modus is based in Berlin with a program that involves both local as well as artists and cultural workers from the regions of Central and Eastern Europe. Each edition presents four to five new works and offers a one-week on-site residency to the artists. The simultaneous engagement of various spaces allows the work

s to enter into a temporary dialogue in an exhibition-like situation. From its beginnings, Montag Modus investigates different methodologies of how to present live art and tests the formats of these events. In the frame of this ongoing research, it continues to question which forms of knowledge arise through the combination of live works.

Cookbook 🧆🧅🍲

The menu-publication that accompanies the performative dinner ends with an archival section: an experimental editorial space that allows us to delve deeper into the potential of personal and collective archives. One of the subtopics approached here (among them, vernacular moonshine-making,a brief history of effigy protests, or non-market-driven foraging traditions) is the domestic cookbook as an artefact that makes the invisible suddenly become visible.

These notebooks serve as more than just records of culinary blueprints and instructions; they form a sort of culinary ethnography that documents the gastronomic culture of a particular area through the intimate eyes of their own practitioners. They possess the potential to transform faded pages into historical artefacts, offering a unique form of emancipatory autobiographical writing. Domestic cookbooks are not mere marginalia, but vibrant archives pulsating with an unyielding sense of agency.

🔹New publication x  🔹

“Feast of Futures: Easternfuturism in Art, Food, and Gathering” functions as a re-imagined menu: part theory, part practice; part history, part future. Departing from the intersection of Eastern Europe’s many pasts and futures, the publication explores the possibilities of an interlaced narrative space, examined through the means of sharing food and stories, cultural histories of post-communist diasporas, as well as newly born hopes, with the purpose of reclaiming Eastern Europe as a space whose future is yet to be articulated.

The publication contains a pickled futurism manifesto by Anna Tokareva (.small.things), a speculative essay on Socialist Herbalism by miha brebenel (._._._), an interview with the Berlin-based ensemble of female vocal artists Otucha Collective (), conceptual anchorings, recipes and family cookbooks provided by Kasia Wolińska () and Léna Szirmay-Kalos (), as well as an essay on the potential of Easternfuturism by Laura Naum () and Petre Mogoș () with art works by Berlin-based artist Márk Fridvalszki ().

Anna Tokareva

In a manifesto driven by sauer power and dedicated to the necessity of pickling, writer and artist Anna Tokareva .small.things goes on a brine-full expedition into the history, present, and future of pickling. Pickling is for the people and by the people. Pickling is part of our (migrant) microbial commons that is dependent on collaboration and not consumption! This is why we need to lift our gazes, raise our arms, and proclaim the arrival of pickled futurism!

Anna Tokareva’s multidisciplinary creative practice includes writing, digital image-making, photography, and painting. She is interested in: memory; tensions between embodiment and dislocation; traversing slippages between digital and urban landscapes; tending thought-weeds towards systemic imbalance intoxication. Her writing has been published by Kajet Journal, href zine, HAMSTER Magazine and Digital Cultures Institute NZ. She has exhibited work in online and offline spaces across New Zealand, UK, Germany, Spain and Croatia.

Miha Brebenel

For the menu-publication that accompanies the performative dinner hosted by Tanzfabrik on the 8th of October, we invited 𝐦𝐢𝐡𝐚 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐥 to speculate on the notion of “Socialist Herbalism”. By focusing on molecular histories, epistemic violence, and practices of care in Eastern Europe, Balkans, and the Baltics, their contribution investigates historical European Socialist visions of the environment, science, and the use of alternative medicines, and puts these in conversation with global q***r and feminist modalities and imaginations, which revisit herbalism as a community practice.

The present that we are now living is nevertheless inextricably embedded in white supremacist and ethno-nationalist processes of nation-building, as much as forms of oppression of human and plant life remain unacknowledged. A clear example of these oppressive histories is the 19th century Romanian history of enslavement of Roma peoples, and the simultaneous extraction, dismissal, and punishment (as witchcraft) of medicinal knowledge and practices belonging to Roma communities.

miha brebenel (they/them) is a romanian-born disabled white q***r based in london. their long-term and expanding explorations are focused on the histories of socialist solidarity, and its intersections with disability, gender, critical plant studies, law, social and healing justice, somatics. miha is a senior lecturer at wi******er school of art, university of southampton and has been teaching and researching in the areas of digital cultures, screen and moving image art and media technologies, gender, disability and identity.

03/10/2023

The condition of Easternfuturism is approached through the potential of re-imagining new (radically different) futures. A premise that prompts the need for change is the pervasive sense of anti-utopianism that has taken over our contemporary life: the prevailing sentiment that not only is capitalism the sole viable system, but it’s also deemed impossible to conceive a cohesive alternative. So, how do we imagine new futures? Engaging in a distinctive kind of vernacular futurology, what does Easternfuturism look like? Some tentative answers to these questions are provided by the editors of ( & ) in their piece “Easternfuturism: Zigzagging Toward New Futures”, which is accompanied by art works by Berlin-based Hungarian artist Márk Fridvalszki ().

In the next week, we will publish snippets of the publication that will accompany the performative dinner hosted by (October 8, 2023; tickets still available). Departing from the intersection of Eastern Europe’s many pasts and futures, “Feast of Futures: Easternfuturism in Art, Food, and Gathering” explores the possibilities of an interwoven narrative space, examined through the means of sharing food and stories. A journey into Eastern Europe’s futures unfolds through a three-course dinner featuring regional cuisine and family recipes, paired with food, spirits, games, and an artistic programme.

Aufruf "Dance for Millions" // Tanznacht-Eröffnung
08.09.2023, 18.00 - 19.00 Uhr

Call "Dance for Millions" // Tanznacht Opening
08.09.2023, 6 - 7 p.m.
Call to all members of the Berlin dance community: Show up in large numbers to the Tanznacht opening to present the dance scene in its diversity in a strong and united way during the presence of the Senator for Culture Joe Chialo between 6 and 7 pm! In doing so, we revisit the still current ZTB cultural policy action "Dance for Millions" from 2019: The €7 million demanded in the Round Table Dance to strengthen dance in Berlin is still a long way off, and the implementation of the seven Round Table Dance measures, currently running at a minimal level, is threatened by cuts. Posters and flags of the "Dance for Millions" campaign can be picked up at the Uferstudios office until the start of the dance night. We count on your commitment and your presence!
