Synästhesie Festival

Synästhesie Festival Synästhesie Festival presents Synästhesie 8 at Kulturbrauerei Berlin on November 10th & 11th, 2023. But its heart and soul began a bit earlier.

In the last edition in 2019, we saw the likes of a reunited Stereolab performing alongside Michael Rother (NEU!), Deerhunter, Black Lips, A Place to Bury Strangers and the brilliant Mdou Moctar from Niger as well as home grown Neue Deutsche Wellle chanteuse Sofia Portanet. Continuing with the festival's dedication to spotlighting German contribution to experimental music, Krautrock legends Faust will be performing their iconic 1973 Album Faust IV in its entirety. Beak>, The KVB, and local heroes Bleib Modern, Andreya Casablanca (Gurr) and THALA round out the initial lineup. "Over the past couple years, there’s been a small but impeccably-curated festival bubbling up in Berlin called Synästhesie. The origins of the event center on 8MM, a beloved, dive-y rock bar that has provided a haven for Berlin’s local scene as well as a gathering place for musicians passing through town — Synästhesie is booked and presented by the people behind the bar. For two days, the fest takes over a venue and offers a lineup that skews heavily towards psychedelic music in many of its permutations, from zone-out garage rock to trippier, synthier traditions." - Stereogum

History:

Technically, Synästhesie began in 2015. Driven by the key success factor of his 8MM Bar, namely music, Alex ‘Olli’ Remzi devoted a portion of all future profits toward maintaining a live music tradition in his adopted home of Berlin. In 2006, Remzi organized the first 8MM Musik label night at the Bassy Cowboy Club next door to 8MM Bar. Around 300 guests gathered to watch the Icelandic Cramps and Jesus and Mary Chain inspired Singapore Sling perform with Powers, the new band formed by former Stereolab drummer and 8MM stalwart Joe Dilworth. Over the next 10 years, Remzi would facilitate the most reliably raucous yet enlightening string of non-mainstream concerts and subsequent sick days, since in order to keep overhead low, the concerts always occurred on Wednesday nights and would spill back over into the 8MM Bar until most people should have been having breakfast. These shows were driven by the ambition that each one should be better than the one before, and for all intents and purposes, that goal was met, culminating in a 3 week stretch in 2015 with a total of 9 bands including The Warlocks, Crocodiles, and The Lumarians, which Anton Newcombe would label Synästhesie. The name stuck and in 2016 Remzi encountered Michael Rother (NEU!) at Alexanderplatz and invited him to play at the hauntingly gorgeous bombed out ex-brewery known as UFO Studios, the location of Synästhesie II in 2016. With not much of a plan, nor walkie-talkies for that matter, Remzi and a committed group of music lover friends pulled off the festival, making it look easy while behind the scenes holding it together by threads.

2017 saw the festival reached a new milestone, that of 8MM being represented in the Volksbühne. After 15 years of being the outsider venue in Berlin, the powers that be had finally noticed the relevance of 8MM’s contribution to the Berlin music scene. In 2017, Arne Buss joined Synästhesie Festival and as head of production ensured that the quality of the artistic content was finally paired with a world class production team.

2018 saw the festival relocate to it current home, the Kulturbrauerei, as Remzi cajoled Jason Spaceman into Spiritualized’s first performance in Berlin in 15 years. Synästhesie Festival maintained the tradition of always building on what came just before. In 2019, the festival achieved the epitome of its vision by bringing together Michael Rother (NEU!), Stereolab and Deerhunter together on one stage. 3 generations of music inspired by a massively overlooked-at-home music phenomenon in the late 60’s and early 70’s Germany known as Krautrock. During the dark pandemic winter of 2020, the crew of Synästhesie managed string together 5 nights of live music, that offered a beacon of light and a chance to work for stage crews and bands. In June 2021, Synästhesie announced its return November with yet another impeccably curated lineup featuring krautrock legends Faust, Beak>, The KVB, Anika, Automatic and much more. In 2021, Remzi established Synästhesie Festival as a not-for-profit gGmbH, to support and encourage this unique aspect of German musical heritage.

INTRODUCING - the incomparable PLATTENBAU - legends of the Berlin scene headlining the intimate ACUD Club on the New Colossus stage for 8MM Fest 26 - first release fest tickets almost gone ! Get in quick - available now via link in bio

Plattenbau (co**ie block in German) is an international Berlin-based foursome that fuses elements of post-punk, noise rock and wave into a dark and intense potion. Their sound blends robotic drums, gothy basslines, mystical guitars and paranoid synths into a mood akin to a 90s VHS horror soundtrack, tied together with deep, brooding vocals. The result is a sonic experience that feels both chaotic and meticulously crafted, on brand with their slogan “Tight, loose and evil”.

INTRODUCING - BORSCHT - playing the New Colossus stage at ACUD Club for 8MM Fest 26 - festival tickets available now via link in bio

Borscht are a London-based five-piece who released their debut EP, Colour Of Forever, in May 2026.
Borscht make off-kilter alternative rock rooted in folk, psychedelia and surreal storytelling. Drawing on influences including Lou Reed, The Small Faces and The Kinks, their music balances melodic charm with a darker, esoteric edge. Part late-night confession, part strange fable, part social commentary.
Since emerging, Borscht have quickly established a formidable live reputation, performing at Glastonbury Festival, New Colossus (NYC) and Left Of The Dial (NL), alongside shows at Moth Club, The George Tavern, Shacklewell Arms and The Windmill. Their music has also received early support and coverage from DIY, The Line Of Best Fit, Rapture Magazine, Under The Radar, MTV UK and Hideous Magazine, helping establish Borscht as one of the most intriguing new voices in London’s underground scene.

INTRODUCING: From Los Angeles - the debut Berlin appearance of PAYCHEQUE - playing the 8MM stage at 8MM Fest 26 this November - Festival tickets available now via link in bio

Paycheque is the synth-pop duo of Allison Goldfarb and Jackson MacIntosh. Their self-titled-debut album, released in June of 2026, documents life at the margins of post-pandemic Los Angeles: limited resources, long nights, and a sense of romantic longing propelling them forward.

Written and recorded together at home using hardware synthesizers, the record draws from the hook-heavy elegance of OMD and New Musik, with an eye toward timeless classic songcraft filtered through sonic experimentation. Boy-girl vocals trade perspective over drum machines, cinematic synths and guitars indebted to UK jangle and new wave.

Since 2021, Belgian band marcel has managed to offer primitive yet generous music, exactly halfway between Dead Kennedys and Talk Talk, Nina Hagen and Jacques Dutronc, with a severe penchant for poetic-horrific lyrics about the strangeness of earthly existence. They excel in a bastardised, experimental,
unorthodox form of punk that seduced audiences from Arlon to New-York, from Paris to London. Their latest album was produced and mixed by Ben Hampson (DITZ, Lambrini Girls,...) and has been released by Luik Music and Géographie Records last year.

INTRODUCING: Snake Eyes from Brighton UK - playing the New Colossus stage at ACUD Club for 8MM Fest 26 - festival tickets available now via link in bio

Snake Eyes are a Brighton DIY grit-pop power duo making loud, melodic, scrappy British rock. After years of heavy UK/EU touring and festival appearances including The Great Escape, 2000 Trees, Truck, Left of the Dial and Rebellion, Jim Heffy and Thomas Coe-Brooker released their debut album, Cash Rich, in March 2026 via Alcopop! and Grand Hotel van Cleef.
Self-produced and entirely written by the band, Cash Rich pushes their grunge, punk and indie influences in new directions. Backed by BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6, Radio X, Clash and Kerrang!, Snake Eyes have also toured with Dune Rats, You Me At Six and Dinosaur Pile-Up.
Their live shows are chaotic, heartfelt and relentlessly energetic — driven by big riffs, sticky melodies and a genuine sense of community.

INTRODUCING: one of Berlins most exciting new bands - The Nightclubs - playing the at 8MM Bar for 8MM Fest 26 - festival tickets available now via link in bio.

Berlin-based duo The Nightclubs, made up of Sophie Soraya and Hermie
Hemlock, channel a sharp, nostalgic energy through a modern electronic lens,
drawing from the glitchy edge of electroclash and the sleek pulse of 70s and 80s synth pop.
Blurring the line between concert and party, their performances centre around analogue hardware and an energetic, instinctive stage presence.
Their independent release Mirror Romance has picked up spins from Jack Antonoff and Nathan Shepherd on BBC Radio 6 Music, alongside early support from So Young and upcoming shows with Lewis OfMan and Camilla Sparksss, plus dates across Milan, Madrid, and London in the pipeline.
With a run of releases on the horizon, The Nightclubs are carving out their place in a lineage that nods to Ladytron, Crystal Castles, and Miss Kittin.

Introducing - Black Bo****lo - playing 8MM Fest 26 on the New Colossus stage at ACUD Club

Black Bo****lo is a 5-piece art-rock band from South London, fronted by Sienna Bo****lo, whose emotive soprano, macabre lyricism and wicked sense of humour have been compared to Björk, PJ Harvey and The Last Dinner Party.

Spearheaded by Sienna’s operatic vocals and vivid, elliptical songwriting, their unique brand of alternative rock is enchanted with elements of vaudeville, post-
punk, jazz, psychedelia, gothic rock and chamber pop. With the advent of their third studio album, they have fine-tuned their kaleidoscopic genre-hopping to its
most cohesive and stirring form yet, taking further influence from trip-hop and industrial. Through a series of acclaimed headline shows (most recently at
London’s 100 Club), international festival appearances (at Rotterdam’s Left of the Dial and NYC’s New Colossus Festival), and a penchant for cinematic
music videos, they have built a dedicated cult following across the UK and Western Europe.

Over the course of the next weeks we will be introducing you to the incredible artists playing the 8MM Fest this Nov 13th+14th.

Introducing BED - playing the The New Colossus Festival stage at ACUD Club . BED also killed it in NYC on our 8MM stage this year - don’t miss them - festival tickets available now in bio.

BED is a Berlin based band founded by Argentinian bass player Sol Astolfi and Chilean vocalist Nicolás Astorga in 2021. After initial experimentation, writing sessions and first album recording, they invited Spanish/German guitar player Jon Brinkmann to join them. At its core, BED is a q***r musical project, with a sound rooted in shoegaze, dream pop and post punk. Their lyrics are sad and sexual, weaving together threads of both vulnerability and desire, producing a body of work that challenges normative creative expression. This is exemplified in the vocalizations, which are intentionally gender ambiguous, representing a fluid identity throughout their music. The band winds together iconic elements of the 90’s scene, layered with ambient and influenced by the Berlin rave scene. Their debut album “everything hurts” released in May 2025 on Bretford records, is a delicate and yet rough, noisy and still dramatic output that belongs to a sensitive audience.
