To the end of the program, New Rituals of Healing, we are very happy about the chance to screen the documentary by @clemens.wilhelm and Jan Martinec, The Brexit Tree, a three-year long project around planting a Weeping Willow in the rural town of Huntly, Scotland on Brexit Day.

Synopsis:

On Brexit Day, a Weeping Willow is planted in the rural town of Huntly, Scotland. This Brexit Tree is a communal art project which causes a controversy in the media and in the town. Just like Brexit itself the planting is postponed three times, and the year-long process mirrors the divisions, troubles and hopes in the Pre-Brexit era. This paradoxical Weeping Willow symbolizes loss and sorrow, but also healing and rebirth. Will the Remainers and Brexiteers welcome this Brexit Tree on the banks of the River Deveron? This film follows the fault lines that run through Huntly which appears as a miniature UK. What does the future hold for Huntly? Will the Brexit Tree survive?

Director's statement Jan Martinec & Clemens Wilhelm

As EU citizens and frequent visitors to the UK, we felt the need to observe Brexit from the inside. We wanted to learn more about the internal workings of Brexit, about the deeper motivations and the underlying causes, and to capture this crucial historical moment for the future. We found in Huntly a rich field for sociological research and a welcoming community prepared to speak its mind. The year-long process of Brexit was mirrored in the making of this film: together with the Huntly residents, we faced long stretches of political uncertainties and delays, and the making involved a lot of back and forth on many levels.

Neue Rituale der Heilung Summer Videoart Screening 2021

I am thrilled to explore the South-American spirits on the 12th September!

Maracas treaty: Small items like stones, seeds, pieces of glass, rice, beans, and metals are hitting into the inside wall of a dried gourd. The sound that is produced goes far beyond the movement of the hand, it is the language of a dancing spirit.

The Treaty of Maracas video series by @marcomontielsoto deals with the founding and identity myth that designates and defines South America as a tropical, exuberant and dynamic territory, full of rhythms and cadences, as many as its older brother, Africa.

These videos inscribe utopian and mythical formulas, the ones that historically bequeathed to us through generations representing the Caribbean, presenting an irreverent version of the cultural meanings of the tropics that open up to complex semantic and visual games.

Many of the pre-colonized cultures have traces of evidence of the use of maracas in some of their artistic and ritual work. The natives of the African Congo and the North American Indians used maracas. Afro-Cuban warlocks, Babalawo and the West Indian Black used a instruments of African origin similar to maracas in many of their spiritualistic ceremonies and rituals.

Marco Montiel-Soto, traveller and immigrant, constantly finds himself returning forward. During his long term expeditions, the route becomes imaginary and travel time elastic. His work and installations are a creolization of architectural structures, collected found objects, sounds compositions, videos, photographs, drawings, collages, texts and maps. His work explores the intersections between political and poetic territories, homeland, traditions, economy, archaeology, religion, myths, death, cosmos and chaos.

It is a great pleasure to include this great work by @sarasejinchang_vanderheide ; Four Months, Four Million Light Years (2020) at our screening event, New Rituals of Healing.

Four Months, Four Million Light Years (2020) is a shamanic healing journey through space and time. This immersive film installation addresses the colonial narratives behind transnational and transracial adoption, specifically the historical relations between The Netherlands and Korea.

The colonial print Een Schaman ofte Duyvel-Priester [Shaman or Devil’s Priest from the Tungus, 1692] by Dutchman Nicolaes Witsen acts as a pivotal point for a spiritual journey through time. This print is the first Western depiction of a shaman. It marks the beginning of a long history of racialised and infantilising descriptions of Asian people by white Europeans and the violent eradiation of shamanistic cultures by missionaries.

The exhibition time-travels from contemporary Dutch society and the participation of 3,418 Dutch soldiers in the deadly Korean War (1950–1953) to early Dutch colonial descriptions of Asian people. In the Netherlands alone around 40,000 people have been adopted from the Global South, often through child trafficking and with falsified documents.

The four months of the title refer to a law that required a minimum stay of four months in a Korean orphanage in order to become adoptable by law for the lucrative transracial adoption industry. This industry started to flourish after the Korean War and continues to live off the same colonial imagery from 300 years ago.

Since the late 1990s, Korean-Dutch artist Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide ) has created a rich body of work that traverses an array of formats and mediums, including film, text, immersive film- and sound installations, performances, and painting. Chang questions Eurocentric systems of categorization, racialization and its pe*******on in all levels of life and contemporary Western society.

We are very proud to have this multiple awards winning animation by @alisitelengut in our screening event on 12th September!

The Fourfold (2020)
by Alisi Telengut

Description
Based on the ancient animistic beliefs and shamanic rituals in Mongolia and Siberia, the hand-crafted animation explores the indigenous worldview and wisdom. Against the backdrop of the modern existential crisis and the human-induced rapid environmental change, there is a necessity to reclaim the ideas of animism for planetary health and non-human materialities.

Artist statement
The ideas of animism as the pre-modern other is the most radical antithesis to the dualistic perspectives of modernity and anthropocentrism. The animistic idea is the worldview that "the world is full of persons, only some of whom are human, that life is always lived in relationship with others”, and that objects, nature, or the entire cosmos, are perceived of as being alive, are treated as a "thou" rather than as an “it” (Graham Harvey). Over the course of the last two decades, within the political movements of indigenous populations around the world, animism is being increasingly employed as a self-description. The term has taken on a new life further for land rights, the protection of natural resources and environmental ethics in our time of climate change and Anthropocene

Summer Videoart Screening 2021, On September 12, 2021, from 7.30 to 11pm

I am thrilled to show this special film by Markus Hanakam & Roswitha Schuller @rosieschuller at the garden #dasdritteland

The Heralds
Digital Film 4k, color, stereo, 7.11 min.
2017

The artefacts made by the two artists who live in Vienna are often shape-shifters, changing their exterior forms and reappearing in different contexts. As artists and researchers they are engaged in restructuring the visual art rulebook and building up idiosyncratic systemic orders and new visions of the world in their videos and objects. In the process they reflect and make ironic various historical and contemporary artistic strategies as well as their means of expression. They work primarily in the realm of video, interactive computer applications, drawing and applied forms of art.

The Heralds takes place in Kyrgyday village, a remote place in Yakutia (Sakha Republic), a few hundred miles northwest from its capital Yakutsk. It is the heart of the land of Khomus and home town to a multi-generation-family of Khomus artists, singers and poets with whom we travelled.

A life embedded in climatic conditions as harsh as those of Northern Siberia demands attentive contact with the surrounding nature. Offerings to pagan spirits and finding a common language with nature are part of everyday life. The featured Khomus artist Albina speaks through her instrument and body in the language of birds or horses, reflecting a local example of a more universal idea of an ideal or even spiritual language, just as European alchemists and mystics searched for hundreds of years ago. Alongside with this aural performance of languages, a local village horseman acts as a herald, carrying idiosyncratic flags to the various gates of the village. Language as a system of grammar and semantics now merges with various codes, sounds and articulations.

The artist Dew Kim (aka HornyHoneydew) @dew_needs_you creates fictional stories by collecting languages and images that proliferate on the Internet and flourish in q***r subcultures. Through assemblages of physical and nonphysical objects like moving image and sound, Kim imagines new worlds and environments. Recently, Dew Kim has produced sci-fi works that link posthuman concepts with q***r ontology, religion, and mysticism. He transforms his body into an object in order to visualize and describe what it means to be q***r.

explores the process of how homo sapiens evolve into posthumans through shamanism. The future of mankind depends on a shaman, known as HornyHoneydew, who has undergone extensive spiritual preparation for a ceremony that will transform humanity. On the appointed day when Venus shines brightest in the sky, the shaman performs a ceremony to transfer souls into the bodies of a new human race.

Through gender, sexuality, religion and science, Dew Kim speculates about what it is to be posthuman. By evoking the sound and look of a K-pop video, is a critical examination of dualistic heteronormative ideas that dominate Korean culture and society. Kim deploys shamanism in order to champion expanded notions of non-binary genders like that of the Two-spirit concept found in indigenous North American communities.

Helmet performance. 2019. Performance set at Das Dritte Land, Kulturforum Berlin. The artists garden is a performance space looking at borderlands. Situated close to the site of the Berlin Wall. A rock garden has been built with plants from North and South Korea by artists Seok Hyun Han and Seung Hwoe Kim. I performed a series works, many about growing up near the Northern Irish Border. I had a Korean woman smash my head in with a baking tray, I played the Map of Europe as a wind instrument, I sold some ‘Total Crap’ and recited a ‘Crisis Poem’. It was an amazing space and context to perform in.
